If I were Heatley and I had the opportunity to play a full season on the opposite wing from Ales Hemsky I would have said yes instantly.
Posted Thursday July 16, 2009, About: Havlat rips 'Hawks for Tallon firing
Apparently McDonough had a hand in the Campbell contract, not sure if he did an end around the GM or told Tallon to make sure they got him.

While he can certainly help the transition game, his defensive work is a mess and he doesn't look interested in it alot of the time.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but if the cap goes down significantly, the pens are screwed.

When you have 6 players signed for approx 36 million. You're going to have troubles with a lower cap.

Crosby 9 mil
Malkin 9 mil
Stall 4 mil
Fleury 5 mil (I think)
Gonchar 5.5 mil (I think)
Orpicks 4 mil (I think)

So if the cap drops even to 50 million. You have 14 million to sign 4 defensemen, 4 top 6 wingers, 5 bottom six forwards, and a backup goaltender.
Posted Tuesday July 14, 2009, About: Jays: Teams can't negotiate with Halladay
I don't think JP and the rest of the Jays brass have ever been serious about trading Doc.

All I've heard JP say was that they would listen. So if someone calls him up saying we'll give you young starter with high potential A, young hitter B, top pitching prospect C & D and top hitting prospects E & F, plus we'll take Wells contract off your hands for Halladay. Then he may make a deal. But that's the extent of it. No negotiations, no change this player for that player. Just if someone comes by and floors him with an offer, is there a chance that Halladay goes someplace.

You know, I almost wish the Jays hadn't had such a hot start. It blew the expectations for this season right out of proportion. Going into this season and into spring training it was always let's use this season to get the kids some time and look forward to Marcum and McGowan back in 2010 and make a run then.

As it's looking now, the top three for next seasons rotation are Halladay, Romero and Marcum.

I have been a proponent of the fire JP plan for awhile now. But the one thing I will say is that he has managed to restock the system with some good young arms.

The problem right now is that they never envisions the economy going cold like this and the cap having a large drop as it's going too.
Posted Thursday May 07, 2009, About: NHL fighting Coyotes move to Canada
Ok Minny moved originally because Tom Hicks wanted a team in Dallas and basically threw money around until he got a team.

Fan support was never a problem for the Jets or Nordiques. The problem they had was the corporate base wasn't really there and they both needed new rinks. The new rink in 'peg only seats 16k or something like that and doesn't have enough boxes for an NHL team (if memory serves) and again the corporate base isn't there. In Quebec it's the same thing, the colisee was renovated but not to the standards required for NHL, and again the corporate base of the province is montreal as compared to Quebec City.

Ballsillie if I remember correctly was only planning on having the team in hamilton for a few years while he had a building built in Kitchener/Waterloo.

The Ballsillie/Bettman feud started with the proposed Nashville purchase where Ballsillie started selling seasons tickets in Hamilton before he had the team purchased.
Posted Wednesday March 04, 2009, About: Rangers want Lightning star
I watched Marc Stall play for four years with the Sudbury Wolves, he's going to be an absolute stud defenseman in a couple of seasons. He's developing the same way in the NHL he did in the OHL, let the defensive side of the game get comfortable first, then start to bring in the offensive side.

He'll be a serious Norris Candidate no later then 2011-2012
Posted Wednesday January 07, 2009, About: NHL considers Christmas games
I agree with Hank, put the Heritage classic on Christmas Day. Make it the only game of the day. They have to stop playing it on New Years Day, going up against a full slate of college football bowl games. If it's on christmas then it's up solely against NBA games, make sure it's broadcast on network television and not Versus. Also make it the only hockey game played on christmas.
Posted Wednesday December 03, 2008, About: Lawyer: Suspended Vikings to sue NFL
The product is on a banned list, I'm sure there has got to be a similar product that they could have taken that isn't on the banned list. They have no legal standing for the lawsuit, product is banned. I didn't know the rule isn't a legal defense.

They take a banned substance they get suspended simple as that. I mean if Ricky Williams gets suspended for pot, then they have got to suspend someone for taking a steriod masking agent, even if they claim that they weren't using it as such.
Posted Tuesday November 04, 2008, About: Study: MLB's worst fielder is...
Jeter at one time was among the best all-around shortstops in baseball. He was a slightly above average defender and a great hitting shortstop. Now, he's a below average fielder, not sure if I'd put him last among starting shortstops, but definitely in the bottom rank. He's lost a step or two on the basepaths, a little speed on the bat and most of his pop.

My opinion for best defensive shortstop in baseball is John MacDonald in Toronto. If he could hit above .250 he'd be an everyday player and have a closetful of gold gloves. Most of his errors are on balls that Jeter wouldn't have a prayer of getting to. Unfortunately his batting average hovers in the .230 range so he's a defensive replacement/spot starter.
Posted Tuesday September 30, 2008, About: Devils question Fedorov's abilities
Fedor has always coasted, all the way back to his days in the OHL with Sudbury. He just doesn't have the desire and ambition to play. The tools are all there, he just doesn't seem interested.
Posted Tuesday September 30, 2008, About: Penguins get bad news on Gonchar
The pens are in some trouble. Not miss the playoffs trouble, but combine the injuries to Whitney and Gonchar with the losses of Malone, Roberts, Ruttu, Laroques this offseason - the contributions of these guys goes beyond the score sheet, every team in the league needs the heart and soul warrior type guys to succeed and I'm not sure who the pens have left in that mold - not to mention loosing Hossa and replacing him with Satan, not even close to an even swap. Gonchar may have been a defensive liability in the past, but he has very quietly worked upon and improved his defensive game.
Posted Tuesday September 30, 2008, About: Why Blackhawks waived Khabibulin
The only place I see Khabi going is to LA. Forget about having cap space, they need to add salary to get above the salary floor. They have a goaltender of the future in Bernier and not much else, plus a young defense corps to boot. Why not snag Khabi off waivers for nothing let him face a ton of rubber while the defense gets a year under their belts and let Bernier season in the AHL for the year.
