Sure, Gaborik is a great player, but we don't need him on the Habs. There's enough scoring and depth that forwards aren't a concern and won't be for many years. Like you said, Kovalev, Koivu, and Lang are getting old, but we'll resign at least the K's for a couple more years until Pacioretty, Maxwell, D'Agostini, Stewart, Trotter, etc... are ready
In fact, if there's any issue at all to be resolved in Mtl it's that we're missing one last top-4 defenceman, though O'Byrne and Gorges may well progress to that role with more time and experience.
All in all, though, Gaborik to Habs is B.S. and won't happen. Gainey is too smart for that.
Compare the contract A. Kostitsyn signed this year (15 mill over the next 3 seasons) to other players around the league and you've got a perfect example. The young stars such as Komisarek love playing in Montreal and they're treated like royalty there. Of course we'll lose a UFA here and there, but generally they'll stick around if we keep winning.
Furthermore, say what you will about Bouillon, Kostopoulos, and Begin, but they won't be missed too much when they leave, and that's thanks to the drafting of the organization. Steve Begin and Dandenault are definitely on the way out in Montreal as we've already got players to replace them, and there's tons of talent down the line to replace Bouillon on defence with McDonagh, Fisher, Valentenko, Carle, Belle, etc... waiting in the wings.
As for Kovy leaving for the KHL... not gonna happen. HIs son is enrolled at school in Montreal and loves it, and Alex loves life in THE hockey city.
So all in all, we're in good shape with or without Sundin
Right because Pleks and A.Kost aren't on the #1 line with Ryder struggling to get in the lineup or anything...
And by the way before someone starts talking about bad 5-on-5 numbers, consider the Habs have been atop the league with Ottawa and Detroit in terms of goals scored. Not too shabby for a team who can't play 5 on 5...
Under the new CBA, teams can no longer eat part of a contract in a trade. Therefore, a team will have to take his full salary. Of course, there is the option of putting him on re-entry wavers, where another team could take him at a reduced salary, but I doubt that Chicago would let him go without getting any return.
