The horrors! How dare those blue-collar riff-raff from Raleigh interrupt the genteel Tar Heels while they are trying to listen to their symphony music!
Why do we like college football more than NFL? Regional rivalries! What are we doing in realignment? Destroying regional rivalries. Stupid, IMHO. I'm glad Va Tech will be in the same conference with Virginia, Wake Forest, Maryland, and Pittsburgh - at least we'll play the schools closest to us (except for WVU - I'm skeptical how well this is going to work out for them in the long run).
FSU's schedule is laid out like dominoes. Strength of schedule is good enough (Clemson, USF, Miami, Va Tech, and Florida) without having anyone they can't beat (Oklahoma last year). I would not be surprised if 2012 is finally their year...
This assumes nothing ever changes in college football... and betrays lack of knowledge of the history of the sport. 10 years ago it would have been 2 teams from the ACC and none from the SEC. 20 years ago it would have been 2 teams from the Big 12. Things change over time. The SEC will not remain on top.
Michigan opens with Alabama (in Dallas). Penn St goes to Virginia (ACC). Most of the rest of their non-conference games are restricted to the Pac-12 (and a few vs. Notre Dame).
I wish I knew! I don't think it's location - Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina are 3 of the best states to recruit.
Tech does produce NFL-calibre players - DBs & RBs in particular. QB & WR have often been weaknesses, and I can't remember any stud DLs (NFL-wise) since Bruce Smith. Maybe VT suffers from the same lack of OL and DL size/talent that has plagued the rest of the ACC lately.
As for not winning the big (BCS) games - 40% talent, 40% coaching, 20% just plain bad matchups (e.g. the year Auburn was undefeated but still got cheated out of playing for the national championship game - guess who they played in the Sugar Bowl?)
I don't expect VT to win the ACC, much less the national championship this year - for a couple of reasons.
1) I agree with previous posters that VT doesn't have the elite talent on the roster this year to win it all. Defense = very good; QB = good; OL = ?; WR = ?; Special Teams = ?
2) while the OOC schedule is very winnable, the ACC schedule is as tough as it gets (in the ACC at least): Ga Tech, @UNC, @Clemson, @Miami, Florida St, Virginia - all 6 of the toughest ACC teams not named Virginia Tech
Besides, 2012 season is just a warm-up for 'Bama rematch in 2013.
This is tiresome coming from FSU fans. If the ACC is so irrelevant, why can't you win it? Do you really think your team would be relevant in the Big 12? Win the ACC a few times, then let's talk.
I don't see how this affects the playoffs at all. Big 12 & SEC champs were going to get in every year anyway - they just that good.
Problem: how does the Pac 12 ever get to 16 teams w/o raiding the Big 12 (which ain't happening)? I foresee the need for some awkward-looking arrangement that still includes the ACC and Big East simply because there are too many good teams left out.

(what? It's actually been 31 years since their last football championship?)
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!
Wild-cards are NC State, Ga Tech, and Pitt
(not a very clever disguise!)
