Posted Wednesday November 25, 2009, About: Bills to meet with Shanahan
It is, but that's not true at all. I've said this over and over. The Broncos offense under Shanahan was consistently one of the best in the NFL, with or without Elway and TD. The 3 QB's that followed John Elway all made Pro Bowls within their first 3 seasons under Mike Shanahan's tutelage, Brian Griese in 2001, Jake Plummer in 2005, and Jay Cutler in 2007.

Shanahan's problems were on defense. When he had a good defense, he had the best team in the NFL. That was 2005, when the Broncos were 13-3 and the clear Super Bowl favorites before the defense folded and Jake Plummer had terrible game in the AFC title game.

One question: would you trade anything for Varitek at this point? He's totally useless in the National League. He can't hit, and you can't afford to have a position player in the NL that can't hit. He's already exercised his option, so someone would have to trade for him. No thanks.

No, the purpose of signing Schneider is to further the Chris Iannetta experiment. He was awful last year, but they still want him to start.

That being said, it won't be long before it is scrapped. Michael McKenry is the catcher waiting in the wings, and he should be up sometime next season or the following.

Saying that, now, doesn't give me any faith. We've heard the same thing about a lot of catchers with the Rockies. JD Closser was the worst, and Iannetta is looking more and more like a failure. Ben Petrick was really good, then he got Parkinson's. That was sad.

Moral of the story - the Rockies can't catch a break with catchers. No pun intended.

I dunno. I've been thinking about this ever since it's been apparent that Buffalo would be looking for a new coach. It wouldn't surprise me if Shanahan did, in fact, go to Buffalo. Ralph Wilson seems like the kind of guy Shanahan would want to work for.

However, Jerry Jones and Mike Shanahan have a well-documented friendship. I would be surprised if he's not in Dallas.

Tennessee or Jacksonville could be destinations for Shanny after the season as well that wouldn't surprise.

It happens.

That is simply not true. Shanahan's offenses consistently ranked in the upper echelons of the NFL after the Elway/Davis era, and Brian Griese, Jake Plummer, and Jay Cutler all made Pro Bowls under Shanny's watch. Also, I believe there were 8 running backs that had 1,000 yard seasons under his tutelage.

What doomed Shanahan in the last few years was a complete lack of defensive attention. Champ Bailey was about all he had on that side of the ball.

Good effort, but it would be Toronto, not Montreal.

I hate this guy.

Granted, this was after 7 years of Clint Hurdle.

Shanahan tried his darndest to get TO to Denver back when TO ended up signing with the Cowboys. He's signed plenty of malcontents in his day. Travis Henry, Dale Carter, Darryl Gardener...

Thanks, Foos.

As if he would go to the Canucks in the first place.

If you're gonna waffle on it, just give it to Luke Schenn after the season. A lack of good, solid, veteran leadership means that the "C" should go to a kid, in my opinion.

While O'Reilly has been a tremendous surprise, to say that Duchene has been a disappointment is foolish. He doesn't have the stats yet, but the chances that he creates every night are unbelievable. He's 18 years old. Give him time. He's gonna be a superstar.

Nobody needs to break that to me. I follow the Foppa sweepstakes religiously. I know what's going on.

All the same, 10% of Peter Forsberg is 100X better than 100% of Darcy Tucker.

Yes. The Buffalo Bills.
Posted Thursday November 12, 2009, About: Forsberg not ready for NHL return
I drool when I think of Peter Forsberg playing on Matt Duchene's left wing. I drool when I think of anybody other than Darcy Tucker playing on Matt Duchene's left wing.

Posted Thursday November 05, 2009, About: Sources: Rangers to hire Hurdle
That's easy to say, but Bob Apodaca's been remarkably successful as the Rockies pitching coach. He's had some serious retread success stories: Darren Oliver, Jeff Fassero, Shawn Estes, Jason Marquis, Josh Fogg...

Don't get me wrong, I think Clint Hurdle's a great guy and a great baseball guy, but he needs to be a hitting coach to be successful. Managing's not his forte.
Posted Wednesday November 04, 2009, About: Sources: Rangers to hire Hurdle
Clint's a solid hitting coach. The players all loved him so much after Don Baylor hired him for the Rockies back in 1998 that Jim Leyland and Buddy Bell both kept him on staff. Then, of course, Bell got fired, and Hurdle took over.

If this is a manager-in-waiting thing, though, the Rangers are crazy. Hurdle is not a good manager. He has a habit of trying to be the players' friend, then pissing them off, then benching star players for swinging at the first pitch, but not anyone else. Also, his bullpen management has always been atrocious.

I had to laugh during the baseball game last night when they showed the graphic of Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia in Indians uniforms, and the headline read, "You still have LeBron." I thought it was funny.
