Moore's case is indeed weak.
-Did Bertuzzi break his neck or was it the massive pileup afterwards.
-Would he have a broken neck had he turned around and engaged Bertuzzi.
-It's safe to say that Bertuzzi wanted to fight him but did he really go out intent on BREAKING his neck? that's a stretch.
-If Bert is a goon who shoudl be barred from the NHL for life, what about Pronger, Simon, Downie, Brashear...? They're all repeat offenders.
-Moore has never claimed to be permanently disabled. Why?
-According to the quirky "NHL code", did Moore invite the situation had he not
gone after Naslund?
-Moore was drafted in 1998 and played only 69 games in the NHL from 2001 to 2004, scoring 5 goals. Does that sound like a $38million dollar player?
He would have to prove that he's worth more than that and $38Mil. is compensation for his injury and not his actual worth.
I feel for the guy but I just think he's pissed at having his career being cut short and wants someone to pay bigtime. The Nhl is full of guy s that have never reached their potential due to injury (Brett Lindros, Bobby Orr, Dan Blackburn) and Moore is one of them.
Sadly, Boston's Patrice Bergeron could be the latest one.
My point is the league SHOULD come down on cheap shots and not simply act when a player gets wheeled out on a stretcher. That goes for BOTH SIDES, nit just Philly. The league sent reps to all 30 teams in September, with video footage in hand, telling players what wouldn't be tolerated and that punishments would be harsher. I guess that new initiative is done.
Second point, The Flyers were put on notice because of the disproportionate amount of suspensions they have so far compared to the rest of the league. Not for the nature of the hits and shots themselves, and not for the end result. That's what the NHL said back in December. Had Hatcher connected with Steen's head and put him out for the rest of the season, you dont think 'Coly' Campbell would get invovled? Come on.
You can still be a pest in this league and be clean about it, ask Sean Avery.
You can still hit hard and put guys out cleanly if you want, ask Scott Stevens.
You can still bully people around and stand up to adversity when push comes to shove, ask Georges Laraque.
(By the way, it's spelled Boulerice)
With regards to questionable hits, the NHL often states that it will punish these acts and not be influenced by the end results. Meaning that if a guy launches himself in mid-air, a la Hatcher, he'll get punished regardless of whether his victim gets right back up or goes out on a stretcher.
Hatcher clearly launched himself and the act should be punished even if he did hit his own teammate.
And besides, weren't the Flyers put on notice by the league for all these early season suspensions? What happened to that? Downie should be punished also for his sucker-punch because he's learned nothing from his suspension.
This team seems to embrace their "Broadstreet Bully" act of the 70's and try to bring it to today's game.
I know there's a lack of meda coverage in the US but not in Canada. If a Canadian media outlet breaks a story, A US outlet will pick it up. I totally agree that no one's interested in knowing what Crosby had for lunch but I would be interested in knowing about thr trials and tribulations of these guys. They're human so we dont believe the image of perfection that the NHL is promoting. I've heard the similar tale (no pun intended) about
Pronger but I've also heard other people vehemently deny that story. Who to believe.
For example when John Kordic died, everybody came out & said "sure we knew about his drug problem." Why
I have a friend who works in bars who personally seen a certain Ottawa goaltender do drugs in his establishment. Are we waiting for something tragic to happen to Emery and then we'll say "Sure we knew about it. it's a non-story".
The NHL media corps is a very tight one They all travel together, attend golf tournaments and summer BBQ's together and generally look out for each other. Heck here in Ottawa, our play-by-play guy works on 4 different networks doing Sens games (A-Channel, CBC, Sportsnet, Team 1200).
All I'm saying is if there is something more to the Samsonov story, the media has a journalistic duty to report it rather than ignore it for fear of being isolated as a snitch.
He's turning out to be one of those "what could have been" stories of unfulfilled potential. Sorta like Lindros, Yashin, Daigle...etc.
The NHL doesnt air out its laundry like other leagues do. It has no sports documentary reporting and we hardly if ever find out about guys' personal problems and shortcomings. I constantly hear stories of cheating players, some with gambling addiction and others with substance abuse problems. Somehow a cone of silence descends on the NHL and it's impossible to either get denials or confirmation on these rumors. To this day we still dont know why Pronger left Edmonton or what Sean Avery supposedly said to Jason Blake to spark a pre-game tussle in Toronto.
All this to say that I'm wondering of Samsonov has a personal problem of some kind that the league won't publicly talk about. You would think that a small speedy guy like him would excel in the new NHL. yet he's bouncing to a new team each year it seems and it's a mystery as to what's wrong with him.
