Hahaha good to see bgm is laying of the sauce still.
Seriously tho, this situation reeks. Boots had a 10 million debt to Craig Leipold listed in his assets when he filed for bankruptcy. And another debt to AEG entertainment, who currently own the kings. AEG also coincidentally enough, has an agreement with the Sprint Center in Kansas City, the same one that Boots was trying to put a team in no longer than a year ago.
That's quite the web of money changing hands there, with TWO other owners of NHL franchises. If that's not having a vested interest in another team than I don't know what is. The rule that prevented this from happening disappeared from the rulebook, literally, and noone knows when it was removed.
The integrity of this League is really a joke. Gary's suspended owners before for "hurting the integrity of the game", hell even Samuelli is suspended. Doesn't this seem like a clear violation of that? Or was Gary just looking the other way because Boots had better business potential?

Haha yah. Realistically, I'd be ecstatic and somewhat surprised if he was in the talk for the Norris in '11. But your absolutely right, he's got the make up to be a lock-down #1 guy for the next decade.
Therrien Rocks | 06/23/08, 02:36 PM
Hahaha dead serious. You'll have to forgive me, this is the first bona-fide prospect the Leafs have had to get excited about in...well...my lifetime.
Luke Schenn for the Norris in 2009! Mark it down baby!

This is actually the most important comment on this thread.
They fought it in court, and lost, because the federal judge claimed the Russians were worried more about the money than losing the player.
It's definitely not a guarantee, but I think it's a possibility.
This could get mighty nasty.
The suspensions you speak of are only for IIHF sanctioned events ie. Olympics, World's, etc. Which is something that the Russian league could definitely fight in court I'm sure. In fact this whole process could be fought in court, seeing as there is not PTA in place.
What's happening here is the IIHF knows this could cause a ruckus, and is trying their best to peturb it from happening. Unfortunately, they really can't stop it from what I understand.
Just look at what happened when the NHL brought Malkin over from Russia when he was already under contract in the Super League, and that was with a PTA I believe. The Russians fought it, and lost - so now they're trying the same stunt on the NHL.
-Durk
That's exactly right. Malkin came out of the Russian Super league, where you are placed on a line forever basically. He was bred in that league as a number one center, and most Russians can't stand to be anywhere else once they hit the NHL. He's still young, but trust me as soon as he gets paid like a #1 center, he'll want to play as one.
The fact of the matter is, and T-fo already touched on it, is that once you sign your superstars there isn't much money to go around to address depth/role players. You already have Staal waiting to be your 2nd line centre, no need keeping Malkin there when that's not what he wants to be anyways.
I bet it gets done tonight at the draft.
