AxelMumford, the players come and go. The team is what stays and the owners give you that team. They also provide you with every single thing that happens off the ice, and between periods. Entertainment, the game experience, concessions, merchandise. On top of that, they're the ones paying staff to give all that to you.
As for the ridiculous contracts, not every owner is offering those. It's a small contingent of owners that screw everyone else over. The new CBA is a chance for correcting what's wrong. Those contracts are one thing that is very wrong with the NHL. In order for the correction to take place it has to be on paper otherwise it's considered collusion, but the players don't want that correction.
For the players to fight for contracts over 5 years when very few of them even get contracts of 5 years or more is pathetic. They've thrown the 3rd and 4th liners under the bus, stolen their paychecks and cost the fans another month of hockey simply to protect the multi-millionaires.
