Until he gets ripped apart by some 240lb defensive player that takes advantage of the horrible Brown's o-line. It is hard to get attendance ratings with a QB on the sideline with a season ending injury.
The Browns have a long track record of being QB killers, they need to build an offensive line first, and then work on the QB issue.
Frye might have sucked, but all those sacks were not his fault alone.
biggestpatsfan | 09/12/07
Would you say the same about players that were the first to get caught using the newest strength enhancing drugs? Hey, they were they are not the only ones doing this, just the first to get caught. Does that make it okay? Ummm.. nope.
"you newbs think the patriots are the only ones doing this kind of thing?"
sekhui | 09/12/07
Never said that. What makes someone who argues that the Pats should be penalized for a clear rule violation a "newb" just because they were the first ones to get caught? I grew up playing football, I have been watching football as a fan for over 20 years, that hardly makes me a "newb".
Considering the relative time line of the internet as opposed to most mediums, and the term "newb" you use, it makes me wonder how much of a "newb" you are. After all that is a term most common in the last 7 years or so and mostly used among teenagers and those in their early twenties. Many of us have been following football for a quarter of a century or more. So, who is the newb?
Your user name negates pretty much everything you have attempted to argue in this thread. Bias is an interesting thing, it allows one to circumvent the facts and rules in their own mind order to justify obvious flaws and in this case a clear violation of NFL rules.
Maybe the Pats will win it all this year, heaven knows they are loaded as a team and have a great chance. However, the fact that they seemingly violated NFL rules does not go away just because you are a fan of the Patriots.
BLUESILVER | 09/12/07
If you read my post correctly, I never said the Pats cheated against the Chargers. I simply brought to question a hypothetical situation whether they might of had someone in the stands during the Chargers' most refcent game, 2007, against the Bears, taping signals for future reference. One never knows. Also, I am not sure if it is a rule violation to have someone in the stands doing such things.
There is one thing that is clear in this entire argument. Having an employee video taping the opposing team's sideline and signal calling is a violation of NFL rule. If a team gets caught doing that, they are cheating.

Unless he knew the defensive coverage before the plays started. HAHA, just kidding, Moss looked good in that game, and that long TD he blew past an entire team of defenders and caught the ball in triple coverage, so you can't blame stolen signals on that one.

It is still a clear violation of NFL rules. If a team just violates the salary cap to get under other teams skin does that mean it should be excused. If a team clearly violates rules on placing players on the injury list to mess with another team's head does that make it right? No, there are rules in place for a reason, to maintain the integrity of the game. If a team breaks those rules, even just as a psychological tactic as you suggest, they should be penalized.
Breaking the rules = cheating, even if you think they broke the rules to get under someone's skin.
If you got caught doing 90 MPH in a 55 MPH zone and you told the officer that you had a different interpretation of the rules, or you were just doing it to mess with them, you would still have to pay the fine.

This seems to be a problem in the NFL as a whole. There are a number of star players that have no class as well. Thank goodness Goddell is weeding them out one by one.
While I agree that Belichick is a good coach, he does have no class. He has forgotten, and or never been in touch with the aspect of good sportsmanship. Just look at the way he treated Mangini after the game last year, and the way he shrugged off Payton after the Colts beat them in the playoffs.
What happened to sportsmanship over the years? Their was a time when players and teams respected their opponents and opposing coaches no matter the outcome or odds. My grandfather was a football coach and while I was a kid he always told me to respect the game and my opponents no matter the outcome. Belichick seems to have forgotten that this is a game, and to earn long lasting respect, you have to give respect to the game as well.

Umm.. where have you been? Frye got traded the other day to Seattle. Maybe you mean Anderson?
My guess is that all future Pat's opponents have changed their signals dramatically for just that reason. Give a radio to the defensive captain and this problem is solved anyway.

If they stick with Lorenzen for a few games while Eli is out the o-line will adapt to a new left handed scheme, then have to switch back in a few weeks when Eli comes back.

A team needs to know who their leader is on offense. The Browns have been horrible over the last several years making that decision. Pick someone and stick with them for the season. Give your team some direction and something to work with, man up and stand by your choice. Granted, things may go horribly in the first game, but playing the QB of the moment game can't bring a team togeather on offense.

I don't see other teams being caught with a tape of the opposing team's defensive signals. The rule and subsequent 2006 memo from NFL head of football operations seems pretty clear to me, "Video taping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent's offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches' booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."
Put your fan status aside and look at the facts in the issue.
BLUESILVER | 09/12/07
How clear is this:
"1. Page 105 of the Game Operations manual says: "No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches' booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game." It later says: "All video shooting locations must be enclosed on all sides with a roof overhead."
2. And, a memo from Ray Anderson, NFL head of football operations, to head coaches and GMs on Sept. 6, 2006 said: "Video taping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent???s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines, in the coaches??? booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game."

Side story in the article.
I am no genius, but I can understand that rule and subsequent memo fairly easily. Don't film the opposing team's sidelines, coaches, or signals. If you are caught doing so, you are breaking a rule.
Stybun | 09/12/07
That cracked me up. Not a jab at you, it was a funny comment.
"If Belichick is not suspended for at 4 games then all the people defending Pacman and Chris Henry have a real f'n beef.
If this does not violate the conduct policy what in the hell does? Is this what the NFL want? you can cheat during a game and nothing happens, but if you get a DUI you are suspended."
terpsinatlanta | 09/12/07
Toss in that assistant coach for the Cowboys that got suspended for 5 games for using HGH. Please tell me how a coach using HGH will enhance the team's performance. None the less he broke the rules, he got suspended.
A loss of draft picks will only hurt the Pats next year. A few games with Belichick watching it on T.V. will make a statement and humiliate him, maybe knock down his ego a bit as well, and of course send a message to other coaches that might be using or consider using similar tactics.

If found guilty of this violation, in my mind the team is cheating, even if the alleged activity didn't really help them. I truly feel that the Jets would have lost either way. However, this is about breaking NFL rules, not who would have won. There are penalties for breaking the salary cap as well. When a team does that, you could say, well the team they beat would have lost anyway. That is beside the point, rules are in place for a reason. Break the rules, pay the price.
norcalsurfer777 | 09/12/07
Nope, I almost never read his articles. His style or reporting is just not my cup of tea.
Also, if this sort of thing is going on, what is to say an offending team doesn't have someone in the stands filming the signals of their upcoming opponents? That would give them plenty of time to have a nice chart for next weeks game.
This could be easily solved by letting a defensive player have a radio.
