I think they knew his talent was declining, particularly his ability play the body in the defensive zone, and weren't going to pay colossal money for an above-average skater when they have young talent galore.
Why Anaheim would pay that kind of money for a stats player is beyond me, but their GM is off his rocker... so it doesn't shock me.
So what do they do? They trade him for two players who they must sign (which negates the point of freeing up cap room) and trade away a bunch of future picks for exclusive negotiation access to free agents. How they can possibly financially survive signing Vinny and Boyle, while also hoping to sign even one or two more free agents is beyond me.
I have never liked Feaster, and this mess is exactly the kind of thing that can destroy the credibility of an organization that so recently held a Cup. They should have kept Torts and canned Feaster... I'm tellin' ya. Melrose is going to learn quickly that the game changes pretty fast in a decade.
If you want a nice guy, look for a priest... this guy is a really good coach. Congrats to whoever picks him up.
Frankly, I like John and hope he does hook up with Ottawa. Back East is where he belongs anyway, he's no Floridian!
I hate reporters who pull crap like this, undoubtedly to try to create news where none exists.
The replay judge had no choice but to uphold the incorrect call, as much as I hate saying it and as little as I like the Flyers. You can't change the rules while looking at a replay, so it had to be upheld.
Fact is... that WAS a goal and we all know it. In fact, by taking computerized measurements you could prove it.
Not only does it show horrible sportsmanship, but not much class either. He's just lucky he didn't break a nose, knock out a couple teeth, or catch Ribeiro's eye... if he had, the Wings would be playing Hasek and lose serious momentum. If I were his coach, at any other level, I'd bench him.
It's easy to minimize this incident, since nobody was hurt, but punitive sanctions are meant to teach a lesson and prevent incidents in the future. If you only take serious action when someone is hurt or put out of the lineup, what kind of message does that send to young players?
This is a perfect distraction for Dallas and one the Wings cannot afford. All Osgood did was motivate a potentially nasty team and make things more difficult for his team.
The butt end of a stick to the face could easily take out an eye as easily as a two-handed slash could break a clavicle or strike the side of the neck. Fortunately, neither was injured... but that's simple luck and should not be the determining factor.
If Campbell were smart, they'd both sit a game and receive a significant fine. It would teach everybody that attacking a player with a stick is a no-no, even in the playoffs... especially in the playoffs.
Imagine the impact the permanent loss of either of these players would be to their respective team... which makes them both idiots for risking their teams' playoff chances and more than just a bit selfish for not considering their team first.
Offense is horribly overrated. Give me a group of unselfish, team players over overpriced, selfish prima donnas any day. This guy is a great coach and will be badly missed by MN and by the league, but not by non-fans who care about nothing but scoring.
We get it... this was wrong. Lets stop giving newswriters the incentive to write these stories, eh?
I have no love for either of these organizations, but loathe the thought of the Flyers making the Finals.
