It's not a situation where we can just extend a lease, the Wilfs have to be willing to sign on, and that will probably require at least the promise of a new stadium, and effort that is over 10 yrs in the process, and has zero traction.
There is also "the letter". When the Metrodome was built, it was done so w/ the threat of the Vikings moving (kinda like now), so as a kicker, the NFL guaranteed the franchise could not be moved until the original 30 yr lease was up after the 2011 season. This lease has been perceived by the 3 owners since the mid 90s as a millstone around the neck of the franchise, and each has hoped we'd build them a new stadium.
Of course, if the public is gonna put in the funds, we want the benefits of yr round use, but a dome or retractrable dome especially, is costlier. But the promise of a Super Bowl and Final Fours would help offset. So we can't even decide what kind of stadium to get. The Wilfs want an outdoor stadium, but Dec and Jan football outside in MN is a lot rougher than CHI, GB, BUF, NY, NE, CLE. They all sit near the ocean or the Great Lakes, which moderates the temperature. It can be tough to entice people outside w/ a -30 wind chill.
Look, baseball people have been predicting that Mauer would hit for power soon, ever since he came up, some would said say it is overdue. Also, the Twins preach situational hitting, asking guys to hit the other way to advance runners etc, so both M & M guys have been big doubles hitters, because they haven't been swinging for the fences as much. Look at Ortiz, that was his biggest complaint w/ the Twins, if you didn't adhere to their situatiional hitting philosophy, you often got benched, and he felt he was held back while in MN (among his own problems)
The fact that they have a passel of young hitters entering their prime power yrs, Morneau, Kubel, Cuddyer and Mauer, plus adding a power hitter like Crede, the whole team is seeing a power surge. Plus, Joe is a big guy, 6'5", so I don't believe anything about steroids w/ Joe.
He's probably a few yrs away from taking anyone to the SB, and maybe they need a SB caliber QB w/ their veteran team, but I'd never sell my soul for the washed up Farve.
Besides, Brett hasn't won a SB in over 12 yrs. That's ancient history, people think he's so great, he's been to 1 NFC title game in 10 yrs. That's very average.
I'd rather have a clue and be realistic, than to have blind faith in anything. Packer fans are CHILDREN, always thinking their team is the best, even when reality is slapping them in the face like their boyfriend's 4 inch **** (You could always claim its merely shrinkage instead of your lack of manhood)
You gotta like Tjack's arm, and he was probably always gonna be just a system QB at best, but he showed me enough down the stretch last yr that I want to see him get a fair shot. Of course w/ Chilly and Bev calling plays, I don't think it really matters who have playing QB.
Here's hoping Chilly gets fired and they get a real coach like Cowher or Shanahan.
Pit still runs the 3-4, Tomlin has taken over the team, but he doesn't dictate the defense to LeBeau. If they run the Tampa 2 in PIT, I would say that they do that when they have a lead, which just supports my contention it is a prevent D.
the Vikings last #1 defense under Dungy was good cuz it got after the passer, created turnovers and got off the field. It's a successful defense, and maybe just maybe IS WHY TEAMS CONTINUE TO RUN A PREVENT DEFENSE LATE IN GAMES despite the snide comments that all it does is prevent you from winning. People remember the times you comeback against a prevent D, but how many times does it actually keep the lead? It's less sexy to point out when its successful, just like the SI curse, everyone remembers the failures, not the success after a cover appearance.
But just because it was successful, doesn't mean that wasn't a bend but don't break D. You force the offense to have to execute repeatedly by keeping the offense in front of you, making them complete passes, and converting 3rd downs. Even great offenses can barely complete 50% of their third downs. Last yr IND lead the league w/ a 50% conv percentage. Forcing them to execute a long drive is in the D's favor, which is exactly what the Tampa 2 is predicated on, as opposed to the blitzing scheme of Jim Johnson.
You've seen this play a lot in the NFL, haven't you? In what way do you think this would work vs a pressing CB?
In fact, it most often doesn't not use bump and run coverage, it uses the linebackers to get in the passing lanes to take away the slant, and the MLB to cover the deep in routes. These players are not redirecting receivers, but taking away the passing lanes so that the QB has to hold the ball long enough for the rush to get to him.
Pts come out of the passing game. And the quote that smileyman was quoting me from was in regards to defense anyway, and defending the pass, which everyone knows has become the most important thing to do in general. The 07 Giants were proof of that
When I said this was a pass first league, I'm speaking about now, and yes, JAWS WOULD EVEN ADMIT THAT MOST TEAMS PASS FIRST, and has argued many times, that a team should.
After all, "POINTS COME OUT OF THE PASSING GAME." I believe is a direct quote and ethos of Jaws. IT IS A PASS FIRST LEAGUE. Look at what the Patriots do, they are a pass first team, the Eagles, the Cards, Denver
That's a form of prevent defense. It's predicated on keeping the receivers in front of the defense, tackling them to limit ydg after the catch and making a team convert a lot of 3rd downs, where eventually your defense can force a punt or a turnover.
Teams that run the 3-4 will also play prevent defense when they have a big lead.
