The Yanks are doing this based on their research that shows if you extend a pitchers arm 30% or more innings greater than the previous season the long-term damage is almost inevitable. I don't like it but there is evidence to support their claim and they don't want to ruin the guy.
The thing that bothers me though is this innings limit bullcrap. One inning could be 10 pitches, another could be 30. A 5 inning outing could be 104 pitches, an 8 inning outing could be 110. If they want to put some sort of limit on a guys arm it should be total pitches not innings pitched.
And joec, he pulled the same crap while he was on the Phillies. Padilla just doesn't like throwing to good hitters.
