Posted Friday May 01, 2009, About: Which conference plays weakest schedule?
Economics are a big part of the OOC scheduling as well. Smaller schools are less likely to demand a home and away game- they're willing to take a fairly fat paycheck for coming into someone's stadium for a whipping. And who knows? They might win one occassionally and make the highlight reels (App. State).

But larger, nationally known schools are not going to travel to your turf for less than a hefty cut of the ticket sales. Or at least not without a home and away agreement that still allows them to get theirs. In big programs- Texas, Florida, Ohio St., etc... they will sell out every home game regardless of who they play.

If you're AD, which makes more sense? Playing the Rural University Minnows and keeping 85% of the profit on ticket sales with a likely win to keep NC hopes alive and giving your team a live scrimmage, or- setting up a home and away with a major school that is going to be a major headache in negotiations, will tie up a game and force travel in the next year or two, and could possibly cost you a shot at a national championship? It was 01 or 02 that UGA went 13-1 and didn't get a shot at a NC...two other teams were undefeated. Sometimes it's luck and timing as well as skill- and why tempt fate? I mean UGA, despite their egg-laying prowess, did have the past two most recent national champions on their in-conference schedule last year. Do they really need to schedule a top tier team for their OCC?
Posted Tuesday January 08, 2008, About: '50-50' chance for playoff system
There was one other article with a college president comment. The president of Ohio State said you would have to pry a playoff from his cold dead fingers. More conferences are getting onboard with the playoff idea, including the ACC (finally). The two major conferences that are holding it up are the PAC-10 and Big-10. I'm not sure what their reasons are. And by the way, the UGA president in the article said he believes it has a 50-50 shot. It does have a majority of conferences support, but since it needs the support of ALL the conferences he is referring to a 50-50 shot of convincing those spineless hold-outs. (spineless referring to the individuals, not the conference, players, or fans)
Posted Tuesday January 08, 2008, About: NCAA's hottest recruiting school
Georgia is a consistently good team. They haven't won a NC recently even with good recruits. In the past, coaching was an issue. Now the coaching is more solid, but sometimes in the BCS you need a little luck to help get you to a NC game. There was a 12-1 Georgia team in 2002. That record would have put them in the NC game this year. This year a 2 loss SEC team won the NC. Georgia was a 2 loss SEC team and didn't get to play. Not arguing that they should have, that's a moot point, but consistently finishing in or around the top 10 can be more difficult and more impressive objectively than having a great 2 or 3 year run like some teams and then fall out of the picture. If we keep getting good recruits and our coaching stays strong, it's only a matter of time before the Bulldogs will get the chance to show they are a Champion.
