Bluegrass is alive and well, and there are some really great bands if you're interested in the genre. Rhonda Vincent is the standard bearer today. She's so, so good. And her brother makes up one half of the duo Dailey and Vincent. Also great. I'm also a big fan of Special Consensus, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the Grascals, and the Steep Canyon Rangers.
I'm late to this one, but nice post, Outlaw. Lester and Earl were true pioneers. Not only did Earl Scruggs pioneer the banjo picking style used by most, but he also pioneered a flat-pick guitar style with 3 fingers. He was a great one.
Also, about that video Cripple Creek...Cripple Creek is a town in Colorado, and that's a song about my beloved state. It actually has words, but it is more well-known in the instrumental version. Great song.
This is a great blog, and I'm glad you linked to it. As I said on Appleseed's post last week, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the whole thing. I haven't listened to the recording, and I don't think that I will. My initial reaction was, "I'm sure he's far from the first." But as it's stayed in the spotlight, I've really gotten upset about the whole thing.
I'm a high school teacher. I see kids do despicable things every day. And most of the time, you can trace it to the fact that they've never had anyone in their lives set an example of a what a man (or woman) is. It has nothing to do with age; it has everything to do with doing the right thing. Williams, as a leader and role model for his players, was setting a terrible example. I just hope we get to a point where everyone in a position of leadership is ready and willing to show what it means to be an adult. That's what this is about.
That's quite a take. This is something that I am still trying to wrap my head around. I have an inkling that it happens virtually everywhere, which is why I agree with you. My thought immediately went to the well-known hockey tradition of "putting money on the board". I wonder if it might be more of a deterrent if the NFL made the Saints play with a greatly reduced salary cap for a couple of years and forfeit all profits as their fine. It would be akin to the death penalty in college football, and it would set the team in total rebuild mode. Tough call for sure. Great blog! I love when Passion comes through in writing.
Also, Chris LeDoux's "You Just Can't See Him From the Road" is one of my favorites, but my current favorite of his is "The Ride". Such an outstanding song.
And this was a great post. You know I'm a big-time fan of real country music. Today's country is little more than people trying to sound like some kind of hillbilly, but they don't know what the hell they're talking about. It's all an act. What set the guys from the old days apart was that they sang about what they knew. They were just country kids.
Johnny Cash is always going to be king for me. And I love Merle Haggard. I also share a name with Willie Nelson, and nobody sings the gospel like Willie. I love listening to the Bill Mack Show when I'm driving my semi up and down the road.
Chris LeDoux is the most prominent on my iPod. Love the guy, and Kaycee, WY, is in some beautiful country, at least to the west of there in the Bighorn Mountains.
These days, I like cowboy music. I'm not big on the Texas Country music because most of them just try and sound like outlaws, but act like rock stars. I do like Aaron Watson, and I'm really into Ryan Bingham.
They're on the way, Jay. I promise. I'm living alone in a new place, so I have plenty of time on my hands I'll get to it one of these days. Someday I gotta get up to 100 blogs on this ole site.

And I also always like a good version of the cowboy standard, "Night Rider's Lament".

And anything written by Kristofferson is pure gold. Bar none, the greatest songwriter to ever live.
