Louisville had a pretty solid program right up until the end of Petrino's run there. It's easier to get the Cardinals into a BCS game than the Red Raiders. And Leach used to live in Kentucky. He was the OC for the Wildcats in his pre-Big 12 days. Might not be a bad move for hiim.
Posted Sunday March 22, 2009, About: Weis hopes sophomore QB pushes Clausen
Is there a coach in the country who doesn't want his backup pushing his starter?

I don't see how you can really judge Jimmy Clausen to this point. The O-line his freshman year was horrific. It wasn't a lot better last year. And when was the last time Notre Dame could run the football? The only people who thought Notre Dame was going to win 9-10 games last year were Notre Dame homers. But they got better. This season coming up will be a better barometer. The line should be better. He'll have plenty of weapons. He'll have plenty of time in the system.
Posted Friday January 30, 2009, About: Gary Williams on way out at Maryland?
In Oklahoma, the conventional wisdom is that Jeff Caple is going to either Maryland or Arizona at the end of the year. He would be a great fit for the Terps. Personally, I hope he stays, but he seems increasingly dissatisfied with basketball's lower tier status at OU, even with OU being a top 5 team this year.

With Sam Bradford back, the ability to start right away, and an offense that will get the football in your hands more than everyone else recruiting you, Mr. Randle, you should consider a future at the University of Oklahoma. It just makes sense.

45-35, 39-33, 65-21... you know, it doesn't matter. Oklahoma won the league. Again. Instead of looking at Oklahoma, maybe the eyes of Texas should take a look in the mirror. Texas' ONE conference championship this decade is an incredible under achievement, considering all the built in advantages of being the university of Texas. All of this crying about unfairness makes Texas just sound weak. Your fate is always in your own hands until you lose. Texas should think about not losing. And scheduling someone again, in the non-conference. Nice lineup next year, Longhorns. East Popcorn State not available?

Kindle coming back means the defense should keep a strong pass rush, but it will be important for Kindle to be able to get after the QB without Orakpo taking up attention on the other side. Still waiting to see who will be back at Oklahoma. As far as I'm concerned, the Big 12 title resides in Norman until shown otherwise.

All weight jokes aside, I wonder how much attention he would get from other programs if he dropped about 100 lbs. He's a good coach. KU was horrible when he got there.

And I left one off... Florida.
Posted Monday January 05, 2009, About: Mack Brown: BCS still needs work
OU got Chattanooga when someone dropped at the last minute. They almost filled that slot with Clemson (before they agreed to the game with Alabama). OU ended up also playing a top 10 team (TCU) and the Big East Champion. And when the game was scheduled, @ Washington looked a little tougher than it turned out to be. OU has had home and homes recently with Alabama, Oregon, UCLA, and finish one with the 'U' next season. For the record, when the season is over, OU will have played 7 or 8 rankd teams. Cincinnati (Big East Champs), TCU (top 10), Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Nebraska, and maybe Kansas.

28-2 TD to INT ratio is pretty good. But I think the guy that really made that offense hum was Percy Harvin. I wish he had been able to play against Alabama so I could have seen how Florida matched up, at full strength, with a bear of a defense.
Posted Monday December 15, 2008, About: Heisman loss motivates Tebow, Gators
Every school has those guys, unfortunately. Which is why guys like our Heisman finalists should make us all at least a little hopeful that the country isn't going straight down the crapper.
Posted Monday December 15, 2008, About: Heisman loss motivates Tebow, Gators
Well, our big man at DT, Granger, got arrested for stealing from Burlington Coat Factory last year before the Fiesta Bowl. Stoops sent him home alone on a bus before the game. WV had a ton of success on us, in large part b/c their full back was able to get yardage up the middle. It made attacking the edge that much easier. I think Granger might have helped.
Posted Monday December 15, 2008, About: Heisman loss motivates Tebow, Gators
I think the reason it might matter, if it does, is it gives you a clue about where a team's mindset is. Are they working hard in their downtime? Are they stealing coats and clothes from a clothing store? I don't think the talent or coaching gap is that big when you get into games like this, so the team that wins is usually the one that has the right frame of mind going in.
Posted Monday December 15, 2008, About: Heisman loss motivates Tebow, Gators
And I'm sure Tebow (like any good leader) will try to use this as a thing to rally his team around. Any good Sooner fan can remember Torrance Marshall talking to Chris Weinke about getting his boy's trophy back. And OU will use Tebow's comments to get their guys ready. In the end, it won't matter. What matters is how your team shows up after a month off. And that can be unpredictable. I just hope that there aren't any Burlington Coat Factories in Miami.

This thread has gone crazy. Bradford, McCoy, and Tebow are all great kids and tremendous football players, and anyone who says different is an idiot. Each are smart kids that do well in the classroom. All three give a lot back to their communities. Each come pretty close to maximizing their ability, in the offense each runs. Bradford couldn't run Florida's offense, just like Tebow couldn't run OU's offense. Tebow probably gets more national media love than the other two, b/c he's been on the national stage a little longer, and sportswriters and media types have had a chance to develop... feelings... for him. I'll leave that at that. If McCoy and/or Bradford come back next year (it looks like McCoy will for sure), he will be getting more of the love Herbie has been laying on him for a while. We know the Big 12 doesn't play great defense overall. We know the SEC doesn't play great offense overall. We know conferences don't play each other, but teams do. What we don't know is how Oklahoma and Florida match up. And that's a conversation for another thread.

I'm proud of Sam and I'm looking forward to seeing his statue go up outside of the stadium.

I'm sure Oklahoma could find room for both of those boys if they wanted to play in Norman.
Posted Sunday November 30, 2008, About: Blowout could be end for Weis
That cuts both ways. ND barely lost most of the games they lost (USC game tonight notwithstanding - and USC has the best defense in the country). Notre Dame was a young team this year. They were inconsistent. They faded down the stretch. All of this is very common with a very young team. But they DID get better. Everyone has just forgotten how horrible they were last year. Just because Stoops/Tressel/Urban Meyer took over relatively talented, but poorly coached teams and won a national championship in year #2 is no reason for ND to have those kinds of expectations. Sometimes it takes 5+ years to build a program. His first recruiting class was mostly done in just a couple of weeks after the Patriots long playoff run ended that year. Give him 5 years. If you fired him now, somebody else would get to win with Charlie's young and talented players. Weis is a jerk, but he deserves the opportunity to see this rebuilding effort through.
Posted Wednesday November 26, 2008, About: Sources: Weis' buyout smaller than expected
Notre Dame's problem, to some extent, is that they do not know where their program is at right now. I read message boards and I see names like Bob Stoops and Urban Meyer come up. Notre Dame can't get those guys. The last two coaching searches should have sent the message home. Notre Dame will eventually be back, but it won't be a destination job again until AFTER someone elevates them back to their place at the top of the mountain.

I actually think ND needs to give Charlie at least another year. But if they don't, the Domers need a realistic list of coaches, and they have to keep in mind that there are several open jobs, at least a couple of which might be more attractive than ND right now.

I'm not sure where all the schedule bashing for ND comes from. They play USC every year. They play Michigan almost every year. They play Michigan State every year. Navy (for all the academy bashing) has been a bowl team every year for a while. Purdue is an in-state rival. North Carolina was a ranked team this year. BC is usually a good team. Pitt is a talented team. Sure, they played San Diego State, but tick off the horrible teams everyone else plays OOC. And then most conferences have a horrible team or two in conference.
Posted Wednesday November 26, 2008, About: Empty seats for OU-OSU Bedlam?
OSU has had about 10,000 empty seats at every home game this season. On top of that, they raised ticket prices. The Orange Aggies are not happy.
Posted Wednesday November 26, 2008, About: Sources: Weis' buyout smaller than expected
Notre Dame would need to know they are getting a good coach before they fire Charlie. No point in ruining the recruiting continuity this season, to bring in a guy who can neither coach nor recruit.

So who could ND realistically get? You need a guy who can recruit to a school with high academic standards. A guy who an develop players. How about the Irish get Jim Harbaugh? Or. Wait a year and get Jim Harbaugh next year.
