Right now for a GM, Jason Collins = Tim Tebow. Both are marginal players with limited hope of contributing to winning. Both bring a Media circus with them. Both may sell some tickets to special interests and draw boycots from others. Both have the potential to upset the lockerroom dynamics. The question will be does a NBA GM want to deal with that. Look up Jason Collins' stats from the Wizards this year. Least minutes and points per game with marginal rebounding.
Expect this to go a LONG time. Kuroda is worth 12 mil for a year easily. Even though he's a legit #3 for the Dodgers, they are STACKED with pitching even if it's a little wobbly. Kershaw is #1, Beckett is #2, Billingsley is #3. Then you have Capuano, Harang, and Lilly. Finally you have Ryu to negotiate with. Even with injuries, not sure I'd give up the 19th pick for a 1 year rental who is probably your #3 or #4 starter and forcing you to get rid of another average+ starter.
The Dodgers probably have interest and might even take his whole contract. Probably won't give you much back though for prospects. Is it worth it from a Cubs side? Soriano's worth less than the prospect Dodgers might send for Carlos Lee at full contract value.
Actually, Bo Ryan has no grounds to restrict any transfer from any team. He begged the Big Ten two years ago to allow a transfer who signed a letter of intent at Iowa to attend Wisconsin and not sit out any time. He also got the rule waived to allow him to be on scholarship, which is forbidden in Big Ten Interconference transfers. Bo Ryan is a hypocrite.
One interesting thing to remember, Darvish only has 1 year left on his Jap deal. That means he's going to want more money in his pocket on contract versus higher posting. Otherwise, he just turns around is a free agent next year. Might hold posting down to 30-40 but contract is going to be higher than 50 Dice got.
Reminds me of a super talented young player from LA who had a great first year and then really slumped. Undisciplined, a little banged up and turned into bad player. What ever happened to that reckless player...... I think his name was Kemp?
Oh yeah MVP with one of best season in baseball in last 60 years. (Closest to triple crown in NL in that time.)
If the owners are not paying the players, I'll be the players don't have a problem going over there. Of course the real issue is if someone goes over there and gets hurt and the contract status coming back.
