So they have long term security as long as they aren't don't suffer a career ending injury or experience a severe performance drop off? That is another way of saying they don't have long term security, which means that it is a big deal for them to be payed up to their current level of performance. That is, of course, what I said to begin with.

The majority of NFL contracts are not guaranteed, so they don't provide any long term security, forcing the players to angle for proper compensation immediately. This is why there are so many more high profile contract disputes in the NFL than in other leagues.

Those NFL players still employed are apparently are worth the money they are paid, at least in the eyes of their employer, because they haven't been let go despite non-guaranteed contracts.

Structuring salaries like those in "real jobs" would break the competitive balance of the league, much like we've seen happen recently with the NBA, by allowing one or two teams to sign all of the top players at salaries well under market value. Attempting to institute such a system would not go over with the players, as you suggest; history tells us that it would likely result in successful antitrust action.
