Posted Saturday July 18, 2009, About: Bay turns down big Red Sox offer
Did someone really say on page one of this thread that the NL East might be the worst division in baseball? Get a clue. The AL West is awful -- AWFUL -- and the AL Central and NL West aren't much better.

This sounds like a punchline-less Deep Thoughts skit.
Posted Monday February 09, 2009, About: Growing market for Abreu?
Why aren't all teams interested? First of all, any SMART club knows Abreu is awful defensively, which, if they are smart enough, eliminates all 16 NL teams, because Abreu should be DH'ing, primarily at the very least.

So that leaves 14 clubs to start with. The Yankees and Red Sox are out, as they have their DH situation filled out. The Orioles are going to use Huff/Scott in that role. Tampa inked Pat Burrell. The White Sox have Thome, who can't play first, and even if he could, Konerko is manning that spot.

Cleveland has Hafner returning at DH, Detroit has Sheffield. KC has a cheaper Butler with upside, not to mention that it would probably take a lot of dough to get Abreu to KC, considering their chances to contend - but they don't often spend that kind of money, particularly when they did that with Guillen last year.

The Twins have Jason Kubel, cheaper with similar upside, and Kubel, when healthy, can actually man a corner OF spot... The A's have Cust and/or Giambi at DH... Texas must choose between Chris Davis and Hank Blalock, while the other plays first... no room for Abreu, though.

That leaves very few options.

Either a team has to put up with Abreu defensively, which opens up some NL clubs as well as a few AL teams, or the Angels and Mariners fight over Abreu.

And Eagles Fan... there's no way Manny gets the 4/$100m he's asking for. It's Feb. 9 and the best offer he's received so far is for two years. No reason for the Dodgers to bid against themselves and with Crede close to signing in SF, the Giants might be completely out of the Manny race altogether... and they were never going to go more than two years anyway, clearly.
Posted Tuesday December 23, 2008, About: Red Sox eyeing Mauer in 2011
Too bad Varitek isn't even good enough to be a patch job. He can't be a stop-gap when he can't contribute regularly.
Posted Monday December 22, 2008, About: Jays like Lowe, might trade Rolen
So because Lowe cheated on his wife, he's overrated as a pitcher? Some of you guys just aren't intelligent baseball fans.

Go read something, get yer learn on.
Posted Saturday December 06, 2008, About: Tazawa signing setting up bigger Red Sox grab?
It's a good signing, certainly, very cheap, has upside. But by the time Tazawa is settled into the big-league rotation, Beckett will be a free agent (after 2010)... which makes such signing that much smarter.

If Beckett proves worthy of an extension, they'll have that option to a large degree. If not, Buchholz, Bowden and now Tazawa give them the necessary depth.
Posted Thursday November 06, 2008, About: Yankees eye Brewers' Cameron
Cameron, 36 in January, is still a good defensive center fielder, and that, combined with his 52 extra-base hits, 17 steals and ability to draw the walk, is why he's sought after by the Yankees.

Not to mention that Cabrera is average at best defensively, took a large step back at the plate in 2008 and is easily replaceable in 2010. So no need to worry about age in Cameron when the player you are trading is as replaceable as a paper towel.

Betemit has proven to be nothing more than a utility player, too.

And jgb, this isn't a rumor. The Yankees admitted at the GM meetings Wednesday that they have had talks about Cameron with the Brewers, and Milwaukee confirmed it.

Their interest makes a ton of sense, since their outfield defense was among the very worst in baseball, and Cameron immediately gives them a 10-14 run improvement, if not more, depending on how often Damon would have otherwise been ran out there.

Plus, there is no long-term commitment with Cameron, and the Yankees outfield defense absolutely must get better (infield, too, where only Cano was average or better last year) if they plan on contending in that division.

Matsui-Holiday-prospects three-way involving Seattle has been bandied about, too.
Posted Tuesday July 01, 2008, About: M's may be deadline traders
Lose him later?

How so? He just re-upped for five years. If the Mariners don't trade him, he's in Seattle until he's 39 and done as a player.

Why would KC take on 16 mil per year for four more years after 2008 and give up a good, young, cheap pitcher when they are working under a limited payroll?

Think before you type duworkson...
Posted Sunday March 16, 2008, About: Athletics, Red Sox talking trade
At $5 mil, why would the Red Sox, the team that generates the second-most revenue in all of baseball and annually has the second-highest payroll, worry too much about trading Crisp?

A cancer? That's not enough of a risk to force them to "get rid" of him. He's never shown anywhere at any time that he's got clubhouse problems, let alone to that extent.

Lazo,

While I pretty much agree with everything you said above, one thing I do have a different take on...

"He'll move... just when the Sox are ready to move him."

Of course.

But I think Crisp will be traded when Epstein and company are satisfied with the return, no matter when that is.

One thing the Sox have done consistently since Theo and his group took over the front office duties is never make a trade unless the reward is advantageous to what is being sent out.

The Boston Red Sox haven't won two titles because they get bullied into trading talent. They're a great organization because they dictate the pace and temperament of negotiations. It doesn't mean they don't ever make mistakes, it just means that they are more than just willing to fully accept the consequences, and are prepared to act accordingly if it doesn't work out.
