Maybe this isn't national news, but it matters locally. This was the darkest day in TWolves history. Malik Sealy was a key member of that team and a first rate locker room guy. I attended his jersey dedication ceremony, (along with the then banished Joe Smith). It was more profound and moving than *any* basketball game.

Sealy was killed in a head on collision coming home from celebrating KG's birthday. This guy was driving the wrong way down a divided 4 lane highway. It is nearly impossible to mistake the particular exit ramp he took for an entrance ramp. He had to be completely blind drunk. It is a wonder he was able to start his car.

Sadly, this happens every day. It just so happened that we paid attention this time because of the fame of the victim. It breaks my heart to see this guy's name in the news again. Luckily no one was killed.

The Nets are losing because they have zero post presence. Kidd is their leading rebounder. That's a problem.

AO--I have to disagree with your read on the Minnesota situation. First, the Wolves got their 2008 1st rounder back from the Celtics, and that should be a very high pick. Gomes and Telfair have been playing significant minutes, and so was Ratliff before he got hurt.

Like most people in MN I am just sick about the loss of KG. Almost as much as 3 losing seasons with KG. It was simply time to blow it up and start over. So, if you're going to join the McHale bashing parade, then at least bash him for the right reasons....Joe Smith contract, fractured locker room, and failing to get the right talent around KG.

Did you all miss Team USA this summer? Any team that wants to win now will benefit from having Kidd as their floor leader. Look how much Phx improved with the addition of Nash, who many considered to be too old to take a risk on.

Kidd is the best distributor in the game. He never played a real athletic game; his game is based on superior court vision and excellent timing. Age hasn't taken either one away from him. He's worth far more than spare parts.
Posted Monday December 03, 2007, About: Rumor: Bulls had no shot at KG
Yep Manute, in retrospect the Deng, Chandler, #2 pick probably was the best offer. But it was made a year too early, when KG wasn't being shopped. By the time he was on the block Chi didn't have the right pieces . I like Deng, but would rather have Al. Phx was intrigued but couldn't make the numbers work and withdrew from the bidding.

Also, since Boston held the Wolves 1st round pick from the Ricky Davis trade, the only way to get it back was to deal with Boston. We'll have to see who that pick turns out to be before we can fully judge the quality of this trade.

Liontut, since we are agreed that getting equal value in trade is not a real possibility, would you mind naming another, better package offerred for Garnett?

As far as McHale's ability to draft, we've been down that road before. It is difficult to name good picks because they lost them in the Joe Smith fiasco. BTW, McHale never drafted Marbury. He drafted Ray Allen and traded for Marbury. He drafted Roy, but traded him for Foye. McHale drafts OK, but his trades can be suspect.
Posted Monday December 03, 2007, About: Rumor: Bulls had no shot at KG
Well coming from you liontut that is saying a lot. I don't think that trading a player of Garnett's caliber will ever yield equal value. Nobody in the history of the league has ever been traded for more players, and you're saying he could have done better? One lottery pick, a huge expiring contract and a young 20-10 guy isn't equal value, but it was more than anyone else was offering.

You know why I think stockpiling picks is a good idea for a team trying to rebuild? Conventional wisdom. Teams outside of NY and LA can't usually afford to try and buy an instant contender, but rather have to build through the draft and hope to attract a free agent or two.

And McHale will not be fired. Hoiberg is being groomed to take his position, and when he is ready to take over McHale will resign.
Posted Monday December 03, 2007, About: Rumor: Bulls had no shot at KG
Could have gotten more for Garnett? Sure if you only list the 5 players they received. But they forgot to mention the 2 #1 draft picks, one of whom should be very high. That means McHale received 7 players for KG, the most in NBA history. Coupled with the cap relief they get with Ratliff's expiring contract, it makes the trade a good commencement to a rebuilding process.

Chicago was dangling Gordon, Deng & Noccioni. All nice pieces, but not the kind to kick off a rebuiding effort. I think McHale took the best offer. Cronyism has nothing to do with it.

I may be giving Ainge too much credit, but I think he sent Blount, Banks and Ricky to MN as a poison pill strategy to ruin the Wolves team chemistry so he could swoop in and pluck Garnett from the ashes.

Nah....certainly not prototypical.....just goofing. It's better to have your 4s and 5s shooting mid-range shots than 3s because it creates better spacing on the floor and they're in a better position to rebound.

Unless they're Antoine Walker :>) He shot the lights out the other night against Sac.

Regarding the wisdom of Se7en Nation Army:

"Most NBA players are scum"
Wow. Do you know a single NBA player personally? How do you feel about racehorses? Or actors? Players are in the league by virtue of talent, and in most cases dedication and hard work. That usually builds character. Unfortunately a handful of exceptions cloud our perception of NBA players in general.

"Money has ruined the league"
Money is a good "problem" for any league to have. The league exists to make money. The NBA is in the entertainment industry. The average consumer spends more money on entertainment than they did 20 years ago. The NBA has been shrewdly marketed in a growth sector, hence revenue increases. I would like to see players enjoy that revenue as much as owners. The money is there, because *we* pay to be entertained.

I don't hear anyone complain about how much Seinfeld or Matt Lauer makes, because NBC doesn't disclose contract details to the media. This only happens in pro sports. Management uses this brand of misguided public outrage to keep salaries down.

Yea texasmade I always liked that rivalry. KG trash talking and glaring at Duncan all night. Duncan calmly going about his business and coyly smiling en route to victory. Good stuff. They usually neutralized each other and the Spurs usually won.

I remember one of KG's consecutive game double digit scoring streaks ending in San Antonio when KG got tossed in the early minutes for jawing at Duncan. Sad at the time but funny now.

ECJ-I saw that game too (from a much greater distance). It looked to me like an old-fashioned butt kicking. And I've never seen KG burn out. Ever. I'm rooting for him man.

Call me crazy, but I think ATL is sneaking into the playoffs this year. I'm disappointed in you though. I expected you to say that Atlanta got whipped by Washington who got whipped by Boston so comparing opponents like that is a worthless exercise. You got me there :>)

Boston also easily beat Atlanta, who beat both Phoenix and Dallas.

East Coast J---Then it's going to take a long time to evaluate how good the Celtics are. They don't play either the Suns or Spurs until February.

They manhandled Denver who at 6-3 currently has one of the better records in the West. I'm not saying Denver is the Spurs or Suns, but it's all we have to go on right now. Aside from Washington (just off to a slow start?) the rest of their competition has been teams around .500, so you can't say Boston is exactly bottom feeding. They're pretty damn good.

You know your team is good when your stars are on the bench joking and laughing during the last minute or two of a ballgame.

durrell,
Far be it from me to determine what is OK and what is not.

Zwitek, you're hilarious! A minor nitpick with your use of "euphemism" which implies a sugar-coat and is the opposite of the point you were trying to make. But point taken.

My problem with the frequent idiot, retard etal. diatribes that you see on these boards? #1) People aren't stupid, they just act that way sometimes #2) It's too easy. Oftentimes when I find myself thinking that someone is being particularly thick I discover that I didn't see the whole picture. Once I do their actions seem perfectly rational. #3) It is close-minded and hampers further discussion. There is no easier way to convince yourself that you're right about something than to tell yourself that those who disagree are stupid.

Durrell, you might want to turn off Fox News for a second and pay attention. The mainstream media?? Their objective is to sell product and advertisements, not to ruin people. People like Steph and Isiah (and Britney) ruin themselves; the media just reports it. The juicier the story the more they sell. No vendetta....no conspiracy.....just business.

You're right though...attacking a guys' intelligence is usually out of bounds. But man....you have to question his *judgement*, and that speaks to his intelligence.
Posted Thursday October 25, 2007, About: Why Heat made Walker go away
McHale is not going to be fired. After this fire sale is over he will resign and go fishing knowing that the next GM will have draft picks, few bad long term contracts and a roster filled with young talent. Maybe the reins will be passed to Fred Hoiberg or maybe they will hire an experienced GM, but McHale will retire sometime after the trading deadline.

The Wolves will be atrocious this year, but what would really sabotage the rebuilding effort is having the young guys pick up bad habits and bad attitudes from the likes of Ricky and Blount. I love what Ricky brings to the game, and I think he'll help Miami, but I don't want him poisoning the well.
Posted Wednesday October 17, 2007, About: Garnett's cursing irks Allen
booradical is right. Consider the source. I wouldn't call it sour grapes though...rationalization maybe.

With KG you have to take the whole package. He's not eff-en-heimering all the time off the court. Even his own mother has accepted that swearing is just another thing KG does well on the court.

C'mon Ray. He's not the first guy you've heard swear on the court, and this is nothing new. Read Miles Davis' autobiography sometime.
Posted Tuesday October 02, 2007, About: East stars skeptical of Celtics scorers
Fair enough Drastik....but you are back pedaling a little bit. You said "neutralize" and I think that is what everybody was reacting to. Sure, Tyrus will frustrate Garnett from time to time as a defender, and probably more so as he matures. But when I think "neutralize" I think either someone who is an even match on both ends of the court (like a Duncan), or someone who can shut them down defensively. Ty Thomas does not fit either mold. He doesn't have the polish offensively and KG is too versatile offensively to shut down. As proof of this look at his streaks for consequetive games of double digit scoring.

ECJ

I dare say I have seen a lot more of KG than you have. If he has problems walking it doesn't seem to interfere with his running and it sure doesn't show on the court. He has never had surgery and the only time he has missed any action is when the TWolves were throwing games to save their lottery protected pick from going to the Clips.

Shaq Duncan and Wade aren't "go to" guys? Did Miami have a great system in place or did they design one around Shaq and Wade?

Whatever kind of system Boston puts into place is going to look a lot better with Allen & KG on the floor.
