Posted Friday September 25, 2009, About: Yanks, Red Sox may out-bid Twins for Mauer
Mauer would be a great addition to the Yanks, but with CC and Tex and ARod alll under massive contracts, along with some promising catchers in the minors, I bet the Yanks don't make a big play for him. If they do go for something big in free agency it should be pitching.
Posted Friday September 25, 2009, About: David Wells: Yankees doing Joba wrong
We don't know that Joba is even an effective bullpen player. He'd be a 7th inning guy. Hughes has earned that setup role.
Posted Friday September 25, 2009, About: David Wells: Yankees doing Joba wrong
1) Both Felix and Grienke were on strict innings limits their first two years in the bigs

2) Both had considerably longer minor league careers than Joba and thus their arms were used to the workload
Posted Wednesday September 02, 2009, About: Packers reducing Hawk's role
He's a solid but unspectacular LB. I bet the Packers are still happy to have him and just about every other team would want him too. If Barnett is healthy then the Packers have a very good LB corp.
Posted Monday August 24, 2009, About: Pettitte hints at 2010 return
Keeping him would allow Hughes to remain in the pen, perhaps allow him to transition into the closer role in sixteen years when Rivera retires (seriously, is it just me or does Mo get better with age?).
Posted Wednesday July 15, 2009, About: Boozer: Jazz agreed to trade
Any trade involving Boozer would have to be a three way deal involving either OKC or Portland. Utah only deals Boozer if they get cap relief. Just something to keep in mind.
Posted Sunday July 12, 2009, About: Jazz consider Millsap, Boozer options
Are you kidding? I think Portland WANTS to be in the 3 way trade and net Kirk Hinrich, then use the remaining cap room to sign a backup PF like Drew Gooden or Chris Wilcox. I'm sure they'd be more than willing to settle for Millsap though.
Posted Saturday July 11, 2009, About: Jazz consider Millsap, Boozer options
Paul Millsap's contract offer is for about $6.2 million the first and second years and then increases to about $7 million after that for the next two. Really not a bad deal for a high quality backup, not when you consider Brandon Bass had a deal for roughly $4.5 million a year and Millsap is a much better rebounder and defender than Bass.
Posted Saturday July 11, 2009, About: Jazz consider Millsap, Boozer options
I guess option 4 is that Utah lets Millsap go to Portland AND trades Boozer, which is a double win for the Blazer because they both get Millsap and a major divisional foe lose two of it's top three frontcourt players.
Posted Saturday July 11, 2009, About: Jazz consider Millsap, Boozer options
Portland is in a relative no-lose situation here:

1) Plain and simple, Utah doesn't match and the Blazers get Millsap, who is both a very high quality backup PF and an enticing trade piece should they want to look that way

2) The offer sheet forces Utah to trade Boozer in order to match Millsap. This breaks down in to two distinct possibilities. Since Utah needs to create immediate cap room they need to send out considerably more money than they take back. Thus they must have a deal that involves a team with considerable ($6+ million) cap space. I believe that only includes Portland and OKC at this point. So either A) Utah pulls a trade that gives Portland a piece they want or B) Utah pulls a trade with OKC that eats up OKC's cap space and leaves the Blazers as the only team with considerable cap room until the 2010 free agent season. This would make Portland the only team involved in lopsided deals up to the 2010 trade deadline and also in the gap between the conclusion of the 2010 Finals and the 2010 free agency period.

3) Utah decides to keep both Boozer and Millsap in what would turn out to be a financial b*tch slap (including taxes and bonuses, matching Millsap means Utah pays an additional $21 million this year), and Portland is no worse off than they were a week ago.

I'm very interested to see what Utah decides to do. As the saying goes, the ball is in their court.
Posted Monday July 06, 2009, About: Blazers weigh Lee, Odom, Miller
Odom would be the #3 option, maybe the 6th man. Have you heard of Brandon Roy? He's pretty good at basketball. In fact, Odom's offense wouldn't be his greatest asset to Portland, it would be his rebounding and length.

My personal opinion is Portland should look at Shawn Marion, but I doubt that happens.

CC's fat. So was Babe Ruth.
Posted Wednesday June 03, 2009, About: Ortiz riding Red Sox pine for good?
Oh c'mon people. His longtime buddy Manny gets busted with PEDs, it's pretty clear that he had been taking them too and hit the wall that all former steroid users did (McGwire, Sosa, Clemens, etc.). Need more evidence? How's about how when he first teamed up with the Sox he had hit 20 homers with the Twins the year before and then 31, then 41 with his slugging % increasing by more than .1. He's just too likeable and so nobody wants him to be a user, so nobody has accused him.
Posted Tuesday May 26, 2009, About: Hughes refuses to shake Girardi's hand
I was stunned to see Hughes pulled. He was showing no sign of fatigue. What's 15 more pitches? He deserved at least a CHANCE. Especially considering the Yank's bullpen is tired. I am so sick of pitchers being babied. Nolan Ryan went over 200 pitches in a few of his complete games. Didn't seem to damage his longevity. DESTROY THE PITCH COUNTER!!!
Posted Thursday May 21, 2009, About: Yankees-O's feud brewing?
It's not a rivalry if only one team wins every time.
Posted Friday May 15, 2009, About: T-Wolves keeping McHale?
McHale is a pretty good coach. I think he'd do fine on the bench in Minnesota. But he can't save them, they first need a lot more pieces.
Posted Thursday May 14, 2009, About: Barkley: Kidd at end of the road
Let me put it this way: as a Blazer fan I'd gladly take him on my team. He can still be a major contributor, just not the #1 player on the team anymore.
Posted Friday May 01, 2009, About: Blazers looking to trade?
Even the Blazers management said their championship window doesn't open for another 2-3 seasons realistically. I'd be shocked if Sergio and Frye were Blazers next year, but wouldn't part with Outlaw for anything less than a potential All-Star. This team garnered some experience this year. Next year I say 55 or so wins and losing in the Western Conference semis.

I don't know, it's hard to eat a championship.
Posted Wednesday April 01, 2009, About: Shaq calls out Robin Lopez
Shaq wasn't the best teammate, but it's hard to argue with results. 4 titles, the most dominant four year stretch we've seen since Wilt the longevity for such a huge man, etc. I'm a Portland fan and therefore hate him, but there is no questioning his place in history.
Posted Wednesday April 01, 2009, About: Iverson already tired of bench role
Well, that didn't take long. Always the team player, Iverson is.
