While he can certainly help the transition game, his defensive work is a mess and he doesn't look interested in it alot of the time.
When you have 6 players signed for approx 36 million. You're going to have troubles with a lower cap.
Crosby 9 mil
Malkin 9 mil
Stall 4 mil
Fleury 5 mil (I think)
Gonchar 5.5 mil (I think)
Orpicks 4 mil (I think)
So if the cap drops even to 50 million. You have 14 million to sign 4 defensemen, 4 top 6 wingers, 5 bottom six forwards, and a backup goaltender.
All I've heard JP say was that they would listen. So if someone calls him up saying we'll give you young starter with high potential A, young hitter B, top pitching prospect C & D and top hitting prospects E & F, plus we'll take Wells contract off your hands for Halladay. Then he may make a deal. But that's the extent of it. No negotiations, no change this player for that player. Just if someone comes by and floors him with an offer, is there a chance that Halladay goes someplace.
You know, I almost wish the Jays hadn't had such a hot start. It blew the expectations for this season right out of proportion. Going into this season and into spring training it was always let's use this season to get the kids some time and look forward to Marcum and McGowan back in 2010 and make a run then.
As it's looking now, the top three for next seasons rotation are Halladay, Romero and Marcum.
I have been a proponent of the fire JP plan for awhile now. But the one thing I will say is that he has managed to restock the system with some good young arms.
Fan support was never a problem for the Jets or Nordiques. The problem they had was the corporate base wasn't really there and they both needed new rinks. The new rink in 'peg only seats 16k or something like that and doesn't have enough boxes for an NHL team (if memory serves) and again the corporate base isn't there. In Quebec it's the same thing, the colisee was renovated but not to the standards required for NHL, and again the corporate base of the province is montreal as compared to Quebec City.
Ballsillie if I remember correctly was only planning on having the team in hamilton for a few years while he had a building built in Kitchener/Waterloo.
The Ballsillie/Bettman feud started with the proposed Nashville purchase where Ballsillie started selling seasons tickets in Hamilton before he had the team purchased.
He'll be a serious Norris Candidate no later then 2011-2012
They take a banned substance they get suspended simple as that. I mean if Ricky Williams gets suspended for pot, then they have got to suspend someone for taking a steriod masking agent, even if they claim that they weren't using it as such.
My opinion for best defensive shortstop in baseball is John MacDonald in Toronto. If he could hit above .250 he'd be an everyday player and have a closetful of gold gloves. Most of his errors are on balls that Jeter wouldn't have a prayer of getting to. Unfortunately his batting average hovers in the .230 range so he's a defensive replacement/spot starter.
