And I realize that these players have private lives that they wouldn't like disrupted -- but if they wanted that, they should have become, say, accountants. Being traded is part of the game. You have to do what best helps your team, and if the only way to do that is to be traded, well, so be it.

I think no-trade clauses are vastly overused. GMs are silly to be handing them out left right and centre, because it only binds them later on. I know Redden is an elite defencemen (a top-2 defencemen, at least -- though not as good as he used to be), but GMs should only give no-trade clauses to the best of the best, "cornerstone"-type guys (Iginla, Zetterberg, Crosby, Ovechkin, etc,) or at the very least assign a much higher value to them when making the contract e.g. say a no-trade clause would be worth 500k less a year on the contact. I think GMs are greatly undervaluing just what a no-trade cause could conceivably cost them down the road -- even the Cup, possibly.
