The entire article went into the question of eligilbility. Because he played in some African All-Star game years ago, he would lose a year. He went to prep school in the US after the earlier mentioned game, which would cost him another year. So that's what it's all about.

I've seen the Cubs play in Philly and Pittsburgh this year. Both times they appeared listless and disinterested. Longtime Cubs fans near us both said that Lou had packed it in and was going through the motions.

But, he is one of the toughest players I have ever seen. Few have taken the punishment he has to his body and been able to play at his level for their whole career. If he is done, then the NBA is losing one of its true warriors.

I wish they could move this guy, but who would pick up that contract, or even a part of it. It's a case of "sometimes you add by subtracting" as coach Vermiel used to say. Would the Sixers be better without him? I say yes: no understanding of the game, no growth in seven years in Philly, lousy work ethic, etc. Some say Sammy is a fun guy, but this is the NBA, not a Bar-B-Que.

Take away Taschner's last ten appearances (8 ER in 7 inn) and he had a good year. Last year the Cubs thought Scott Eyre had nothing left and he worked out real well for the Phils. Maybe they'll get lucky again. Feel bad for Majewski and Koplove, both threw well this spring and probably figured they had a shot at making the club. Now they are victims of "we need another lefthander"thinking. Well,Taschner's never been tough on lefthanded hitters.

Getting Carlos Lee in Philly would be nice. It would also be possible since they would be dealing with Ed Wade, who they already fleeced in the Lidge deal last year. Something like Lee for Geoff Jenkins and Adam Eaton would be good.
