He absolutely did the right thing. These are not high school students, and the players don't need to be protected. If the roles were reversed, we'd hear about it, and the common thought would be that Van Gundy was wrong for hating his players.
I hate how professional sports always elevates the athletes, and we then chastise the coaches when they say anything about the players that seems negative. If Howard wants to create a positive image for himself, he shouldn't do things that could take away from that image.
I'm not a huge NBA guy, but I don't think Sloan is top 5. He was a great coach. But I like left's list better. I think that George Karl is a great coach. But he's got no titles to show for his 1,000+ victories. A guy has to have won titles to be in that conversation, regardless of the era.
That argument is not legitimate until there is a far more equitable system for determining a national champion. The entire system of college football is flawed. People say that TCU doesn't deserve a BCS bowl because they don't face the "elite" competition, but that is a product of the system. If recruits knew that they'd have a shot, they might go to a MWC school, or any other "mid-major" conference. Most Mountain West locales are far more pleasant year-round than, say, Arkansas. It's a broken system, and I'm not just talking about the BCS.
Now that I can definitely get on board with. Bicycle racing is another one (aside from the doping) that is probably tougher - and rougher - than most give it credit for.
Max, you did well picking base jumping, but if you think the only "rough" thing about bullriding is getting stepped on, you need to study up a little more.
I don't want to make left's argument for him, so I'll leave it at that for now. But you are simply wrong on that assertion.
Oh, and most land grant universities have rodeo teams (read: state universities), though it is largely concentrated west of the Mississippi. Find me a school with an ag college, though, and I'll find you a rodeo team, which includes bullriding. Rodeo is a very legitimate scholarship sport.
I can't believe nobody said Jimmy Howard. Lord Howard will smite you. Are you not aware that he will again win the Calder in this, his 7th rookie season, as well as winning the Masterson, Jack Adams, Lester Pearson, Richard, Selke, Lady Byng, and Heisman trophies this year? You should both be ashamed.
Everybody knows that the only good team needs Jimmy Howard, and only Jimmy Howard. He is the Alpha and Omega, both Jedi Master and Sith Lord.
Frankly, the "salary average" cap numbers created this monster. That is something that the NHL should look to change next time around. A player's cap number should be more in line with his actual salary. I don't understand exactly how the numbers work in the NBA and NFL, and maybe the hard cap means that those type numbers wouldn't work, but the cap numbers should be counted in a more sensible way.
If there is any justice in the world, Jimenez will win in a run-away. In fact, it should be unanimous if he wins 20.
Yes, I'm the biggest Rockies honk on this site, so take that for what it's worth. However, Rockies hitters have consistently been overlooked for postseason awards based upon the Coors Field factor, even in the humidor era. If that logic is to be applied to hitters' awards, then a pitcher having a season like Jimenez is having while pitching half of his games in Coors Field is having one of baseball's all-time pitching seasons, far better than those of Johnson, Doc, or Wainwright.
Otherwise, it's time for the national talking heads and award voters to give up their Coors Field hate.
In all seriousness, both are deserving. I just don't like Shanahan.
