The Casual Observer's Comments

Posted Thursday April 17, 2014, About: LaMichael James is on the block
"...he has made it clear to the team he wants a bigger role as running back as well." I'm having trouble coming up with a team on which he'd have bigger role.
Posted Monday April 14, 2014, About: Spoiled and lazy Clowney will disappoint
I might be more inclined to question "NFC personnel man's" ability to evaluate players.
Posted Wednesday April 02, 2014, About: Kershaw's injury may linger long after return
Kershaw has a sort of herky-jerky motion that probably doesn't help things. Reminds me a bit of John Rocker's motion.
Posted Sunday March 30, 2014, About: Did Mike Trout pass up bigger East Coast bucks?
What he said.
Posted Sunday March 23, 2014, About: Nolan Ryan, Tommy John: MLB pitchers coddled
Unless I'm misreading it, Nolan Ryan and Tommy John aren't in agreement here. Ryan says throw, throw, throw; while John says kids coming up throw too much.
Posted Thursday March 20, 2014, About: Can Teixeira's wrist hold up?
He needs a strong year or the Yankees need to look elsewhere. Good guy, etc., but his stats have steadily declined the last few years.
Posted Monday March 03, 2014, About: Possible Jeter replacement already knows NYC
Yeah, these sort of stories will continue to appear through the next year.
Posted Saturday March 01, 2014, About: Harold Reynolds to join Joe Buck in World Series booth
My issues with McCarver are (were) twofold: 1. He was a master of the obvious. 2. It was almost comical the number of times he was wrong when he engaged in situational analysis. On the whole, I just didn't think he brought anything to the table.
Posted Wednesday February 19, 2014, About: Barry Zito is not retiring
I used to really enjoy watching him earlier in his career (with the A's) when he had the knee buckling 12-6 curve ball.
Posted Monday February 10, 2014, About: Baseball culture shock in Tanaka's future
The "pitcher's mounds there are so much softer than the ones in the majors" statement is interesting. I'm sure it's not the case, but I have this vision of them just dumping a pile of dirt on the field and not packing it down.
Posted Tuesday February 04, 2014, About: Crawford losing his leadoff spot to ...
I'm wondering if he's disciplined enough to be a lead off hitter; take pitches, work the count, bunt, etc.
Posted Friday January 31, 2014, About: Is Dunn part of Chicago's problem?
He's still got power and only 33. If he could just cut the Ks.
Posted Thursday January 30, 2014, About: Sherman daring Manning to throw his way
Posted Tuesday January 28, 2014, About: League open to ditching sleeves
I'm not so sure it's entirely a "fit" situation. Over the years some college players, and even whole teams have worn T-shirts under their jerseys. I'm dating myself, but in particular I remember Georgetown in the Patrick Ewing era doing it. Anyway, beyond that, the lightweight materials they use today (Under Armor type stuff) makes short sleeves much more feasible.
Posted Sunday January 26, 2014, About: Mets GM: We signed Japanese pitcher, too
Not exactly true. He did have a winning record while at Oakland (1983-97), including 4 division titles, 3 pennants and one WS. His record at SD (2005-09) was slightly below .500, but they did win 2 division titles. I would still maintain that's a pretty good record, especially when you consider these are both small market, low budget organizations.
Posted Sunday January 26, 2014, About: Mets GM: We signed Japanese pitcher, too
Alderson has a good proven track record as an executive, especially building farm systems in Oakland and San Diego. So he makes a joke about not overspending. I'm sure he's working to build the Mets and be financially responsible. I don't know about Wilpon, but I think Alderson is a good guy to have in the organization.
Posted Thursday January 23, 2014, About: 'Stros wooed Tanaka with Clemens (and $100M)
All sarcasm aside, it does make you wonder what their thinking was with bringing Clemens into the picture.
Posted Tuesday January 14, 2014, About: Braves can't keep Heyward from free agency
It's possible, but I'm very doubtful. He's a career .259 hitter at this point and without a lot power. He should have shown more by now. IMHO, I think what we've seen is what he will be and if I were the Braves, I wouldn't get stupid in trying to sign him.
Posted Friday January 03, 2014, About: Browns may interview Jim Tressel this weekend
Assuming he's interested, I personally think Tressel should be coaching again somewhere. At this point, the college level is probably best. In fact I am curious why he hasn't been given serious consideration for several college jobs. I wouldn't think he was that toxic.
Posted Friday January 03, 2014, About: Beginning of the end for Georgia Tech coach
Johnson of course did a terrific job at Navy where, since they really can't recruit blue chip athletes, the triple option is pretty much your only option...pun intended. Anyway, at GT, academic standards notwithstanding, they should be able to attract better athletes. I therefore thought Johnson would morph his approach into a more conventional offensive scheme. IMHO, if Johnson doesn't change, GT will never move beyond being just a respectable football team and play in lower tier bowl games.
Posted Thursday January 02, 2014, About: Wishful thinking for a big bat in Oakland
The fact that they play in that cavern of a ballpark (AKA: The Oakland Alameda County Coliseum) doesn't help the situation either.
