Wait a minute -- college kids went to a party? No! The horror.

How is this a story?

UNC, one of the most successful basketball programs in the history of the game, would retire Durant's jersey by their rule of any player that wins a national player of the year award gets their number in the rafters. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet for any basketball program to accept a tradition like UNC's.

I'm a Red Sox fan and I'll be sad to see that stadium go. Like the team or not, there's some phenomenal history of the game that has gone on there.

i dont know if he waived a clause, but the brewers are definitely a better spot than the indians right now. he's still liable to go to free agency if he doesn't like it in milwaukee though, which is why they got him for such a good price.
Posted Monday July 07, 2008, About: Report: Weis projects 9-12 wins
ND's schedule padding is such a big deal because they haven't nutted up and joined a major conference. So while Ohio State, Michigan, etc. can give themselves four "easy" wins a year, ND can give themselves 9-12 if they feel like it.

I'd be happy to get Teixeira as a Sox fan, but what are we supposed to do with him? Youks is an all-star at first. Move him to third, I suppose? I'd rather see the Sox chase a guy like Rich Harden.

drj, he got traded, he didn't get a new contract...so how was it for the money again? If I'm the Cubbies I'd offer up a firesale for Timmy Lincecum. Piniella wants a lefty, he'd be the one to go after. The Giants would have to look at a package of prospects considering the ridiculous amount of holes in their lineup.

Hank, just out of curiosity, which of Pittsburgh's centers do you think would fit Satan better?

Yeah, Hank's gonna trade Joba or Jeter. Shut up, Hank.

That's just funny.

Jagr's definitely not coming back (to New York or Pittsburgh). I wonder where he'll end up though, there are plenty of teams that could use a guy like him.

To paraphrase Mark Twain. the demise of The Penguins has been greatly exaggerated.

I'm impressed--paraphrasing Mark Twain. That's the perfect way to put it, though, if you ask me.

I'd like to see the Pens get another solid winger, but that wouldn't leave much room for a Staal extension. Anybody else think it would be a good idea to deal a guy like Sydor or Gill to either pick up a winger or free up some cap space? We've got plenty of solid defenseman and Goligoski stuck in Scranton. Pens need offense more than anything now.

Some of those guys can barely grow facial hair (remember Crosby's petterass stash? LOL)

Crosby's playoff beard was embarassing--absolutely hilarious, though.

ESPN's headline: "Penguins agree to deal with Satan"

It's an old joke, but there's gotta be a better way to put that.

That's a good point. He hasn't proven himself over a full season, so I'll give the nod to Lundqvist. But the Pens have such a young team you can expect to see improvement on most fronts.
P.S. It's nice to civilly debate hockey.

I said that wrong, they were big parts, but I stand by that they are replaceable, and there's still time to pick up comparable guys to Roberts and Ruutu. So far Shero (with the exception of the Dupuis signing) has simply moved down the list of his priorities. Hossa was number one, he waited until he was gone to move to number two, signed Malkin to an extension, moved to number three, re-signed Orpik, moved to priority four, re-signed Fleury.
Shero had a plan and stuck to it. He won't overpay (see: Sundin, Mats and his $10m/yr offer) to get a guy that would be useful. He'll get someone like Markus Naslund to fill the gap left by Malone and bank, perfectly reasonably, on seeing improvement from the younger players.

I'd disagree with you on the better defense. The Penguins are loaded with good defensemen. Also, Fleury demonstrated that he can be one of, if not the, best goalie in the league. I don't meant to say that he is, but if he consistently performs at a high level (remember game 5?) he is certainly among elite company.

Please can any of the Pens fans tell me why they think this has been a good offseason for the Pens. It is great they have signed Malkin and Orpik but how are they better than last year? Malone, Roberts, Ruutu, Conklin and Hossa were huge parts of that team last year and have yet to be replaced. Who is left on the FA market that is as good as Hossa?
Bottom line unless the Pens start adding quality players they will not be better than last year. Gentle reminder they fell short last year.

That's the thing though, they weren't all huge parts. Hossa didn't contribute much until the playoffs, coming at the deadline and being hurt for a while. Ruutu was a good winger, but certainly not one that can't be replaced, Roberts was way overpriced for his age, and he too is a replaceable player. Conklin wouldn't have even been thought twice about had it not been for Fleury's injury, and you don't want to sign a back up goalie on the off-chance that your starter goes out for half the year (though I am surprised he signed for only 750,000).
Granted I'm inherently biased towards the Penguins, but these young players will only get better. Fleury, Malkin, Sidney, Staal...all 23 or younger. I've never heard of anyone topping out at that age. I don't necessarily think the Pens have done a great job, but it's certainly not bad. Assuming they can sign Jagr or Naslund or someone along those lines, they'll still be very good.
