Actually, smelt is a word. It happens to be a fish, though, not the past tense of the verb smell.

The thing that concerns me with Michigan and their recruiting lately is that they seem to be losing kids - a lot of kids - because of perceived fracturing & dissent within the program. That's an issue that Rich Rodriguez is going to have to address and fast. Frozen Buckeye | 06/24/08, 01:36 PM

What are you talking about? What trash are you reading? And why do you believe it?
Posted Friday June 06, 2008, About: WVU kicks safety off team
The comments re: Rodriguez's association with bad kids are ridiculous. All the people making them point to Pacman Jones and Chris Henry as examples. I have no idea if there were any warning signs when they were in high school, prior to signing their LOA; but even if there were, do you think that upwards of 90% of D-1 coaches wouldn't have taken a chance on them? Of course they would. If you don't believe that, you're either naive, dim, uninformed, or just have it in for Rodriguez.

Michigan could suck and still kick ND's butt.

Yeah, sorry for the shot, though I meant to take a shot at myself in the same sentence.

And either my language was unclear or you need a course in reading comprehension. I said that more than 6 or 7 wins wouldn't shock me. I also said that I don't expect more than 6 or 7 wins. I was more or less agreeing with you except that I believe they do have a chance to win more than 7.

You're logic re: an 8 win team with less experience/talent equals fewer than 8 wins doesn't necessarily hold in the world of college football. While likely true, if you are a football fan, you know that teams win games they aren't expected to. Teams have seasons much better/worse than expected. It happens every year.

Where've you been schneider? Jake Long was a left tackle on the offensive line.
Posted Tuesday May 20, 2008, About: Michigan's top QB candidate is...
Michigan's offense is frighteningly inexperienced, but not so their defense. They have four returning starters on the D-line and experienced backups. They return both their starting corners. And two linebackers who started at various times last season. Safety is one position where they don't have a lot of experience outside of Brandon Harrison who has been the "starting" nickel back for 3 years.

I do agree that there will be struggles for the 2008 Michigan team. I won't be shocked if they win more than 6 or 7, but I don't really expect it either.

't'is true, Shafer's base front will be the 4-3. You should expect some 3-3 fronts as well, not to mention 4-2 fronts. But pretty much every program in the country runs multiple fronts. Michigan defenses under Lloyd ran plenty of 3-3 fronts, particularly the last 5-6 years.

goirish67 and PSB, did you actually hear what Weis said? This comment was absolutely not taken out of context.

I'm sure you can find it many places on the internet, but here's one...

What the h..., Sac? There are 85 scholarships to give. Don't you think it's a good idea to give a scholarship for every position on the football field? Besides that, you're grossly underestimating the importance of a good free safety.

In name, App St over Michigan may very well have been the biggest upset of all time. But I'll guarantee you there have been better teams beaten by worse teams. I was in Michigan Stadium that day, and I can tell you that App. St. had a terrific offensive football team. While they had a few athletes on defense, Michigan should have put at least a 50 on the board that day. But sloppy play and Mike Hart hurting his ankle (sorry to sound like I'm making excuses with that one, but App. St. couldn't control him before he got hurt, and still had trouble after he got hurt) doomed Michigan. And if Henne/Carr had called a timeout when Michigan had the lead and needed one more first down to run out the clock, instead of taking a delay of game penalty and subsequently coming up 4th and 1...

Dutchman, last year was Shafer's first at Stanford. You can't take much from any coach's initial season somewhere. Look to Western Michigan, where he took a defense ranked #110 to #11 from his first to second years.
Posted Friday April 25, 2008, About: Report: Carr helped Boren transfer
chapmaja, you don't know what you're talking about. The Michigan Spring Game has never been at Pioneer High School. When cement and bleachers were being replaced a Michigan Stadium a few years ago, most of the stadium was still safely accessible and the game was held in Michigan Stadium. I was there.

Entering Michigan Stadium at this time is not safe unless you're one of the construction workers.

Careful 23, while there certainly are times when people take advantage of the "race card", to believe it is automatically the case is dangerous, naive, racist itself, or some combination thereof.

Funny Ohio-jr (isn't that redundant?), but what have you got to back it up? Rodriguez has a terrific track record of success.

Do any of you people actually read the articles, or just the blurb published by FanNation? wvu1980, it appears you just read the FanNation headline. You all ought to know that FanNation's headlines are crap created to stir the proverbial pot. They rarely elicit the jist of an article.

The Free Press' article does not explicitely call into question the ability of the QBs on the roster. It's an article on two 2009 QB recruiting targets and the possibility that if they attend Michigan, they might very well unseat whoever is the 2008 starting QB.

I was at the Michigan spring game on Saturday. While neither Threet nor Sheridan were particularly impressive, I do believe either one can run RR's offense with some success. If the spring game performances are any indication, there will be consistency issues. They both made some fine throws, they also both made some poor decisions and a couple of horrible throws.

It rather irks me that most of you posters sound off about Rodriguez, Carr, Michigan, (or whatever the article is; Michigan related or otherwise) as if you know what's going on. You don't. You have no idea what the situation at practice or in the program was under Carr or Rodriguez. I don't claim to have a full grasp of it either, but I'm certain I know more than most, probably all, of you.

While in many ways it is disappointing as a Michigan fan and alum to lose Justin Boren, we're also not gonna worry about it. He's gone. His hypocritical comments were unfortunate, both for Michigan and himself. And for those who keep thinking that Michigan fans think/say a player isn't any good if they don't come to Michigan; the distinction is much more subtle than that. It's not about good or bad, it's about wanting to be at Michigan or not. Perhaps that is arrogance, so be it. Each school has their own arrogance. I only hope that Michigan fans can show some class when displaying their arrogance.

And just for the record, Rodriguez did not run off Ryan Mallett. Mallett almost definitely decided to leave before he even talked to Rodriguez. Rodriguez tried to talk him into staying. I am personally glad to see him go. Any player who yells at his head coach on the sideline (Illinois) and gets into multiple shouting matches with his teammates on the sideline (Minnesota and Wisconsin) is a problem. Mallettalmost transfered before the season even started in 2007 (he was an early enrollee). And (this is rumor) Lloyd handed him transfer papers mid-season last year because he was fed up with his crap.

Before you jump to any conclusions (and to follow up on Aroo's comments)

1. Read the story, not the NY Times blurb.

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/academics/stories/index.ssf/2008/03/athletes_ steered_to_prof.html

2. And check UM's response as Aroo suggests

http://www.vpcomm.umich.edu/pa/key/acadathlet.html

3. Know that Jim Carty, AA News lead reporter on the story, has an agenda which mostly is about making a name for himself (as Aroo suggests) and it also includes a desire to embarrass the University of Michigan (it's been present many times in his past writing).

4. Know that there are many inaccuracies and quotes used out of context (imagine that, the media using quotes out of context). And I am in a position to know this.

Holy cow Airborne72, you've made me feel worse than I have in a long time. Did I actually say something to give you the impression that I'm a bucknut? I failed to capitalize "the" in "the Ohio State University." I would have thought that would give me away as true blue. I grew up in the state of Michigan. One of my first athlete "heroes" was Rick Leach. I'm an alumnus of Michigan. I work for and expect to retire from the University.

I did say the point is arguable as to whether or not Yost is Michigan's greatest coach. I don't know your era, but I grew up with Bo. I saw Bo, just in passing, the day before he died. I feel honored to have that memory. I loved Bo. I've called him the greatest human being since Jesus (I'm an agnostic, but still thing Jesus was one hell of a human being). But when I talk about Michigan football one of the things that makes it great is it's deep and long history. Yost set the stones for the building of that history, not only by being one of the earliest inovators in college football, but also putting out some of the most dominant teams of any era in college football.
