I think two things are wrong here. One, Beane's made some questionable deals recently and he barely got off clean last season (Loaiza's long term deal, trading Ethier, signing Chavez and letting Tejada go). Secondly, and more importantly, I feel Beane's control over his managers is the one downfall to his style.

Beane picks good players, but he needs to pick more commanding managers, guys who are veterans in the league and know how to deal with injuries and malcontents. They say Geren is laid back, but that's not what a team like the A's need right now.

He should have picked Ron Washington to be manager. They don't share the same baseball philosophies, but one thing is clear: This organization is a few steps from being rebuilt from the bottom up in preparation for the new stadium in 2011. The last thing they need is an aloof manager.

On second thought, lemme revise my comment. The red sox are getting into the fray as a strategy to raise the price on the bidder. Obviously, if he ends up going to an AL club, more money to A-rod means less money they'll have to get other talent, essentially destroying their playoff chances for the next four or five years. I bet the Red Sox have no real intention of signing A-rod. Smart move.

Hopefully A-rod learned from his last contract that there is a trade off when you take a huge paycheck. I bet he opts out and signs elsewhere for about the same that he gets now, if not less. Or maybe he'll do what the D-backs used to do and accept deferred payment for some of his contract so as to not destroy his team's chances of competing.

A-rod needs to go. He's treated like garbage in NY and he deserves much better. Let him go to Seattle, LA, or San Fran, where the fans cheer him and don't give a flying **** about tabloids.

It's not about money. He'll probably get more money and that's how it'll probably be spun by the media. But it's about appreciation and feeling of place. He's leaving to be treated like the star he is, not like a second-rate piece of garbage who still has to make a name for himself. In five or ten years i hope Yankee fans look back on their behavior during the A-rod era and slap themselves.

i watched Tejada while he was on oakland. he plays with his heart on his sleeve and would be an excellent addition to any playoff-bound team. he is still a great player and one of the best SS in the AL. If he'd be willing to shift to 3b, the Dodgers would take him in a second.
