Posted Wednesday July 03, 2013, About: Pistons target Rondo, Gay
I was fine with the Celtics holding on to the Big 3 to allow Bird and Mchale to retire in Boston (and Parish if he hadn't kept going). Coupled with the Bias and Lewis death it did set them back but not for 20 years. The team was mismanaged for the majority of the 90's (ML Carr, Rick Pitino, picks Michael Smith, Acie Earl, Eric Montross?). They drafted some decent players here and there but never put it all together.
Posted Tuesday November 20, 2012, About: Dana White on GSP vs. Silva: 'They will fight'
GSP has said before he's leery of the weight difference. He thinks Silva matches up better with Jones and I'm inclined to agree. And he didn't take a 19 month vacation, he's been working nonstop for 19 months. I can understand him wanting a break. A normal fighter only has a 2 month camp. Rehab is more more physically and mentally demanding.
Posted Sunday July 01, 2012, About: Fedor announces retirement
Fedor never ducked anyone. He misplaced his complete trust in his management M-1 Global. They stuck to their guns for the benefit of themselves: insisting on co-promotion with the UFC on any Fedor contract. When they couldn't get that for themselves, damned if they were going to let Fedor sign whether it was in his best interest or not.
Posted Monday June 11, 2012, About: Celtics in tear-down mode?
The season length also needs to be considered. What impact will going back to a regular season have next year? Will a 82 game schedule help or hurt the C's vets next year? You could make a case that it's a longer grind and will but the shorter season was more compact with more games in a row. I'm not sure what impact it'll have.

I think he deserves the $300 mil solely for being a Timberwolf for all those years... Call it pain and suffering.
Posted Tuesday December 06, 2011, About: Cubs' trade block getting heavy
I don't think it's any delusion on the part of the Red Sox, it's business 101. Ask high at first and go from there. I think they err'ed on the part of letting Theo go before agreeing on terms. Of course Theo is going to lowball back, he doesn't want to hurt his new club.

As far as what value should be assigned, I personally don't assess much value for someone with just 1 year remaining. If he had 5 years left on a contract, I could see more return.
Posted Wednesday November 30, 2011, About: Why Valentine's the anti-Tito
Going with the "Anti Tito" will either be a successful kick in the ass or create a mutiny. If it's the latter, only a roster overhaul would possibly work.
Posted Friday November 18, 2011, About: Collins keeping Thanksgiving open for NBA
I think going to Maui would be a safe bet at this point. Even if an agreement were somehow made today, I can't imagine any activity being allowed to commence within 7 days. Plus even operations were allowed to start on Monday, I'm pretty sure he can afford to cancel the ticket.
Posted Thursday October 13, 2011, About: Drama has Ortiz considering Yankees
I think he's just trying to drive up the market. Of all the teams, the Yankees don't have a spot for him. They've got Posada with Arod next in line.

the hunting and training must be good. if he gets so much as a sniffle, i'm sure he's back over the border.
now if he can ever recover from that other disease: NotBeingAbletoTakeaPunchitis

Menino's statement must have been in written form otherwise no one could possibly understand old "Mumbles".
Posted Sunday September 04, 2011, About: Johnson to play alongside son at age 50
wow, i thought HoJo hung it up a LONG time ago. he either has a devotion to the game or he needs cash in a bad way and can't do anything else. I used to like him, he was a 30/30 guy and almost went 40/40 (36/40) if i recall right.

i ran across a HOJO restaurant here in upstate NY and was shocked. There may still be one in the suburban Boston area too.

Brady's working on his doctorate and Eli's still in junior high.
Posted Thursday August 18, 2011, About: Shaq: Obama to blame for Rondo shooting woes
If I were Rondo I would have reponded with "I'll get right on that, as soon as someone teaches you how to be President. One and done."
Posted Sunday July 03, 2011, About: Colts' Mathis to sit out after lockout?
If it's so unfair a contract, don't sign it in the first place. If you sign it, live out the terms, simple as that. The terms were good when all the money was coming up front but not now? The value of the contract hasn't changed since it was signed and he knew this going in.
Posted Thursday June 16, 2011, About: Does Tyson deserve Hall of Fame?
I'm kind of on the fence. He had a good 4-5 year run which could be considered HOF worthy, IMO. But is that enough? It's almost like the arguments for/against Jim Rice being in the Baseball HOF. Not really a great fit because his prime run was about 2x as Tysons but the questions still fits: Is a dominate run over several years enough when the overall career numbers.success may be lower than HOF peers? The same case can be made for athletes who hit numbers and milestones just because they hung around long enough and kind of artificially inflated their pedigree.

I personally think had he not been in a sense betrayed by the people managing and around him, there'd be no question he should be in the hall. Definitely a candidate for the Cautionary Tale or Wasted Potential HOF's.

Trying to think of some other athletes who could fall into this discussion. Maybe a Pedro Martinez or Bo Jackson?

I bet Oden can play 82 games...it'll just be an accumulated total over 15 years.
Posted Saturday May 28, 2011, About: Posey's agent wants rule change
If they change the contact rule, I propose another change: trophies and ice cream for everyone!!!!
Posted Tuesday May 17, 2011, About: Posada wanted out, rift resurfaces
I'm sure teams are lining up for an old DH who can't even hit, even at the bargain price of $13 million per year. It shouldn't be surprising, anytime you compensate for past contributions, the stats don't equal the price (see Jeter). The only exception I can think of is Michael Jordan. The only reason was that he was still in his prime when the Bulls gave him the $30 million/yr 1 yr deals after years of paying him only $4 million.

After he apologized he got quite the ovation Sunday by fans. Wonder how if fan reaction changes now that it's come to light that he wanted out of NY.
Posted Tuesday May 17, 2011, About: Doc couldn't coach Lakers
I'm not sure the rationale behind Doc signing for 5 years. I'd go 2-3 tops. KG, Pierce & Allen (I refuse to call them or Miami "The Big 3") may have 1-2 more realistic title runs left (provided they make healthy additions to the roster). The team will be a 1st or 2nd round playoff team until they retire. The question is are they able to make the right additions to remain a legit contender the next few years? Or do they finish in the middle of the pack yearly (playoffs with no real shot but no lottery picks). He has a small chance to go out winning. More than likely at the end of 5 years the team will be in the process of rebuilding or at the point they need to start.
Posted Tuesday May 17, 2011, About: Fight suddenly over for players?
They can eventually get replacement players which would pay some of the bills if they choose to remain tough.

I agree the owners have a right to run their business how they choose fit but I disagree with the NFL needing to 'blow up' the system. The other sports need a new system before the NFL does. They don't have to worry about soft caps, guaranteed contracts or no cap at all (MLB),
