Mr. Miyagi Jr,
You call me crap, then say to blame his parents for living in the D? Like they had a choice of living in luxury, but picked to live in Detroit? Maybe they have money trees where you live, but around here jobs are tough to find that will allow you to support a family. Maybe I overexxagerated in blaming it on NCLB, but the point was that every kid from the city is not dumb. Brandom Graham is doing pretty well at UM, and I have not heard anything about Jospeh Barksdale at LSU. I know this is a sore subject, but former OSU standout Andy Katzenmoyer reportedly had a sub 1.0 GPA that impacted his decision to turn pro. I think Original81 is correct. It is not that Perry did not pass classes, but the classes he passed may not be accepted because his school sucked.

Yes, please do not blame Nick for this. Nick did the best he could, but Detroit Public Schools struggle at times with trying to keep kids in school rather than drop out (as do most inner city schools). As a result, standards were lowered at his previous school most likely, and it was shut down. If you really want to find the root of the problem, it all comes back to NCLB as made by President GW Bush. It says "No Child Left Behind" but sets such high standards that most children are left behind. Plus the war cost the US a few dollars that could have been spent on education. *No disrespect to our miltary, they do a phenomonal job doing what our country asks* Sorry for getting on a tangent here, but this story to me is not about Nick Perry specifically, this could happen to any kid in any inner city. I am from the detroit area and here is what I see. Unless Birmingham Brother Rice, Country Day, or St. Mary's plucks a kid from detroit because he has "high academic abilities" that allow him to win athletic championships, it is hard for these kids. I have the utmost respect for the teachers in the DPS, but unfortuantely education is not as important to most of these kids. The exceptions are Cass Tech and Renaissance, which appear to be Detroit magnet schools.

Why not Greg Kampe from Oakland University. He is winning at a commuter school... seriously, like 12 people live on campus. Okay, more than 12, but not many more.

I hate to say it, but the Cavs will be better if they get Piston Ben. However, Ben is most effective on the offensive end with shooters. Lebron is a slasher, and Ben may get in his way. On the defensive end, Z is not Rasheed. Rasheed fed people to Ben for huge blocks, I am not sure Big Z can do that. But the Cavs are a much better interior defensive team now.

Skiles is from Michigan State. MSU alums are pretty proud, not sure if he would coach against his alma mater. And yes, West Virginbia would go nuts if they lose another coach, I want to see the train wreck.

MaceDamien, they are talking about flip murray, not saunders... honest mistake. To the first cat that hated on the Stones for being floppers, my comment to you is "so?" Since when is it bad to flop? Me personally, if Shaq is coming at me with 500 pounds of force (taking size and inertia into account... do the math), I am going to fall down before he hits me because I like my ribs where they are. Also, the Pistons of old were floppers but gritty. Laimbeer may have fell down a lot, but him and Mahorn would also throw a punch if need be (as would Isiah... not so much Joe). And don't get me started on Rodman. The current version may whine and complain a lot, but don't lump the bad boys in with this crew.

How about Bobby Huggins from West Virginia? That would entertain me on many levels. One, it would make Indiana interesting a la Bobby Knight. Secondly, it would take a west virginia coach, and that is always fun to watch.

Two comments.

1. he has said repeatedly that he does not want to catch again. It takes away from what little hitting he has.

2. He is probably as good of a pitcher as a minor league pitcher, and I think he would prefer to pitch than to catch at this point.

This guy is just a freak athlete. He can drive it 350+ supposedly. He can do anything well, but not good enough at any one thing to start for the Tigers. Maybe they can trade him to the Lions, they can always use guys who care. I personally would not want to get hit by Inge.

braveswin, I agree with you completely. If you look at club performance, Gooch is not doing his part (nor did he last year). But it is hard to compare leagues. Donovan was a chump in Germany, but he gets plenty of publicity and PT in MLS. Does that mean he is better than McBride or Dempsey? Getting back to the original issue here. Is Bradley a holding or an attacking mid? I thought he played holding for the national team, and did it quite well (except for the straight red against Canada). Other than Bradley, who does the US have in a holding mid? Pablo? I think the US is set for years in the mid with Bradley holding and a choice of Adu or Feilhaber attacking mid. I think Dempsey is a better flank mid than striker and he can pair with Edu or Szetela, which should allow Johnson, Ferrari, Rossi, or Altidore to play the roles of striker. In terms of defense, we seemed to have a lanky tall defender on the U-20 team who was wicked impressive (for that age group)... wallace maybe? Any thoughts?

yes, oxymoron. Kind of like Ohio State Rhodes Scholar or West Virginia Michigan Fan.

I just like the fact that if anybody picks on Bradley, Dempsey, Adu, Altidore, or Rossi (yeah, I said it), that Gooch has the ability to throttle them. Speaking of error prone central backs, Bocanegra is not exactly the model of perfection. I agree that Parkhurst and Demerit are solid players. All kidding aside about goonish behavior, Gooch has a role in stopping target players. He obviously cannot stop a Rooney, Tevez, or a player with immense pace who plays in space... you can't hit what you can't catch. However, I think he is solid with guys like Borgetti or Crouch (not the best example I know).

You think Bradley could eventually take the place of Giggs?

Why not Fulham? They seem to like Americans. Also, why isn't gooch in a bigger league? He is a great defender, but soccer players tend to be wimps and can't handle his contact. Soccer gets a bad rap for the diving and here is a standup guy who beats the crap out of people and the refs keep calling him for fouls. That is why the average American will never watch soccer; honor and toughness is rarely present.

Testaverde is the man, no argument there.

I said Michigan has NOT won anything with their NFL ready QBs. They won in 1997 with Griese, but that was a run-heavy offense with a stifling defense led by Woodson. Your point is taken with Testaverde and Kosar, but they left in the mid 80's. Toretta's NFL career can be summed up in the same way as my high school career, he was on the team but I wouldn't say he played.

How about Owen Hargreaves, he is actually Canadian (but plays for England internationally). He would be a star. You know who else is a phenomonal Canadian soccer player, but is less likely is Steve Nash. I would love to see him keep his fitness for the NBA season by playing some MLS... even for just a few games. Would it be a stunt? Of course. Would it cause the casual, I-hate-soccer-because-I-am-5'3"-and-will-play-in-the-NBA crowd to watch? Yes it would. I even think some hawky loving Canadians would watch him play. Beckham is a stunt, Nash would be a stunt, Hargreaves may be for real. But as a rare American who enjoys the beautiful game, I understand that for the sport to take off, they need to market the stars. Americans love the "me" game, except in Detroit where the Pistons win with a team concept, as do the Red Wings and Tigers. I am ranting... my point is Nash for Toronto FC.

hogshow, do you notice in your list that QB is not listed? Dorsey never panned out to much in the pros, but he managed a game. Since him, the U has not had a smart QB it appears. But what do I know? Besides SC, Michigan has been the best at producing NFL QBs in the last 10-15 years, and look where that has got them (Pounded by SC and beaten by Coach sweater vest).

krUGA, read the blog. We are not all idiots. Don't make blanket statements. Just kidding man, thanks for the info. I sincerely hope this kid gets the accomodations he needs to get a good education at whatever school he finally settles on. I am not familiar with UGA academically, but if this kid is as good as advertised, he will play in the league and have lots of microphones in his face. I will be rooting for him and UGA to give him what he needs in the classroom. But Richt is a good man (and a pretty good coach), so no worries there.

jon, are you serious? ALL students must get an 18 or 19 on their ACT to qualify for college in Michigan (without being prop 48). I am not sure of the number. I cannot speak for all schools and their policies, but I know at Michigan that Kevin Garnett was strongly considering attending with Robert Traylor (part of Fab Five II), but he did not score well on his tests and went pro. Jon, please do some research before you make such comments. It sounds to me like you lost a spot on a sports team to a guy who lacked a brain but could bench 300 pounds and run a 4.4. If this is the case, I understand and accept your comment.

The same could be said for a lot of schools. Penn State at linebacker, OSU at tailback, USC at everything, Hawaii at long haired samoan lineman... the list goes on. Other teams just find small prizes, like CMU QB Dan Lefevour... future QB of the Detroit "we don't believe in an offensive line" Lions.

UGa fans. We get it, you are proud of your bulldogs. But you are getting kind of petty and cheap. Dare I say you seem to have some sort of academic inferiority complex to Tech in much the same way OSU has one with UM? This is not to say Tech and UM are better than UGa and OSU, just an observation.

Miami could have said Miles won't be around after this year. They could have also said that Meyer will be in the NFL or Bowden will retire, but I guess they didn't or weren't convincing. LSU won this kid, simple as that. I am a Michigan fan, but I would have loved to see this kid at the U being the greatest safety prospect since Sean Taylor laced them up. Big shoes my friend... big shoes.
