Chuck Norris visited the Virgin Islands. Now they just call them...The Islands.

When North Dakota State beat Minnesota three(?) years ago, they saw a 23% increase in enrollment. That won't show in any athletic financial statement, but it impacts the school none the less.

Ohio State football pays for all other sports offered at the school. That's a lot of cheese when you consider how many sports OSU competes in. They also add about 1 mil per year to the general fund. 1 mil will not make or break OSU, but it is a nice thing to have. Football has also paid for the tennis courts, baseball facility and the ladies softball complex. That's just in the past 4 or 5 years, give or take. Now, you tell me if those things are built without the monies raised by the football program? I seriously doubt it. Eliminating the athletic department does not necessarily eliminate those students it touches. So some of the costs are still there even if you take away the athletics. In the case of OSU you are talking (and this number is about 3 years old and I'm going from memory, so could be off a bit) approximately 600 scholarships that would not be paid for by the athletic department. If they decided to continue to offer those it would have to come from the general fund or they don't take those students which is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

Correct. That was the year UT beat UGA and won the East, but UGA went on that streak to end the season (beat Hawaii in the Sugar) and was ranked preseason #1 the following year. UT went to the Outback, I believe.

Except that we already know that few teams actually make money off of the lesser or December bowls. They are more of a reward and a recruiting tool. I can't see a playoff driving enough money into the schools to change what is going on at Cal and other schools across the country. It could just be the way things go and tough cheddar for the schools that can't keep up. The world is not obligated to be fair.(hear that Boise fans?) I'm not sure the big schools that do make obscene amounts of cash are in any way obligated to help the smaller schools. But if they don't....who would the SEC teams play pre-conference if all the directional schools dropped sports?

Just kidding, people. Just kidding.

I'm new to this board and I'm sure you all have debated the playoff thing. One of my many concerns is that a school such as Texas that doesn't share equally with it's conference now, won't in a playoff scenario either. Not all conferences split their pies equally. This puts more pressure on the less financially secure schools to either drop some of their sports or bleed themselves in other areas to keep up. If it were Ford vs. Chevy I'd say go for it, but we're talking schools here.

Not sure traveling for 2 or 3 rounds of a playoff saves a school any money compared to a bowl game, but that's another debate.

Cutting sports at any level should be an absolute last choice. I do understand the costs involved, though. Few schools out there can afford all the non-revenue sports they offer. Title IX didn't help this, but again, another debate. I'm not sure how this gets fixed. On the one side the educator is saying sports is secondary to the schools mission and on the other the AD is saying you'd go bankrupt without us and in the middle is a kid just trying to get better at what he/she does. Maybe the Ohio States, Texas' and Alabamas of the world share the wealth a little more? Not that they should. Personally, I think we see a contraction of the number of schools at the highest level and the creation of a another division. At least for football, that follows the NFL model. I don't want to see it because then it's just another version of the NFL and one of those is enough.

One last thing. There is no such thing as a meaningless bowl game ;)

He has done well enough that I rarely use "pretty good, for Northwestern" when talking about the teams accomplishments. I believe he stays at NU for as long as he coaches, but I wonder if he ever gets the itch to move on to a title contender. He turns 36 in December. Still a baby as far as coaches go.

I had a fella call me out on my blog site about the Wisky/Sparty game. He says MSU takes it. Anybody else think Sparty wins this one?

My apologies to the Bama and Florida fans. We should never have gone off on this AQ vs. Non-AQ tangent.

Better attendance, not better ratings than the UF v Cincy game.
And I thought that seemed odd, Georgia listed rather than Georgia Tech., but I'm always willing to believe my feeble memory is lacking.

Of the 5 BCS bowls it was 4th ahead of only Iowa vs. UGA. If you look at the list of the top 31 (that's all they show on the site) BCS games ratings, you will not find any game involving a non-AQ team. Again, not saying it is right. I think the ranking is a matter of convenience for those that do the rankings. They know putting them up there takes some of the pressure off early. They also know that the computers will kill them later in the season. Then again, maybe not. As for it being crap, let me say just one thing. Boise State and the like are trying to get a piece of a pie that took literally took 100 plus years to create. And they want it after a mere decade or so of being involved. Sorry, but it should take more than 2 big bowl wins and a fancy carpet in your 33,000 seat stadium to get a slice of that pie.

Maybe in Texas and Idaho. I still think it is wishful thinking for TCU or BSU to believe they will get in over a 1 loss SEC team. It would have to be done by the human element of the polls, in my opinion, because no way the computer would have either ranked above a one loss SEC champ. And lets not forget, the majority of people would rather see the big boys. I know there is a lot of talk on the message boards about giving TCU or BSU a shot, but the TV ratings are what matter and it has been shown time and time again, BSU or TCU do not draw. Not saying it is right.

Yeah, interesting that he hangs 73 on a nobody and takes a knee to keep the margin at 12 against Miami. I wonder if the Michigan ties had anything to do with it?

If Meatchicken angers anybody, I might consider not using it, but I only do so with the utmost respect. The Big House is still my favorite place to have seen a game.

Ben Chappell (qb Indiana) is pretty solid and if you have seen any of Meatchicken this season you know how atrocious their secondary is. Not really their fault. They are playing a bunch of guys with little to no experience. On the flip side, we all know how dangerous Mr. Robinson can be and Indy has not shown any signs of stopping the run in their first 3 games. I think the game will be a blast to watch. Now that I've said that, it will probably be pouring down rain and the score end up 6-2 or something.

I'll take Vandy getting 10.5 at UCON as my upset special. I also like NC State over the Hokies. Not sure why Va Tech would be favored on the road in this one (-3), but I'd take the Pack straight up here.
