You would think the Charlie Manuel would have learned from Jerry Manuel's prior mistake of not letting Santana go the CG against the Phils on July 22.
Absolutely no way Cole Hamels should come out of last night's game.
Unfortunately for the Yanks, it was the bottom of the 9th and they were still losing 12-6.
So typical of their season.
I agree with phatty - bring up Brandon Wood.
See article originally posted on my cnnsi.com blog site under thejobarules but the article was originally posted on www.dugoutcentral.com the day after the trade.
While Nady's .309/385/630 numbers look good; since the trade, the Yankees are only 9-13 when Nady has appeared in a game, far worse than the Yankees 12 game over .500 record before the trade.
Meanwhile, all you see on Boston's highlight's are Jason Bay getting big hit after big hit, while scoring a bunch of runs. And the Red Sox are still winning.
Appears the Red Sox got the better trade day deal.
The former UCLA and Oregon State QB had a good training camp last year and started three games for the Panthers last season and was 2-1. His only loss came against the Cowboys.
Maybe the Yanks then can receive something back in the way of a supplemental draft pick for their $40 million.
Signing Sidney Ponson was a desperate move, but having Pavano pitch again was part of the plan all along.
Als,now that Ponson has pitched effectively, he alos will probably sign a free agent contract somewhere else and the Yankees will get another supplemental draft pick.
Believe Barry Bonds and Ted Williams were also walked with bases loaded.
With Nady and a healthy Matsui, the lineup can afford to let a few newer guys get the opportunity. Letting the younger guys play will save money in case Hank needs a few more million to get Sabathia.
It is no sure thing Sabathia will take Hank's money, though, because the Angels will probably be a player also for CC. The Angels lose Jon Garland to free agency and they are unsure of their own young pitchers in Nick Adenhart and Dustin Moseley.
The only problem Igawa is for the Yankees is that he takes up a rotation spot at Triple AAA, a spot which could go to another prospect. Of his $46 million deal, a total of $33.5 million has already been paid via the posting fee ($26 MM) and last season's salary ($5 MM) and half ($2.5 MM) for this year.
Trading one loser for another is not a smart move. The Yankees should instead bring up Dan McCutchen from Scranton - he is only 4-6 but has two CG shoutouts over his last several starts.
See my blog posted here a few weeks ago explaining the entire move.
Then why wasn't Bernazard out the door along with Randolph and Peterson?
If Bernzard was so adamant about the Santana trade, why didn't he speak up sooner?
Bernazard was feeding Jeff Wilpon information (some probably inaccurate) to make himself look better to the owners. Willie was stabbed in the back by Manuel and now Omar (who is no thejobarules favorite) will be equally Rasputined by Bernazard.
Withthe way he does things what man in their right mind would ever look to be hired by GM TOny Bernazard?
Couldn't have happened to a better team!
Compared to Jim Dolan of the Knicks and Jeff Wilpon of the Mets, its amazing on how Hank Steinbrenner is the "tame" son of a New York owner.
GatorBeanCounter - what free agents? Last free agents the TIgers signed were Pudge and Magglio. Seems like two good deals to me. All the overpaid buffoons were acquird via TRADES.
Someone should do an expose on Ms. Slezak to see if she has ever been to a Chippendale type of male dance review (or a female club for that matter) or has ever watched an X rated movie. If she has done either one, then she is a hypocrite.
Peterson was also the first pitching coach to consult with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, AL.
Is it Peterson's fault that Oliver Perez is a moron and that Heilman and Sosa leave too many balls up in the zone and give up more home runs than they should? Even with those two relievers fueling the fire sometimes, the Mets still have the 6th best ERA in the NL.
Is it Peterson's fault that the Mets offense has a dire inability to hit and score runs? The Mets are 13th in the NL in both team batting average and home runs and 11thin runs scored.
If the Mets scored a few more runs here and there, the overall record would be better and there would be no conversation about the pitching.
Peterson's extensive work before games and series puts his pitchers in good positions over their approach and the mental aspects towards their starts.
It is then up to the pitchers to follow through and pitch well.
Not exactly a blast.
But, although many people, including me, wrote him off he has responded in Oakland with a .400 OBP.
Also, after the free agent debacle that is Barry Zito - there won't be over the top money for even the best players. Where was the big money for Andrew Jones?
More teams are unwilling to pay big FA $$$ and are beginning to develop their own talent, then paying long term deals for the best of those players.
Perfect examples are the Diamondbacks, Rockies, Brewers and now Tampa Bay.
The Mets and Yankees need to follow suit.
Yes, I am a big supporter of both Hughes and Kennedy plus about 6 other young pitchers they have in Triple A and Double A. But, I am also aware that you can not judge young pitchers (or any player) on one month to start a season. The Yanks should leave both Hughes and Kennedy in the rotation for at least until the All Star break - then reevaluate. Even if the season goes down the drain.
Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson and even Brandon Webb all were belted around their first year in the majors.
You won't find out what H&K can do in the majors - unless they continue to pitch in the majors. Not in AAA. The Yankees made their bed with the young pitchers - now they have to sleep in it.
Honesty will not get him trashed by the media, and Arod should be commended for trying to play though pain.
That strained quad injury is extremely painful and slows a player down.
Its like trying to run through water with red hot pokers burning into your thighs.
Who are the Mets going to get next year to pitch for their team? Will any free agent sign next with the Mets knowing how their fans treat the players?
Wagner is absolutely correct for calling out Perez. Perez needed to throw the ball over the plate and he could not throw a strike even if the plate was 2 feet wide!
Wagner is the leader of the Mets locker room and needs to get his point across to Mets management and to Oliver Perez. If Perez does not improve his control then...
the Mets need to bring up Jonathon Niese, a 21 year old lefty from Double A. Niese impressed the Mets during spring training and is 2-2 with a 1.38 ERA at Binghampton.
C'mon, Omar let's see what he's got!
I love it when all the yahoos out there have that snappy steroids or HGH comeback whenever a player does not the same success as in the past.
Not every player was on the Kirk Radomski speed dial.
He had a nice career but its over. The Mets need to cut him like the Blue Jays cut Frank Thomas and bring up the 21 year old kid from AA Binghampton Mike Carp who is teaing up the Eastern League with a .442 average, 5 HR's, 19 RBI and OPS of 1.210.
Even if Carp only hits .230 with 5 HR's and 35 RBI's the rest of the year, its still better than Delgado. And the Mets can see if they have their first baseman of the future before they sign Mark Teixeira for next season.
But, Omar will probably trade Carp, Heilman and Jonathan Niese to Washington for Nick Johnson and a relief pitcher. Then Mets fans will watch Carp become the next Mike Jacobs and Heilman be a productive starting pitcher.
