I think everyone agrees that Guevara has to be their first pick. But it's not like they're picking against anyone, so it only matters what order they're announced in.
They can pick up Guevara from Toronto, Emilio or Gomez from D.C., Heaps from New England, Hejduk from Columbus. That's the backbone of a pretty solid MLS team, though it would be significantly old. And it really doesn't hurt them to take a chance on someone like Convey.
The most exciting hockey game I ever watched was a playoff game between the Penguins and Flyers that lasted five overtimes. Third longest game of all time. You just held your breath whenever the puck was in either offense zone.
IMG wants to pick winners because that broadens the appeal of soccer in this country and strengthens their reputation abroad if the U.S. can win a few youth tournaments. They don't pick the players with the best potential necessarily. You look at how many other countries have their U-17 players playing professionally, but few of those players go on to be national team players even if they are playing professionally.
We need to get better at coaching the players that are just below national team quality at age 15, 16, 17.
I liked what I saw of Quaranta during the Gold Cup.
Have you ever watched FSC's coverage of Serie A? Don't talk to me about spending money on the product, because they don't. ESPN has better production values for the ESPN360.com games than FSC does for the televised matches.
Oh, and let's not forget all that money FSC has paid to broadcast games in HD.
Americans aren't expected to know what they want to do for the rest of their life at age 17.
I like Spector as a right back, and I don't mind being forced to play Boca at CB in Gooch's absence. I would appreciate if Bornstein, Castillo, or someone else could step up at LB. Maybe moving Cherundolo over there is the answer. I don't mind having Goodson as our reserve CB, but I don't think it's a good sign for us if he is starting by Game 1 in South Africa.
That's a lot of money to potentially lose even if the stadium is free.
And it hurts the league's image when teams go bankrupt or move to new cities.
I'd much rather see someone who in an actual game situation could play there for us see what they could do.
Having said that, these past two games were meaningless. They fell at a really awkward time on the calendar for the U.S. squad, considering the Mexican and MLS seasons. I do think the guys got some good experience having to play tough games in Slovakia and Denmark, but this simply was not our '10 World Cup squad.
