I think Andruzzi just got diagnosed with lymphoma. I blame Kendall. Faneca would be a frickin treat, though.
Posted Saturday June 09, 2007, About: Vick cancels youth football camp
You crossed the line, thunderdragon. I understand your anger. Vick is really messing up with a lot of kids thinking it's all good, but pathetic threats are only reactions, they do not create any useful future. As smartestsportsfan fails to comprehend, Vick's alleged behavior is not questionable or punishable because of race, but because it is criminal. Bonds and A-Rod are not being questioned for being non-white, but for being PRICKS. Punishment of someone for being of another race from you is a far cry from punishment EARNED with BAD CHOICES.
Posted Friday June 08, 2007, About: Teams lining up for Cowher?
Supersport said it exactly right, but I might just rather have Fox than Cowher. Something tells me that in the last few years Cowher became more and more of a facilitator of an excellent coaching staff than the master of plans himself, and Pittsburgh the town treated him very well. No way he gets forgiven for his lesser seasons like that under the intense NY media scrutiny. Fox has that Giants experience under his belt, though he'd really only be free with more underperformance in Carolina, so it's an idea with no wheels.

Pete Kendall is a one-man press conference - definitely not the prima donna crap you want at guard. If the Broncos had an o-lineman like this the hogs there would hit him with their informal fines so much he'd have to hold out for money just to buy gas. I completely support the public attention to the critical offensive line positions that has been so slow in coming over the decades, including the big money. However, it's not like the lay of the land has changed that much since he signed this deal. If he was in the fifth of seven years or something that would be one thing, but he entered this contract around the same time as that silly Hutchinson deal went down, like a year and half ago. I believe this is just Press-conference Pete, a me-first guy, trying to force his way out of the Jets' new team-first culture. Remember, he was sent packing from Arizona by Dennis Green for this type of crap years ago before getting scooped up by Herm "Whatever You Say, Guys" Edwards.
Posted Sunday June 03, 2007, About: Jets may keep McCareins after all
This seems to me like a carryover to the Jets from Mangini's experience with the Patriots, where certain vets eat some humble pie and learn to shut up, put up, and stop being undeserving prima donas. McCareins isn't good enough to be a number two starter, over even number three deep threat, but the story of him checking his ego and learning to contribute on special teams makes me say more power to him if he works to earn his roster spot. He can have Pete Kendall's money as far as I'm concerned.

Pete Kendall has been a loud-mouth since he arrived in New York. How would he fit in with the Broncos' excellent offensive line, where a quote in the paper gets you an informal fine from your peers? Cut him loose. Nick and Brick are ready to grow into leaders, instead of playing another season next to the incredible pass-blocking press-conference.

I can't believe the Cards fan posted that it's a voluntary workout and one doesn't HAVE to go. Is that poetic, or what? How many Cardinals come to their voluntary workouts after winning a playoff game? NONE. They've never gotten there because it's a franchise without a soul.

new... someone NEW is at the helm

Much as I despise you for being a Philly guy, Jazz, everything you wrote is true. I do think this IS a noteworthy story because it indicates just how mentally overwrought and emotionally disconnected this franchise has become. I was shocked they retained Coughlin this January, and wouldn't be surprised if someone is at the helm by the end of the season. Coughlin may be stressed enough to crack and bite the hand that feeds him.

Posted Monday May 28, 2007, About: Falcons owner mum on Vick's troubles
If Vick owned the property and the licensed breeding business I believe he is legally on the hook if illegal activities took place within the confines of either, even without his knowledge. Can anyone confirm that? I certainly believe he is MORALLY responsible for both. You can't just say "Well, he didn't know. Why are the white suburban guys dropping the hammer on him without having been proven guilty?" You know the macho saying "not in my house!?" It has real meaning. Kircus and Shockey and Vick and, dare I say, Tillman, are all guys who did not grow up with a steady father to teach them to keep their noses clean and live with less drama and more contribution to society. All four of these are the type of guys who flame out because they do not know how to live moderately and they destroy themselves. At least in the case of Tillman he flamed out trying to do good, but I see it as more of the same. Vick wants to take care of his people, but doesn't know how and it all falls apart like just another Falcons season.

I understand your feeling, Beer-n-drums, but this news item is a symptom of something much more massive than racial profiling or insensitive language. Vick is a very important public figure who is living unconsciously because no one taught him how, implicitly teaching the next generation how to live large and stupid like him. Jackson and Sharpton do need to jump all over this; on Vick's punk-*** case, not the prosecutors doing their jobs. Generation after generation of young men without active fathers are being left to figure out how to be men on their own, and they do not have the content of character and self-knowledge to do it. This is a case, like most of these NFL police blotter items, of nobody raising these guys so they can manage their fortunes and not destroy themselves. If you set aside the obvious differences of race and pocket-qb versus scrambler-qb styles, the most glaring difference between Peyton Manning and Michael Vick, ON and OFF the field, is that one had a rock-solid father mentoring him.
Posted Friday May 25, 2007, About: Knicks to pursue Carter trade
Drastic times call for drastic measures. The Knicks came dangerously close to making the playoffs late in the season, and Isaiah knows something has to be done. Think about how many weeks off they would have missed if they were still playing now! Isaiah had a wardrobe full of colorful, fresh-pressed golf-shirts just waiting for spring, and the players had a lot of video games to catch up on after a long regular season.
Posted Saturday May 19, 2007, About: Lawsuit signals Martin's retirement
Why has this process been so drawn out, for either side? Have they just not been paying him, so both sides are happy to keep the door open? It seems a little weird in the slice&dice salary practices we've come to expect in the NFL. The timing of the purchase of that insurance policy and the PUBLIC release of his injury status was a little tight, you have to admit. Could it be that the Jets and Martin have been colluding implicitly with each other all this time so that the third party would have to pick up his salary? This is a "good guy" and a "good guy" franchise, so it's hard to imagine, but something funny's in the mix here we don't about.
Posted Sunday May 13, 2007, About: Jets' coach hires Teddy Atlas
I think the hyperbolic "genius" thing only hurts the career of a good coach who clearly is on a positive trajectory but needs no silly flattery. His tactics are smart, grounded, and, most importantly, he holds to them, with Tannenbaum providing what seems a very strong check and balance system. The wrestling overachievers he invited to try out are a good example of that. As much as these guys are tremendous atheletes, Tangini know that to ascend the mountain of NCAA wrestliing these guys have extraordinary self-discipline. That's all Bryan Thomas and Victor Hobson needed to start contributing, eh?
