As a fielder, Young is one of the 5 worst SS in baseball (Jeter is about average). He'd be much more valuable at another position. Moving to 3rd to make room for a better fielder is the right thing to do.

Despite his injury Ortiz has three stolen bases this year, a career high (he's never before stolen more than one). He stole second on June 25, against the Seattle Mariners. And then he stole second again on August 5.... also against the Mariners (different pitcher and catcher each time). Then he stole a base on September 2 against the Orioles. He only came around to score in the second game, which ultimately Boston won 9-2, so his base-stealing prowess didn't have any material impact for Boston. But still, rather embarrassing for the pitchers and catchers involved.
