Posted Friday August 14, 2009, About: Pryor's head-scratching 40m time
Why is it that no one sees what the problem is with this report?

Who gives a flip about how fast he runs the 40?

TP might be fast as greased lightning, but he's a *QB*, which means that running is- just a wild guess- about 1/5th of his game, and even then, most of the time he's just trying to elude the rush, not pick up yards! Unless OSU is putting in the spread, his ability to read the defense, identify the blitzes and coverages, make adjustments at the line, and find/hit the open receiver are going to be more important more often than how fast he runs.
Posted Friday July 31, 2009, About: Carroll denies violating NCAA rules
I doubt very seriously that the NCAA gave the okay for Carroll to employ NFL coaches as consultants in excess of the maximum number of coaches and assistants. It's clear what the core issue is here: was the guy just hanging around and pointed a couple of things out to his friend (which would be cool), or was he there specifically to provide input and advice, and help coach players (violation)?
It looks like Pete manage to exploit a gray area... and you know what? More power to him if he's successful. That's called testing the limits and it's part of what makes a winner.

I understand why the kid went to UF-- Have you looked at the UGA depth chart at TB? If you're coming in now, there are 5 guys in front of you, and they are ALL going to be there for at least 2 more years. This was a logical decision for both Brown and UF. Congrats to the Gators for picking up a quality recruit, and us Dawg fans wish Brown the best of luck... except in Jacksonville, of course. ;)

And asdfgaeb, you clearly have no idea about recruiting, do you? There are a lot of factors that kids consider when choosing a school, and frankly, championships probably are fourth or fifth on most lists. For example, if I were being recruited today:
1) playing time/depth chart
2) school's visability to the NFL
3) system
4) academics
5) tradition
6) recent history

It may vary from recruit to recruit, but virtually every single kid looks at winning SEC or National championships as being a single step on the path, not the ultimate destination.
Posted Tuesday July 14, 2009, About: Why Devils hired Lemaire
'Rapidly Degenerating' goalie... based on what? If 19-9 with a 2.4 GAA and FIVE shutouts and after being on the shelf for 3 months of the season and still ending up a runner up for Vezina trophy equates to 'rapidly deteriorating', then either a) all but two or three of the goalies in the NHL are rotting corpses, or b) you're a hater who is incapable of being rational.

Just a guess that it is (b). Good job. Way to represent.

Anyway, the primary reason the NHL eliminated the two-line pass was minimize how effective the Neutral Zone Trap could be by doubling the amount of ice that had to be covered. And if you actually look at the scores for the Wild's games last year, you see that only one out of every 4 were low-scoring affairs on average... which I imagine is probably very close to the league average.

Or you know, just talk trash and make yourself look like a fool to people who actually understand the game.
Posted Wednesday July 08, 2009, About: Meyer could leave Gators after season
Hm. You know, the only reason this thing has legs is a small fact that you guys seem to be missing: Meyer has set the expectations at UF to a level where they absolutely *cannot* be maintained. He has basically doomed himself. If he goes to ND, I would imagine that he could capitalize on his sucess and demand a particularly egregious salary, and enjoy what would probably be a reasonable amount of success (in large part due to a much easier schedule than your average SEC slate) for quite a few years. At Florida, however, I guarantee that the lunatic fringe of Gator fans would be breathing down his neck if he starts losing more than 2 games each year for more than two years in a row.

I'm not going to call him a liar, however, even if it doesn't take great business acumen to figure out he should capitalize on his recent success sooner rather than later. And honestly, it doesn't even matter very much: UF is a top job, and they probably could get whomever they wanted. Hell, I hear Jon Gruden and Mike Shanahan aren't coaching this year...

Posted Sunday July 05, 2009, About: Less alcohol at Florida-Georgia game?
Jeez, I wish they would actually address the issue that is relevent rather than just treating one of the many, many causes: the fans have gotten out of control. And I don't just mean at Jax, but at CFB venues across the nation.

If the University presidents [b]really/[b] want to do something about this, they'll create a code of conduct and shell out the money for a security force to actually enforce it.
Posted Friday July 03, 2009, About: UGA-Michigan in 2010 a pipe dream
As a CFB fan, this series NEEDS to happen-- and as a UGA alum, I can tell you, realistic Dawgs would never chalk it up as an 'easy win'. UM gets up for the SEC-- look at their bowl record across the past decade; and RichRod can fire up the troops when a) it's a big game, and b) they're HIS recruits.

Look, the bottom line is that CFB is all about the money now, but I gotta think that there is incentive for the networks to have these marquee OOC games to televise-- the hype around Bama-VT and UGA-OSU next season hopefully will wake the suits up that there is some serious, serious revenue to be made with advertising dollars for matchups such as these, and so maybe they'll offer the schools (all schools, not just UGA & UM) incentive to get it done, because if we're relying on stuff like 'strength of schedule' to try to convince these ADs to schedule bigtime, bowl-esque matchups *during* the season... well, we're f***ed. They're going to look at revenue first, foremost, and always, instead of what 'would look good to the BCS selection committees (but only if we win)'
Posted Friday June 12, 2009, About: Lemaire open to Devils job
I think the rules changes are going to make the neutral-zone trap a dicey proposition. Still, I'd rather see the Devils pick up Tippett and try something new instead of going back to the past. There was a reason Lemaire got fired the first time around with NJ: the underperformance in the playoffs.

Posted Sunday April 26, 2009, About: Why Texas Tech coach ripped Mangini
I still wish the U-dub brass had figured out how to bring Leach to Washington. He would've KILLED in the Pac-10, and would've at least made it entertaining enough for me to pay attention (SEC boy stuck in the Pacific NW now)

But this situation is really messed up. Think about it: Crabtree has gotten only postive pub up until pre-draft, and since the Seahawks were considering him, I've read a lot about how he travels with a 'posse' lately. Not that that is a cardinal sin.

The thing is, Leach hit a home run with the comment about Mangini's success. I don't give a **** about his 'pedigree', I'm convinced that I could do as good a job as he has to this point in the NFL. And I am so, so sorry that the Browns drafted Mo Mass from my school... He could be Hines Ward 2.0, but I don't see it at a screwed-up organization like the Browns.
Posted Sunday April 26, 2009, About: USF player arrested for pistol-whipping
Uhm... why does this feel like a rerun?

No, I'm serious guys: I feel like I read this story last year-- maybe not pistol-whipping, but USF player getting in trouble in South Florida, something about broken eyesockets, coach distancing himself from the kid...

I think I've seen this movie before. I think the AD down at USF needs to start pondering "what price fame"?
Posted Wednesday April 22, 2009, About: Cutler's Chicago night life in question?
If you are diabetic and you drink alot, you stress your liver out (the same liver that helps deal with toxins such lactic acid). You also cause your blood sugar to see-saw wildly, which usually results in adding a lot of fat, and can even have psychological ramifications.

Yes, this article doesn't say that he's out drinking, but wasn't the report from Denver that he partied hard? Just saying, you move to a new city, new fans, new teammates, you might want to work a little harder at first to create a good first impression, right?

Of course, the way the media and most of the Bears fans were slobbering over Cutler, I doubt that he felt that was necessary.
Posted Wednesday April 22, 2009, About: Bucs looking to trade TE?
Come on guys. GRUDEN was the dude who loved to stockpile QBs. No guarantee Brock will have the same attitude (and given how unsuccessful Gruden was with it, I bet he purposely goes in a different direction).
Posted Tuesday April 14, 2009, About: Brodeur wants bigger crease
Given that every rule-change in hockey has been to increase scoring, I'm sure goalies everywhere would like a bone thrown to them. This sounds like it might not be a bad one. I agree that Bettman would never allow the goalies to be hit tho, but I think it's probably because he doesn't want the inevitable retaliation against the other team/goalie that always seems to take place. After all, the only players on the ice who's job it is to be a sitting duck is the goalie.
Posted Tuesday April 14, 2009, About: Stafford telling buddies he'll be a Lion
Look. I watched every damn game the kid played in college. Every one. I'm not being biased when I say that, yeah, he could've used another year in school, but he'll be fine-- on one condition: the Lions play Culpepper at QB for a year and let the kid grow into the system.

Toss him into the fire immediately, and he'll probably struggle much the way he did when he was thrown into SEC-level competition as an 18 year old freshman (and btw, that year is where the majority of his bad stats come from). The good news? Unlike J.Harrington, even if he struggles, the kid will just motor through it. It won't break him. I think you Lion fans are going to be pleasantly surprised. Oh, and to the guy who said that he'd switch to pulling for the Vikings if the Lions picked Stafford, you realize that you now have no choice? Just admitting that you'd be such a **** fan gets you shown the door.

I think the one legitimate knock on Stafford is that he's not an 'in-your-face' kind of guy. Some people take that for him being passive, but he's not. He's intense, just not very demonstrative... and frankly, that will work a LOT better in the NFL than it will at the college level.
Posted Tuesday April 14, 2009, About: Notre Dame battling UGA for recruit
As much as it pains me to admit it, the Pickle Man #3 is probably the better QB at the moment. However, I think you gotta ask yourself what the situation is down the road, because if Clausen has even a semi-decent season, I bet he's out of there like he was fired out of a cannon. I'd have to say that UGA has the better long-term prospects for this kid. Stable coaching situation, perrenial 10 wins a season in the SEC = high profile bowls, AJ Green on the opposite side... But of course, he might get on the field a bit quicker at ND.

And that's if he even makes the cut academically at ND. As much as I hate ND (Hey, my father played ball for Purdue- I grew up loathing the Irish), they do have higher academic standards than a state school.
Posted Saturday March 28, 2009, About: Montana's son serious about Georgia
The book I've read on Montana is that his strongest asset is his football acumen. He certainly is a low-risk recruit tho, provided you're not betting the future of your program on him. I think he could very well be a David Greene type, and I'm sure that he understands the realities of big-time college football: after all, Joe went to ND back when it was still one of the absolute TOP schools in CFB.
So, give him a scholly, have him redshirt (he clearly needs to develop a bit more physically), and make sure you're not putting all your money on him being a superstar. I'd hate to see a repeat of the Applewhite/Sims debacle happen at UGA.
Posted Wednesday March 25, 2009, About: Kiffin: No more Gator apologies
Very possibly. I always enjoy a good debate (at least until it degenerates into the usual redneck/incest/uneducated/etc. insults).

However, the thing I was waiting for just arrived, so no more tilting windmills-- it's back to work for me.

Ya'll have a good day.
Posted Wednesday March 25, 2009, About: Kiffin: No more Gator apologies
While you can HOPE that is true, you cannot guarantee that it is true. The simple fact is this: Phil Fulmer's offenses weren't always terrible (although I will agree that they always seemed to do best when Cutcliffe was there). Ergo, you have to say that, unless Big Phil suddenly developed brain damage, the fault didn't *completely* lay on the shoulders of the coaching staff, as much as you want to pin your hopes on that. Look, if you want to believe that your team is poised on the edge of a 10 win season, then knock yourself out, but don't try to sell the rest of us on it, because unless they're wearing Orange and White, nobody is going to buy it-- the facts just don't back it up! (And don't expect to not be called out on it, either.)

A good example: while you might be enthused about having 5 running backs who were highly rated recruits, they haven't DONE anything yet, so you can't point at them and say "Hey look! See? There's proof we're going to be successful!" Sorry; I appreciate your optimism, but I'm not going to take your word for that, particularly when you have already explicitly demonstrated that you're not the most impartial judge of what is going on in Volunteer land.
Posted Wednesday March 25, 2009, About: Kiffin: No more Gator apologies
See, this is what I mean when I say 'delusional'. A team with a new coaching staff, new systems on both sides of the ball, with only one player on the team that has proven anything, is supposedly going to 'clobber' the defending national champions, who lost a sum total of TWO important players (only one skill position player)?

Had you said "I believe in my team, and you shouldn't count them out, even playing in the Swamp; crazy things happen in the SEC", well, that's called being a fan. But by saying that the Vols are going to 'clobber' UF? All I can do is roll my eyes, write you off as an irrational fanboy, and completely discount anything you say ever again.
