Howard is a clubhouse cancer. I was reading today that he'd be interested in playing for the Rockets or Mavericks. If they're smart, the team GMs and Coaches should be running in the opposite direction.
It would be nice if the Dodgers had an "Opt Out" clause, but teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies and Red Sox are not as smart as the Agents and Player Unions, and they continue to get stuck with mammoth contracts for mediocre players. Hamilton is, in my opinion, a safer choice than Greinke. Hamilton only lapses occasionally. Greinke experiences total meltdowns.
Napoli hit .227 last year and can't play First Base. Mauro Gomez hit .275, James Loney hit .249, and both are defensively better than Napoli. Even Salty hit .239, had more homers than Napoli, is 4 years younger, and could learn to play First Base better than Napoli in a month. This trade is nuts.
.227 BA, and not a good 1st baseman. James Loney hit .249 this year. Mauro Gomez, in a short stint with the Red Sox, hit .275. Both are 3 years younger than Napoli, who hits with power, but brings nothing else to the table. Sox would be nuts to sign this guy.
The real question is why would the Red Sox want Ferrell? He was a lousy Pitching Coach when he was in Boston, and he's been a lousy Manager since he went to Toronto. Just because he might be better than Bobby V (who wouldn't be?) doesn't mean that the Sox should hire him! To answer the question asked, though, my answer would be that I wouldn't tender an offer. Come on, Red Sox Fans. Despite the 2012 debacle, you can aspire to someone better than John Ferrell!
If they need a new Manager (The obviously do), Brad Mills, who the Astros fired recently, would be a better choice. Ferrell was a terrible Pitching Coach in Boston, and he's showing every sign of duplicating this lack of success as a manager in Toronto.
This is the stupidest speculation of the day...by a mile! Why would they, after dumping $262M of salary a few days ago, waste $135m of it on an often injured, prematurely old Catcher who doesn't want to catch? It must be a slow news day.
Fine. Since he's currently under contract, tell him that he's suspended without pay until he realizes that playing a game for a living isn't the hardest job in the world. Of course, he'll milk his current injury, and the Players Association will support him, so my suggestions probably would only work in an ideal environment. Has anyone noticed that the Magic team has been playing pretty well without him? Time to cut your losses. Hang a "For Sale" sign around his neck, and make him available to the highest bidder. If the highest bidder is some podunk, loser team, and Dwight doesn't want to go there, tell him "tough"!
Why do people assume that Darvish is the 2nd coming of Dice-K regarding his English language facility? My understanding is that he spent an extensive period of time living in Western massachusetts, and even attended school there.
