This piece from the NYT does NOT say why! It asks the question, but never really explain it. I think K-State has had great success with JUCO's. Why don't they just come out and say this is an vastly un-tapped resource.

This is yet more pressure on Aggie Athletic Director "Dollar" Bill Byrne to fire Fran at season's end or perhaps before.

"Dollar" Bill is known to be myopic when it comes to money. Fran has backed into qualification for a bowl game by beating Conference USA and Mountain West caliber teams.

A bowl game means bucks for "Dollar" Bill. That may all that he needs to say :"AW Shucks, Fran! Bygones are bygones. Yew can coach fer another year!"

I hope that's not true.
