The Pavon signing is just a steal for LA. I think if LA could add a good Defensive Midfielder they will be a very strong team once Albright, Donovan, Beckham, and Pavon are all on the field at the same time. If they can stop leaking goals they might actually be able to make it into the MLS cup.
I think that another New York team will eventually happen. It is too large of a market with a ethically diverse culture not to have another team. Like everyone has been mentioning, they need reliable transportation to increase attendance. But also, NY has only been good for this season. Before that, they were awful. Next season you will see season ticket sales rise and the new stadium will help that too. A crosstown rival (or even one that played in the same stadium) would help bring in fans too. That worked pretty well for LA and Chivas.
What I would love to see is another canadian team in Vancouver, BC. The support TFC has gotten is incredible and I think that that same kind of support could be found in Vancouver. Portland and Seattle are pretty big into soccer, so a Vancouver team would get those fans too.
I think a Las Vegas team would be amazing. Hooking an indoor stadium up to a casino (like has been suggested by caliguri) would definately be interesting.
I actually think LA would be a lot better of with donovan playing an attacking/central mid role and Becks on the wing. So, LA would need a quality forward or two (you are right daveorona, Jaqua is horrible) and strong play from a holding midfielder to link the front and back lines. (I don't think Vagenas can handle that role well enough, go buy Joeseph from NE!).
And I think it might be too late for LA. Unless they start winning games (not tying) now they have no chance and I don't really see that happening with Donovan at Gold Cup (and then at Copa America).
Just because the Brazil second divsion can afford to fly its teams across Brazil doesn't mean MLS can. I am unfamiliar with Brazillian league structure, but isn't the second division also part of the first (and lower divisions). If so, that would allow the second and lower divisions to afford the costs because the first division is likely bringing in the revenue. If not, the Brazilian second division might actually be more popular then MLS and have the revenue to afford it. The MLS has to be fiscally responsible if it wants to survive, remember what happened to the NASL.
And Gooch is only 25. With the right coaching and more experience I have no doubt that he could become a very good CB.
Lets assume MLS is on par with euro 2nd and third division teams like everyone says. So that means that all stars of the English Division One (in mid season form) would beat Chelsea at the beginning of the season. Does anyone really believe that? I don't think so.
I am not saying that MLS is a great league, I just think it is crazy how people drastically underestimate it.
Ok, sorry. Pwn is just so much fun to use. I am done with my ridiculous "pwning" comments. :-)
There, I didn't use owned or dominated, so everyone is happy, right?
PS the US pwns Mexico
:-) Haha, too funny!
