Back when Brenda Lee was a rock star.

Didn't mean that specifically at the OP. I was just thinking of coining a phrase...a couple of keys short of a QWERTY?

Yeah, I didn't get that either.

Those Raider boys were quite a bunch.

Ken Anderson. Hmmmm. I have this totally irrational loathing for him. Probably displaced hatred of Bob Trumpy and Collinsworth. Anderson is a really big fan of himself, and like Phil Simms, he's pissed. Unlike Simms, though, Anderson might have a point.

Yes he did, and in so many other ways as well.

I think Stabler was a better quarterback and that it's a travesty that he's not in the Hall. And believe me, I hated those Raider teams.

I see him as one of the greatest in spite of his stats, as incongruous as that sounds.

But we're not talking media here. We're talking about boyhood idols in hard core football country, Sure, I understand the local boy angle. He was a legend in high school. he had style. He had women. But remember, that cut both ways. Many parents in those days didn't like him for exactly those reasons, and that would normally affect the opinions of young boys.

Me, I wanted to be Joe Gilliam. The closest I got was doing coke in college.

I get your point, but I strongly disagree. BTW, his career QB rating is 65.5.

When I was growing up, guys would pretend to be, say, Willie Stargell or Roberto Clemente when we played baseball. If you ran with a football, you wanted to be like OJ. And when you played QB, you wanted to be either Johnny U or Joe Willie. Pretty good barometer of Namath's overall influence there, considering this was in Pittsburgh in the 70s.

So what? You claim to have seen him play, so that makes you of a certain age. You should know that he played on mostly bad teams and on mostly terrible knees. He also played in an era when a completion percentage over 50 was pretty good. Unitas stands at 54.6%, piss poor by today's standards. Sammy Baugh had 187 TDs against 203 picks. So what?

This could apply figuratively as well.

Fair enough. I missed that part. My fault. I agree that he isn't top 10.

Bwahahaha OK, whatever blows your dress up. Have a nice day.

I feel so badly for little Jimmy Harbaugh.

Never saw Namath play, either, huh?

Never saw Tarkenton play, huh?

Great thread, (UN), and very good points. I've long thought that the greatest NFL QB discussion could just as easily be the greatest NFL QB to come out of Western Pennsylvania. For anyone who hasn't seen the 1958 Championship Game, check it out some time. It's amazing. It's like Unitas is running some sort of proto West Coast attack, and making it up on the fly. Amazing stuff.

It seems like everyone who saw Unitas play who still watches football compares every other QB to him. Pretty strong argument there for greatest.

Yeah, because you're such a wordsmith and grammarian, right? Don't fret. Lots of people like you can't grasp more difficult concepts like irony and high school English.
