Of course Kiffin wants USC! Luke wants to take on Vader, Buzz Lightyear has to take on Zurg, Oedipus has to kill his father (I'll end this analogy there), and my son still wants to arm wrestle with me despite the fact that he knows he'll lose. (He's 12. I figure I got around four or five more years....)

Hopefully, we'll see more Kiffins and Carrolls and that guy from Fresno State and Mendenhalls and even Willinghams, who schedule tough teams; and fewer Leaches and the like, scheduling creampuffs (see Easterbrook's Tuesday Morning Quarterback this week on espn.com's page two) and limiting away games. You can't improve unless you go against someone good! Let's hear it for people whose self-respect is more important than the number of Ws!

As a Mariners fan, I hope he does NOT retire, that he comes back for another year. Sure, his bat is almost a liability (I say "almost" because with the Mariners' offense, anything helps), but his clubhouse and stadium presence is a huge help. He keeps things loose and positive (and our other superstar doesn't really have a personality to speak of); when you haven't got the talent--and we don't--you need something psychological. Griffey is it. We didn't improve this year only because the pitching is better. We also improved because the clubhouse was a better place to be.

The only reason we're above .500 is the pitching (including Washburn--tracejuno, what are you smoking); we've got the worst offense in baseball. If you pin me down and insist I answer, "Do you think the Ms can win the division," I say no, but let's try, dammit!

Compare Mustain with his high school receiver buddy Williams, who also left Arkansas and is working out great for the Trojans. (I think he led the team in receiving....) The difference might be this: maybe Williams did his homework (his football homework!) and knew the Trojans needed receivers, where Mustain was relying on his own hype. I'm speculating, of course, but everyone who goes to USC has to know the competition is tough. But heck, why not give Mustain the benefit of a doubt: maybe he knows that even backup USC quarterbacks have decent careers ahead of them in the NFL. Even if you don't get the break Cassel did, life could be a lot worse.

And you guys who want to toss Silva under the train...your alternative is? I'm not saying he was a good sign (he obviously wasn't), I'm not saying he'll improve; but I don't see that the Ms have something they can put up there every fifth day. Jakubauskas is already questionable. And even if there were some pitching available out there, it's not like we have any offense to trade. What's the alternative? Seems to me the only solution is the same thing we've needed for the past few years: hits.

For us Mariners fans, Ichiro's been the only reason to watch a game for the last two or three years. (OK--Hernandez too.) He's an artist. Watching him do what he does has been one of the few pleasures in NW baseball lately. No, he doesn't do certain things...but if you complain about that, you probably also complain about Reggie Jackson striking out a lot or talking too much--in other words, you complain about every baseball player who doesn't fit your image of what he should be. I'm not saying you should like Ichiro's personality--frankly, there doesn't seem to be much personality there to like (at least he doesn't show any most of the time). He's a baseball player, and watching him do what he does is a pleasure.

(And now we get to watch Griffey again also, so add that to our reasons to go to the park or to watch. Except that with Ichiro, we can count on 150+ games....)

He'll get my cheeks in a seat. I won't be crossing any mountains, but I will be rollin on up I-5. I too used to walk into that big room where he played and watch that swing. OK...so out of the 5 or so games I go to, Seattle will win two...if I'm lucky. At least I get to watch two true, clean professionals--Griffey and Ichiro.

You're right that calling that defense "inexperienced" was inaccurate. But c'mon Sandy... if you're going to start playing the "what if" game, then be prepared for it to be used against you too. Take away, for example, one Aaron Rodgers incompletion near the end of the Cal game, and SC doesn't even win the Pac-10 that year. "What ifs" are not reality.

TexHorn, it's always pleasant to read a fan of a team who doesn't need to denigrate everyone else's team's players. It's also nice to read an opinion that looks at facts instead of passion, and here you are predicting against your Horns. I'll reciprocate: with my team's defense (USC) getting decimated by graduation this year, what makes you think that a Sanchez-led USC is better than Texas? Shouldn't your defense be pretty good next year, and isn't most of your already-good offense staying? (And by the way: wishful thinking on your Cowboys, it seems to me. They're the Yankees of football: spend their way into contention--but not championship--with personnel decisions based on star power instead of team chemistry.)

I hope so...but this is reminding me a lot of 2005-06: our offense was experienced, the defense inexperienced. And that defense got torched by VY (a quarterback who could run and pass, a la Tebow), and the offense kept up...almost. (Half a yard more on that LenDale White carry....) Anyway, I'm worried about the defense. The O line will have a year more of experience, but so will people like Quizz Rodgers and Jeremiah Masoli....I'm worried about the defense. So when I saw the headline re Mays, I pumped my fist. That helps.

Hey fellow Trojan fans...I think I'd rather have us with Mays and not Sanchez than the other way around. The defense is the side that's losing practically everyone: it needs Mays more than the offense needs Sanchez. That said, of course I like our chances even more with Sanchez coming back too. I hope Sanchez sees Mays coming back and says, "You know...our chances at a NC just got a little better...."

Wow. This writer really doesn't get it. Carroll knows that the whole sports media is focused on SC's one loss this year, rather than on the wins. Everything Carroll gets is "why aren't you in the national championship," not "why are you so good for so long." Paterno gets the same. A few years ago everyone was calling for him to go away, for heaven's sakes, despite this magnificent record over the years. I wouldn't be surprised if this writer was one of those calling for people to resign...and now he takes the long view.

I also am glad to see him go, for the same reason; maybe the Trojans will now show some creativity on offense. But I disagree that one who plays not to lose is good anywhere. It's especially bad, it seems to me, at a place where things need to get turned around, because there's no spark, no motivation, no "dangit maybe we didn't get that 4th and 2 but coach is challenging us" attitude. Plus, when you have someone like Locker, you need someone like Chow to teach him what to do AND to come up with plays that use his skills.

I don't know: maybe Sark drew up some plays on the cocktail napkin while he and the AD were sipping brandy and talking about winning a couple of games in 2009. Maybe Sark's head cleared once he got out of the smog in LA and into the clean air of the Pacific NW. And maybe I go back to my Adriana Lima fantasy.

This USC fan agrees with the UCLA fan. Except for this: Maybe Sark will hire a decent offensive coordinator, someone who knows how to play call, and maybe Sark will give the offensive reins to that person, sublimating his own ego for the good of the team. And maybe Adriana Lima will show up at my door in red lingerie.

Actually, take it from this SC fan: I think this would make SC stronger in the coaching ranks. Sark's handling of the offense has been no help to SC. We haven't had creativity and good use of the talent since Chow left. The offense this year has been mediocre despite the great talent.

One of these days we'll get one of your SEC teams and a Pete Carroll team together, and we'll have a football game for the ages. And kudos also to the Sooner fan who respects good USC football. All praise to you bloggers who can root for your team and respect good football! Down with the name callers and thoughtless boosters, even if they're Trojan fans. I'd rather watch a USC-Florida game with KingFootball than with a hell of a lot of Trojan fans I read.

Hey sweetrl...thanks for posting. Even though I root against Notre Dame every chance I get, I'd rather hear on this subject from someone who's sympathetic to ND than from these idiots who think that making fun of Weis' weight counts for cleverness or analysis of football. Go Trojans (as always), and sweetrl, I hope you guys hire someone good--partly so that USC's strength of schedule goes up, partly because, while I'll enjoy today's blowout, some of my fondest memories are those really good SC-ND games.
