I don't think his weight is the problem. There are a lot of fatties that produce in MLB--Pablo Sandoval, Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera, Delmon Young. Sandoval and Fielder border on obese. Rodriquez's contract creates enormous expectations, which he's never met and certainly won't with advancing age and declining skills.

Fielder is a one-trick pony--he can hit, but his Moneyball stats lead one to conclude he is quite ordinary in other categories. Further, his physical conditioning is suspect, so he is likely to break down sooner rather than later. I agree with drip drop, he's a better fit in the AL as a DH--definitely not worth a long-term mega-contract in either league.
