Domonic Brown should be the least of their worries. Straight off the bat: 1) The Phillies roster is an aging mess 2) Ryan Howard's remaining contract is one of the worst in baseball
Surely his value will never be higher for the Marlins to trade him? I can't see him hitting more than 25-30 HRs this year - if there's nobody on base in front of him and nobody behind him for protection then why is ANYONE going to bother throwing this guy a strike?
@CardsFan2 I like the sound of LaRoche in Texas. 1B has been a hole in that lineup too often for the past couple of seasons, and a left-handed stick with 30+ HRs (or more with 81 games at Arlington?) would give some much-needed balance and go some way to replacing Hamilton. They seem to like Moreland but he's going to need to take a big step up if he's going to be the long term answer. Kinsler to OF or Andrus to the D'Backs in some sort of package for Upton, moving Cruz to be the primary DH? Something like that would work.
The Rangers need another 20HR left handed bat. I think Murphy can take a step up this year and Profar hits OK from the left side, but they need another threat to worry right handed pitching.
I feel the same way about the Rangers. I wish Hamilton all the best (as long as he doesn't kill the Rangers over the next x years), but I'm sure glad that the Rangers havn't got $125m tied up to such a big unknown.
If it's a straight 5year $125m contract with no 'relapse' clauses or options who thinks it's a good contract for the Angels to give and who thinks it's bad? Would non-Angels/Rangers fans be happy if their team had just signed him to that deal?
If a player says he'll give you notice before signing elsewhere then doesn't I think you're entitled to make that known. Not sure he's crying about it or sounding like a jerk or whatever people have been saying - I don't think you'd find too many Rangers fans that would have been willing to cough up that contract to Hamilton. It's just too much of a risk.
I can't see the Rangers trading anything of value for a 38yo starting pitcher, even if it is for an ageless knuckler. I think someone already mentioned it, but I think the biggest loss isn't just his power but that fact that he was nearly the lone left-handed power source of that lineup. I hope David Murphy gets more playing time because I think he's underrated, but another 20+ HR left handed bat is required somewhere in that lineup to provide some balance.
In 2 years time the Angels could be reigning double WS champs or have 2 of the worst contracts in baseball on their books. It really could go either way.
Considering what the Rangers did for Josh Hamilton I can understand their disappointment that he did not offer them the expected opportunity to match/make a final offer. Torii Hunter was right when he said "Business is business but don't lie".

I'm sure there will be nothing in LA to tempt him. Oh... wait...
