Don't forget Bosh has a player option for 17 million in 2010, and he's the kind of guy who might pick it up even though he could make more money with a new deal just so the team can have more money to sign others.
Posted Thursday October 30, 2008, About: Sources: Yankees will pursue Manny
Right Field?!?! Manny is an excellent hitter but with his defense, you're going to put him in Right Field? Run him out there with Damon in center and it doesn't matter how many home runs he hits if every other team hits 15 fly ball doubles every game. With Jeter at short, Damon and Manny in the field, and who knows who at first this team may well have the worst defense in baseball, to go with their potentially awful bullpen. I bet they could still sign Giambi to play first.

The Raptors have a huge following in Toronto, as well as all of Canada. Bosh has never indicated that he might want to leave. There is nothing for him in Cleveland but LeBron. If you picked a team near his hometown and said he'd want to go there then maybe there is some truth to it, but Cleveland?

Besides which, the Raptors have buckets of money coming in from the Leafs and TFC, as well as the Raptors themselves. They can afford to give him LeBron type money, and they would because they need him. Cleveland can offer him a lot, but they probably have to offer him less than whatever LeBron makes.

Also, the Raptors have a good team. We'll see where they are in 2 years, but they have a solid with the potential for excellent PG in Calderon, and if O'Neal stays healthy Bosh has another legitimate star to play with and the potential to be a top team in the east. Maybe in 2 years they'll suck, and we can talk then, but in 2 years it's possible that Calderon has emerged into one of the top PGs in the league and maybe even Bargnani has become a good player. It's ridiculous to even try and play that situation out yet.

Oh Griff, you giant tool, I could tell it was your article well before I looked, just from the needless attacks at Jays management.

Fair enough. I think it's possible that Tulowitzki misses some credit for his defense simply because people key on his offensive abilities, although I think most players are ranked that way, which is too bad because defense is still very exciting and far less streaky.

you have to have an arm to beat a runner on a jump pass... you have to have range to run down a ball in the bermuda triangle.. you have to have guts to dive headfirst into the stands in the beginning of july when many other shortstops might give up (I'm pretty sure A-Rod would've).. so in answer o the questions I'm being asked, that's what I see, that's what I learn on a day-to-day basis..

LiveFreeOrDieHard | 02/25/08, 10:32 PM

Well I think it's fair to say that you need an arm to throw the ball, but you don't necessarily need a good one to beat a runner if the runner is slow or if the ball is hit hard enough at you. Just like I could run down any ball if it's hit soft enough. And I can think of lots of SS who would dive into the stands in July. The problem is that with Jeter makes a single play everyone remembers it forever. Jeter also makes average plays look incredible.

Despite all that I'll take him on my fantasy team, if he wasn't always taken so high by Yankee fans.

I'd also argue that John McDonald is the best fielding SS in the majors, he lives for defense, but I'll certainly concede that you could make an argument for Tulowitzki.

And am I the only one who sees the irony in the person backing Jeter's defense making an error?
Posted Monday February 25, 2008, About: Studies: Jeter poor defensively
So I guess that tells you that your knowledge is not worth the argument, which makes me right....

What I said about experts wasn't relevant to Jeter. It was relevant to my conversation with someone who relies on what they say.

again, I'm not gonna start knocking you now because I don't wanna continue with this post forever, but stats say so little when it comes to what Derek Jeter does out there on a day-to-day basis. Disagree with me, please, it's what makes these things fun... but I've followed this guy nearly every game for 12 years and there's no calling his defense terrible. Period.

LiveFreeOrDieHard | 02/25/08, 08:10 PM

You tried to insinuate that experts are regularly wrong, but your evidence was based exclusively on predictions, which is irrelevant to your point. We know they're no psychics. Fans of the Yankees think Jeter's defense is great. Fans and scouts from the 29 other teams disagree.

What is it that he does "out there" which stats can't represent, relevant to defense? The fact that he makes it look good is irrelevant, looking good doesn't win baseball games. Stats say that he doesn't play balls that others would, something that from watching him is difficult to ascertain.

if the expert opinion meant anything to an outcome the Patriots would be a perfect team, Michigan would've rolled over Appalachian St. and the Bulls and Heat would be competing for home court in the playoffs.

LiveFreeOrDieHard | 02/25/08, 06:31 PM

There's a huge difference, those were predictions. This is a retrospective. We're not guaranteeing that Jeter's defense will be terrible this year, we're saying that it was last year.

Even as a Red Sox fan, I'm tired of hearing this crap. Keep focusing on finding the cheaters, jeez you've never heard a bad word about the guy leave it be. I'll tell you this, I would trade my marketing degree for his overrated SS Defensive skills, sick bat, and paycheck anyday of the week. Oh and the trim he gets is top shelf, you think Jessica Alba cares about his lateral movement to the left? Give me a break.

Pats4Life | 02/25/08, 10:30 AM

And then I'd trade his defensive skills for John McDonald.... And then I'd trade his offensive skills for A-Rod.... And then I'd trade his looks for Tom Brady...... And then I'd trade his pay-cheque for Bill Gates.... And then I'd trade....

The point is, defending on my team I'd rather John McDonald or Orlando Cabrera, or most other players above him. Because they're better at defense. Right now, not several years ago. People get so defensive as if we're trying to say Jeter is and never was any good at baseball. We're not saying that.

Hank Aaron hit a lot of home runs once upon a time, that doesn't mean I'd want him hitting clean-up on my team today.

Having played minor league ball myself (AA), I can honestly say I would love to have the proposed many failures of Jeter instead of the great many things I was told I did well on the field. Then man deserves his status, fame and money. Let it rest.

Nevada | 02/24/08, 05:25 PM

That's like saying everyone should want Mike Mussina pitching for them because they can't do any better. That's not the point. As baseball fans it is our right, especially in the offseason, to debate the relative merits of each player. What we're saying is that Jeter is not a good fielder, but his bat makes up for it, the same way that Bonds, Manny, or Damon are paid for their bat. Meanwhile, other players like John McDonald are paid for their glove. All are great players with glaring deficiencies.
Posted Sunday February 24, 2008, About: Studies: Jeter poor defensively
Jeter is a excellent hitter, among the best in the game, andI'd tak him on my team any day.

However he is below average at defense and always has been. It's been widely acknowledged outside of New York for a long, long time. Jeter makes the average look super-human and doesn't make the above average plays.

Again, they aren't saying Jeter sucks, they're only saying his defense isn't great, which is only one aspect of the player.
Posted Monday February 18, 2008, About: Study: Jeter worst AL shortstop
Offensively there is no question that Jeter is among the best players around. I don't think that you can quantify leadership or clutch ability, and Jeter has the distinct advantage of being able to play for a team which provides him with many opportunities to succeed and look like a great player and leader. Defensively, Jeter was never close to the best. The difference is that Jeter has always made average plays look fantastic, which is how he earned 2 gold gloves, and he doesn't make difficult plays. If you use any of the more advanced fielding metrics, Jeter has always come out near the bottom.
Posted Thursday May 31, 2007, About: Angry Jays claim A-Rod interference
To everyone who is claiming Howie Clark is a fool for backing off, are you aware of how long Clark had been with the team? Howie Clark was a call-up THAT DAY. He had never played with John MacDonald in his career. He had had a mere few hours to get to know him, and get to know his voice.

Clark was focused on the ball, he only knew where John MacDonald should be. A-Rod waited until he was right between MacDonald and Clark and then yelled at Clark. Clark, being a nervous call-up, backed off to the experienced veteran, MacDonald.

Whatever A-Rod yelled, I doubt it was "hi". It was an obvious attempt to throw Clark off. The Jays were already losing. If this was so common then why would they react like this, it's not like they lost a great deal. If this was no big deal then why did the umpires have to have a conference? Matt Stairs made an excellent comment, he said to watch the comments of the other Yankees. If they stick up for him then it's no big deal. If they offer "no comment", obviously they're upset with A-Rod.
