Being ranked 12th out of a class of 844 is a nice little booster shot to the illini program as well. If I recall correctly, Dee Brown had similar bragging rights. He didn't turn out to be a straight-A student, but academics were never a concern.

Weber is finally doing it right... After the Gordon trainwreck, he's starting to recruit as a 'backup plan' in case his high-profile recruit falls thru. With all that's happened this past year with Jereme Richmond, there's no guarantee that a scholarship won't be available for Smith. He lost out on a couple recruits because he counted on Gordon and now he's preparing earlier and better than in the past.
Posted Wednesday April 02, 2008, About: Can Crean keep Gordon at IU?
Gordon's gone, but I'd like to see him stay at least one more year - and I'm an Illini fan. I have never liked kids going straight to the pros from high school and I really like the idea of them staying in school at least a couple years to polish their games. Gordon has a few (minor) flaws in his game that another year in college (with Crean coaching him) will easily fix.

Like I've said in other blogs on this website, his first couple of years at Illinois he was still recruiting like he was at SIU. Now that he's figured out how fierce the competition is at the D-1 level, he's recruiting younger and for more impact talent. So far he's doing ok. Let's hope some of these guys last more than a year or two.

New arenas (or at least refurbished ones) are meant for fans and revenue, primarily. Redo the seating structure - fit more fans in the same building. Changes like that do wonders for the crowd noise issue as well. Visiting teams that finally become accustomed to an arena suddenly have to re-learn it, and then they usually only get one chance per year. If you've ever been to Assembly Hall in Champaign, you'll agree that something needs to be done.
Posted Friday March 07, 2008, About: Izzo comes to Weber's defense
Big question for everyone: The 2008 class has only one recruit, but since Stan Simpson's signing, Brian Carlwell has left the team and opened up a scholarship. Anyone know where that may be going?? This year is a wash, but maybe another recruit can be added to a good 2009 group.
Posted Friday March 07, 2008, About: Izzo comes to Weber's defense
This is too easy: Weber is having problems as a coach now because these recruits are the last of Bill Self's and mostly Weber's early recruits. In his first three years, he had the luxury of recruiting like he was still at Southern Illinois. Now that he's figured out that won't work, he's starting to recruit like a major D-1 coach and getting better overall recruits. This year's freshman class and the projected class of 2009 have WAY more talent than his first three classes put together. Give the program time and the wins will come back. Until then, the football team is an emerging bright spot.

Greenspan needs to be shown the door just as fast as Sampson.
Posted Wednesday February 27, 2008, About: Sampson texts Hoosiers players
I gotta let Sampson have this one... His players did like him and he's not trying to pry the kids away to another program. There's no real impropriety here and he's spent a lot of time with the kids over the past couple years. This is no issue unless he's telling them what to do thru the remainder of the investigation. Then, he's totally boned.

Sampson's disgrace isn't his calls and texting, it's the fact that he was specifically prohibited by the NCAA from doing it, did it anyway, then LIED to his own employer and the NCAA that he wasn't aware of three-way calls. He knew. The fact that he lied to Indiana is grounds alone for his dismissal, regardless of the NCAA investigation.

...and Weber isn't crying in the pic; he just got kicked in the groin by the ref.
Posted Wednesday February 27, 2008, About: Illinois center plans transfer
Couple quick questions for everyone: Now that Carlwell is gone, should Weber try to recruit someone from the 2008 class or defer the scholarship to another class? Should he try the JUCO circuit. I've never been a fan of JUCO transfers and his latest crop of 'regular' transfers hasn't panned out the way I'd like (tho the jury is still out on Alex Legion). Now that I think of it, will the scholarship automatically go to Legion (and is that why he transferred to Illinois - because he knew Carlwell was leaving)?
Posted Monday February 25, 2008, About: Illini recruit kicked off team
I'm sorry, Nineteen, but I'm not going to hold Weber accountable for the conduct of the fans at the last game, and I agree that it was in poor taste. Weber isn't a trash of a human being, he just isn't a premiere coach. And yes, neither team should be especially proud of itself. Now, for Richmond, I don't know what he was doing or what kind of coach Ashlaw is; it doesn't really matter. In all liklihood (SP?), They won't be on the same sideline next year and another coach will either see Richmond flourish, or will have an attitude on his hands. Ashlaw did what he felt was necessary and it will change the expectations for Richmond for the next several years.
Posted Monday February 25, 2008, About: Illini recruit kicked off team
The last that I heard, Coach Weber still has a job and isn't facing NCAA sanctions (again), so the classless comment can go away. Illinois' conduct during the Indiana game wasn't anything to be proud of, but I've seen worse from better teams. As for Richmond, at this point in the season, there's little to be gained from kicking him off the team other than saving face. I agree with the coach for doing it (knock the primadonna down a peg), but this only gives the kid a reason to go to another school and make you burn for it. (kinda reminds me of Gordon)
Posted Wednesday February 06, 2008, About: Big man commits to Illinois
Technically, this is Weber's 7th commitment in the last 5 months, if you include Alex Legion, who will make an immediate impact. I'm not saying Legion is that overwhelming, but the need is that great and Legion will fit in well. I think Weber is finally thinking like a Major D-1 coach in terms of recruiting and the team will see the dividends in a couple years. I'd like to see 2 more big name recruits for the class of 2010 before I start making plans for any Final Fours, tho.
