This really IS weird,....... so many people were picking the Tigers as the eventual WS team.
Posted Friday May 09, 2008, About: Tavarez hears Rockies trade rumors
I would be sorry to see Taverez go,...... he might not be the greatest pitcher, but he afforded the red sox rotation with some versatility,....... and he's a nice guy
Posted Friday May 02, 2008, About: Colon wants to stay with Sox
Sean Casey was the "steal" of the year,....... hopefully

Sean Casey was the "steal" of the year,....... if Colon is half as good then the deal will have been worth it
Posted Thursday May 01, 2008, About: Colon wants to stay with Sox
Colon will shed a few pounds,....... and there have been plenty of successful pitchers who were a little overweight. When I played minor league ball, our ace was pretty heavy. The extra weight may cut down his stamina, but not necessarily his early game effectiveness,...... We'll see, won't we? I think he's going to do OK, and I'm glad we have him. He's sure as hell going to be a better deal than Lugo, right?
Posted Thursday May 01, 2008, About: Colon wants to stay with Sox
Colon could turn out to be the Schilling replacement,.....they certainly have similar physiques, eh? Dice-K is looking like the ace,...... Beckett's a lttle disappointing,.... Lester looks solid for sure,..... Buchholz developing,...... Wake will always be Wake,..... And then there's Masterson,....... oh yeah, and Tavarez. That's eight starters,.....nearly all of them high quality,...... If Boston can't keep a 5-man rotation going with this bunch, then something's wrong. But Tito's talent for juggling players should help a lot. I even think that Cash will come around in time to help behind the plate. The Red Sox just need to start scoring runs.
Posted Wednesday April 16, 2008, About: Schilling denies NY interest
The Red Sox will get by without Schilling, and after making about $100million in the last ten years, Curt's gonna be okay, too,... Frankly I've never understood why ridiculously wealthy players aren't willing to leave the game,.... I sure would. One year making ten million and I'd be on the beach. And in Schilling's case, his career is basically over,... the Red Sox have already filled his spot in the rotation,.... Why fight it? Take the money and go fishing on your million dollar yacht. It'll be fun. Ego can kill you. Relax, Curt. You had a good run,.... nothing left to prove,...... let it go.
Posted Sunday April 13, 2008, About: Why did Girardi pitch to Manny?
Best signs for the Red Sox are that Drew, Lugo and Crisp are hitting. Manny's hot. Papi will come around unless he's really hurt. Youk seems to be the offensive workhorse,...... the 1-2 tandem of Ellsbury and Pedroia leading off is the best thing the Sox could possibly do,..... Freakin' Ellsbury can run so fast the cameras can't keep up with him,...... Sean Casey was perhaps the most brilliant addition to the team,.... the guy can obviously hit for average,.... I can't understand why he was " unemployed" Boston got a hell of a deal with Casey....... They got a hell of a deal with Colon, too,..... If Colon doesn't hold up, I feel like Masterson is ready,......... but I think Colon will hold up. He should be good for 10-12 starts. If Jacoby develops into superstar status anytime soon, then he will provide the Sox with an extra weapon. Pitching is worrisome,........ Lester will be Ok,... not so sure about no-hitter Buchholz. But just having a starting twosome like Becket and Dice-K,,,,, with Wake and Lester in the wings,..... Jeez,.... how many team would kill for that? I think the Yanks would. The Sox may not be perfect, but they're pretty deep. They can man their 5-starter rotation from the corral of Becket, Dice-K, Wake, Lester, Buchholz, Colon, Tavarez and Masterson....For a repeating champ, that oughta do it.
Posted Friday April 04, 2008, About: Colon comes up aces in Pawtucket opener
The Red Sox have Beckett, Dice-K, Wakefield, Lester, Buchholz, Colon, Tavarez and Masterson from which to keep a 5-man rotation rolling. Things may not turn out optimum in all cases, but I think they're covered fairly well. If Dice-K shows the anticipated improvement for his 2nd season,.... say 18 wins,.... and Beckett holds steady at 20 wins,.... then Boston could have the best 1-2 tandem in the AL East. That's usually good enough to win it. And Lester seems to be living up to his originally cited potential,..... Injuries will be the only problem for this rotation, and you can never know about those, eh? And I've said this enough that I'm sure some of you are getting tired of it,..... but Boston's offense is going to be significantly improved,... enough that the rotation will get a few extra wins. Example: Matsuzaka was 15-12 last season,... but should have been 17-10,... losing a couple of 1-run heartbreakers through no fault of his own. The rotation will also benefit from pitching with a lead more often than not,.... because Ellsbury, Pedroia and Youk are going to set the 1st-inning table for Papi and Manny,.... the Sox will score more 1st-inning runs than any other team in baseball. Pitchers like that.
Posted Thursday April 03, 2008, About: Chicago clubs watching Coco
Crisp has shown himself to be capable of hitting .300 with 16 homers,..... and for a guy who flashes the kind of leather he does in CF, that is plenty acceptable. Still I'm sorry about the conflict with Jacoby,...... You could confidently argue that Ramirez, Ellsbury, Crisp and Drew are the best 4-man outfield of any team in the majors,....Lots of weapons,...Manny's hitting and power,... Jacoby's blinding speed,... Coco's flawless fielding,..and we'll see if Drew rebounds offensively, though he is still one of the best on defense. and it is fair for Crisp to want to play every day. Tough spot. Glad I'm not Tito.
Posted Saturday March 22, 2008, About: Manny aiming for 500 HRs
It seems pretty clear that Ramirez wants to nail down his legacy and credentials in the next couple of seasons, and he suddenly seems extra-energized to do exactly that. As for his "eccentricity," ... I actually think that adds to the charm and personality of the Red Sox,...... sort of like Babe Ruth getting drunk and eating 30 hot dogs,... or Connie Mack strolling into the outfield and releasing a bird from under his hat,... or Mark Fydrich getting down and "patting" the pitcher's mound,..... This game is about fun,... and fun often includes eccentricity and humor. Don't make these guys out to be CEO's, because they're not. Manny's stats speak for themselves,.... if he accomplished them by being a little weird,.... it's ok with me. I'd like to see him in Boston for another 4 years for sure,........
Posted Saturday March 22, 2008, About: Manny aiming for 500 HRs
I'm guessing you can look for another "Manny season" this year,..... say along the lines of .310 - 35 -120, minimum. He obviously had his pride challenged last season, and that is one hell of a motivator. The way Ramirez cut through the post-season ought to tell you something. Manny's not done,... not by a long shot. Ortiz might be the main beneficiary,.... heh heh,..... I've said this before,..... if the Red Sox have Ellsbury leading off,.... Pedroia batting second,... followed by Ortiz and Ramirez,..... then Lowell and a rejuvenated Drew,... they will score more 1st-inning runs than any team in the majors,... and you know how that helps a pitching staff,...... Pitching with a lead is a starter's preference, to be sure. That is going to be the Red Sox key to success this year,.......
Posted Friday February 29, 2008, About: Big Papi wants to re-sign with Sox
At age 32, Ortiz has plenty of good years ahead of him in the DH role. It is unlikely that the Red Sox would be willing to part with him. If he comes back in 2008 with a season anywhere in the vicinity of .300 - 40 - 120,... then he can write his own contract. The good news is that Papi is neither greedy, nor an egomaniac. A four-year deal beneficial to both sides shouldn't be a problem.
Posted Thursday February 28, 2008, About: Red Sox kick tires on Garcia
I think the Red Sox are over-reacting just a bit to Schilling's arm problems. Acquiring Colon might turn out Ok,.... but Lester and Buchholz each have the ability to win 15 games,... and Tavarez is there to give them some rest with spot starts. The Sox may be inching toward that six-man rotation after all,... and I'm not saying that's a bad thing. God forbid that Beckett or Dice-K should go on the DL this season,.... but with Wake, Lester and Buchholz,.. along with Tavarez and Colon, the Sox should be able to keep their rotation rotating. And have no fear that Masterson will get a few spot starts, as well,... he may even be the "surprise" of the pitching staff. It's interesting that by acquiring Colon, the Sox got a pitcher without even parting with Coco Crisp. The Red Sox are going to be stacked for 2008.
Posted Thursday February 28, 2008, About: Dodgers-Sox may draw 115,000
That level of interest in the game is a relief to me, and a happy break from the steroid madness that has gripped the sport. As a political colleague observed this morning, Congress will investigate Roger Clemens, but not Dick Cheney. Congress needs to re-orient its perspective, eh? I'd love to see the Dodgers and Red Sox draw 100,000 in the exhibition season. 2008 is going to be a hell of a season.

I'm not so sure about this one. Bargain-hunting is fine, but this sounds like trolling for a miracle. Fingers crossed.
Posted Sunday February 24, 2008, About: Sox want pitching for Crisp
Let's remember,... before Schilling turned up lame, it was planned for Buchholz to begin the season at Pawtucket. As a 5-man staff, perhaps they will be a little squeezed this year,.... the threat of an injury is always insideous. I bet Tavarez makes ten starts. Another decent starter wouldn't hurt. But RunItUp, I also feel that offensive output is going to be noticably better in '08, also. The only position player I see not doing as well in '08 as in '07 is Lowell,... and that's just because his '07 was so monsterous.
Posted Sunday February 24, 2008, About: Sox want pitching for Crisp
Francona could lay out a revolving 4-man OF system which would keep everybody happy. You need 486 outfielder games in a full season,... not counting playoffs. Divide that by four and you get over 120 games per player. Add in the likely injuries, and the system makes even more sense,... though everyone will be plenty rested by the end of the season. Tito should have thought of this,.... maybe he has.
Posted Sunday February 24, 2008, About: Sox want pitching for Crisp
As long as the "prospect" isn't Buchholz, Ellsbury, Lester, Lowrie or Masterson,.... then go for it.
Posted Saturday February 23, 2008, About: Manny hires Boras as agent
Dang,.... I like Manny and I hate Boras. This is a tough one. It DOES however seem to be more aimed at the Red Sox NOT picking up those option years after 2008. But I don't see even a pirate like Boras getting Manny $20M. Personally, I think the Sox WILL exercise the option,... though Manny is preparing for the other contingency. That's how it goes, I guess.
Posted Friday February 22, 2008, About: Manny sending message?
---I think we'll see Manny come around with a minimum .300+,.. 30 HR and 100+ RBI. I also think that he's starting to think about how he wants to go out and how he will be remembered. He definitely wants to have that monster season to add to his legacy. He already knows that he will surpass 500 HR early in the season,..... 2008 is Manny's crucible year. He's still capable of .320 - 40 - 120,..... but whether or not we see that is the question hanging in the air. But one thing is certain,..... a rebounding Manny, combined with some of the Red Sox' other ascending offensive threats - Ellsbury, Youk - and a healthier Papi,... spells about 900 runs for the season,... and that in turn points to a more successful rotation. 2008 is shaping up to be Boston's crowning season, if you ask me. All the variables are coming into place,.. If any team was ever trajectoried to repeat, it's the Sox in 2008.
Posted Friday February 22, 2008, About: Manny sending message?
The Red Sox would probably pick up the first option year if, for no other reason, than to buy them some time to find Manny's eventual replacement. If Manny has that "monster year" that Ortiz referred to, then the liklihood is only greater. And who's to say that Ramirez isn't capable of a couple more productive years, anyway? He certainly seems to think he is. I think 38 is about the age that performance starts the inevitable decline,,.. Manny will play for Boston in '09.
