"Take back"? you mean force the teams that CHOSE to leave Canada move back? Very realistic. Yeah, also cap salaries- that would definitely lure back all the Canadian players, now in the US, to play in a Canadian Hockey League for a half, third or quarter of what they make in the US.

You wouldn't have balking Euros, you'd have balking everyone- except for marginal players. You'd create a northern tier AHL. Or maybe more like arena football. Where the guys who couldn't get into the big league end up.
Posted Thursday October 22, 2009, About: Avs down on Wolski?
My grandparents were from Poland. In Polish, "polak" refers to someone or something from Poland ("pani polak" = "Polish friend or guy") but in the US "Pola*c*k" (the way I usually see it spelled) is derogatory. It probably derived from the authentic Polish word. Newly arrived Poles didn't grow up hearing it used in an insulting fashion.

No offense may have been meant, so peace. I'm not a PC head case, but when people tell a Pola*c*k joke, (not a "polish person joke") it doesn't usually play up the intelligence or cultured sophistication of the heritage.

Also, apparently some posters don't realize that this is a derogatory term. A person of Polish descent is a "Pole". The disallowed word is the ethnic equivalent of the N-bomb. Or pick any other slur of choice. It's offensive.

It was 2 piece when you were born, but that was changed pretty quickly.

If I remember correctly, he got hit in the foot by a shot the his first payoff game back (true, not in an early series- benched? injured?) and was out the rest of the playoffs with a broken foot.

Streaky maybe but I believe still 4th in points for Pens last season. Not bad for the Cup champions.

Whoops. CA as in Canadian, NOT California.
Posted Monday August 24, 2009, About: DirecTV dropping Versus network
Agreed. Have to suck it up and get NHL Center Ice. It's not cheap ($160 last year) but it is fun getting local broadcasts, including occasionally en francais for Montreal. I wish the US camera teams would learn how to film hockey, the games always look better in CA broadcasts.
Posted Friday July 31, 2009, About: NHL investigating Hossa-Blackhawks deal
Unfortunately Point has gone downhill. Look for Huber Bock if you can, made in Monroe WI, oldest brewery in the midwest (1848)- but now owned by a Canadian of East Indian origin! Huber Bock is better than the Berghoff labels, also made by the same brewery, and a couple bucks cheaper for a 12 pack. Still less than $10 for a 12 here in Madison.

The "new=old" Schlitz is a pretty good harkening of what Point used to taste like.

But Sprecher beers from Milwaukee are the best in the state now, with Capital from Madison honorable mention.
Posted Friday July 03, 2009, About: Senators may keep Heatley's money
Exactly. Middle aged folks would love a choice lakeside or mountain cabin to relax in. A multimillionaire in his 20s like Heatley ALREADY HAS THAT for the summer. Bright lights, big city, pretty girls- that's what most of us would have wanted as a twentysomething guy. I've never been to Edmonton, been to Calgary, which is OK- but compared to being a millionaire in NYC or Vancouver? or LA?
Posted Wednesday July 01, 2009, About: Heatley vetoes Oilers trade
Sportsnet.ca reports the deal is on hold, not canceled. Interesting, a lot less Heatley-hate from the comments there. Mostly Oil fans thankful to be seeing Penner go.
Posted Monday June 29, 2009, About: Wings, Hossa far apart in talks
That's the first thing I thought when I heard that.
Posted Tuesday June 23, 2009, About: Who will Penguins re-sign?
Yeah, no kidding, in the final especially Gill was a revolving door spinning to keep up with the Wings forwards. Did OK against lesser teams but struggled. By next Final he'll look like the last days of Hatcher.
Posted Monday June 22, 2009, About: Red Wings, Chelios to discuss future
Actually he would only had to have waited 30 seconds- like the Pens waited last year, while the Wings did their celebrating- then when the wings were ready the Pens lined up.

Accent is relative. Toronto clearly has an accent if you are from, say, Wisconsin. So does BC. So does Wisconsin. When I moved to Philly people asked me if I was from Canada. I thought that was cool.

BC has the Scottish blend- the only North Americans who say "wee" and they're not in the bathroom.

Kudos though to T&R for the very hip Bob Dorough/Miles Davis reference in the story header.
Posted Monday June 08, 2009, About: NHLPA exec: Pull the plug on Phoenix
NO, it's because the sport doesn't make anywhere near as much money as football, basketball or baseball, thus they are less "valuable", so their power is less. The vast majority of players are still Canadian or US- canadian vs english?? Not the same language, eh? You may get an argument aboot that.

Spelling intentional, read it aloud.
Posted Wednesday May 06, 2009, About: NHL fighting Coyotes move to Canada
State of the art in 1986 is almost a quarter-century old.

I am from the US, but I love Canada and I like Canadians, travel there often, and would be pleased to see teams move back to Canada. But stop blaming Bettman because you lost your teams in the 90s. Money talks. Get your act together and make it financially impossible for the league to block a move back to a Canadian market. All the Canadian boys making millions in Anaheim or Florida would probably be pleased to be back in Canada, I'm sure. Wouldn't they?
Posted Saturday April 25, 2009, About: Why NHL may suspend Tortorella
You mean beer spray- not wait, he got that for free.

What would he do in philly, throw batteries at the fans?
Posted Monday April 13, 2009, About: Will Lemaire's exit sway Gaborik?
Hey, I like the third jersey (the red one)- kind of fishing cabin colors.
Posted Sunday March 29, 2009, About: Lilja's headaches worry Wings
I don't understand- a player is injured, his team will suffer, perhaps his career and the long-term health of his brain may be uncertain-- and fans are worried that this will make fighting look bad?
Posted Tuesday March 10, 2009, About: GMs to consider new tiebreaker rules
Wow this has gotten way off track. I thought Holland floated the idea, not Bettman.

What I can't understand is people wanting to give points for NOT WINNING (also called a tie) just because that's the way it used to be. Everyone seems to have forgotten how unbelievably boring the last ten minutes of dump and chase was when teams gave up trying to win and settled for obstruction, holding, interference and the tie point.
