how is separating these teams going to increase competition? if you move the yanks or sox to any other division. they are still going to dominate. the al central, nl central, and nl west are wide open every year. they had this same idea in football when the nfc east won 4 super bowls in a row.

the only reason to expand to 96 teams would be to ensure big name schools who had an off year a spot in the tourney. for example, uconn and unc are nit bound. a field of 96 means they get in based on name recognition alone.
