Group E: Fiorentina and Lyon advance, Liverpool is in the Europa League, Debrecen is out. Only thing still up for grabs is top of the group. Fiorentina beat Liverpool or Lyon fail to beat Debrecen, Fiorentina stay top. Lyon beats Debrecen and Fiorentina loses to Liverpool, Lyon go top. Fiorentina draw with Liverpool and Lyon beat Debrecen by two or more goals, Lyon go top. Fiorentina draw with Liverpool and Lyon beat Debrecen by one goal, Fiorentina stay top.
Group F: Barca will qualify automatically with a draw or win or a draw in the Inter/Kazan game. Kiev qualifies automatically with a three goal win or a win and a draw in the Inter/Kazan game. Inter and Kazan will qualify automatically with a win. If Barca wins or draws and Inter and Kazan draw 0-0 or 1-1, Inter qualify. If they draw 2-2 or higher, Kazan qualifies.
Group G: Sevilla has qualified and will secure top spot with a draw. Unirea needs a win or a draw at Stuttgart to qualify. Stuttgart needs a win to qualify. Rangers is out of Europe.
Group F: Arsenal has qualified and is guaranteed top spot. Olympiacos need a win or a draw to qualify. Standard Liege can qualify with an Olympiacos loss and win over AZ Alkmaar.
They have a coach.
They'll have half their team after tomorrow. They'll then make a bunch of signings, maybe including a designated player afterwards. It's worth noting that even with a good chunk of their team already in place, Sounders didn't sign Keller or Ljunberg until November 2008.
Their stadium will finish being built a few games into the season. They've already sold close to 12,000 season tickets (More than the 76ers have sold for their current season).
They've had successful releases of their name, logo, and jersey. They got their jersey ready to sell by the Christmas season and have already started advertising and promoting themselves on local tv and WIP.
They'll get a shirt sponsor probably a month or two before the season starts when businesses have a better idea what the market will look like for them and what the team will look like.
What more can they do?
I hate FSC. So Anglophilic when it comes to soccer to the point of needlessly downgrading and ignoring everything else.
Fiorentina 2-1 Lyon (Jovetic comes off the bench in the 60th minute to score the winner)
Debrecen 3-3 Liverpool (I know they gave up 9 goals to Fiorentina in their past two games, but the Hungarian side really impressed me)
Barcelona 0 - 2 Inter (No Ibrahimovic or Messi tonight apparently. Eto'o scores both goals for Inter)
I think everyone agrees that Guevara has to be their first pick. But it's not like they're picking against anyone, so it only matters what order they're announced in.
They can pick up Guevara from Toronto, Emilio or Gomez from D.C., Heaps from New England, Hejduk from Columbus. That's the backbone of a pretty solid MLS team, though it would be significantly old. And it really doesn't hurt them to take a chance on someone like Convey.
The most exciting hockey game I ever watched was a playoff game between the Penguins and Flyers that lasted five overtimes. Third longest game of all time. You just held your breath whenever the puck was in either offense zone.
IMG wants to pick winners because that broadens the appeal of soccer in this country and strengthens their reputation abroad if the U.S. can win a few youth tournaments. They don't pick the players with the best potential necessarily. You look at how many other countries have their U-17 players playing professionally, but few of those players go on to be national team players even if they are playing professionally.
We need to get better at coaching the players that are just below national team quality at age 15, 16, 17.
I liked what I saw of Quaranta during the Gold Cup.
Have you ever watched FSC's coverage of Serie A? Don't talk to me about spending money on the product, because they don't. ESPN has better production values for the ESPN360.com games than FSC does for the televised matches.
Oh, and let's not forget all that money FSC has paid to broadcast games in HD.
