I certainly cant wait for wednesday
Can Ronaldo turn it on in his homeland?
Do we have to call upon Macheda again?
If Beckham brought in new fans, it has already happen, i dont think he will bring in many new ones either. But the buzz he does bring will at least sell out many stadiums wherever he goes and has brought some more fans to MLS matches, i dont think you can expect much more. They key is to bring in other stars or new stadiums to build on that exposure so his impact wont wilt and we can build upon it. If Ronaldinho came this January and signed for the Red Bulls, every week there will be two sold out stadiums in MLS. The Fire sign Del Piero, even more exposure, headlines on World News, the interest wont wilt, people will come to watch and find out what all the buzz is about and hopefully you'll be able to keep them coming back at least a few times in all stadiums, even if it is only $5 tickets.
The key is to get interest from stars coming to your teams stadium and keep at least some of the interest in "normal matches" after they come where the arent stars. Plus you always have some sell outs to watch these guys every week. Nationality will help people get out, the key is reigning them in.
Lol, at least the stadium will look more than half full
The Red Bulls stand at 16,000 a game right now. Del Piero comes, it can at LEAST go up 5,000, making it the second most watched team behind the Galaxy and Ahead of the Toronto. Beckham comes to New York, Becks vs Del Piero, Giants stadium can have a MASSIVE amount of people, Italian nationals mocking Becks and the 14 year old girls looking for his autograph.
Do any of the stars really come for international respect? Becks came to LA for the stars and the paradise weather. New York is a rocking city, the biggest metropolis in the world, people love to come there. No one in Europe really has any respect for MLS teams, players come to popularize the product and experience the great America and the big cities all around. And they get massive $$$. Thats why Alessandro may come.
There are very few teams like the Revs, or DC United who continue to get great support without big names. But teams like Colorado or KC need those names beacuse the interest just isnt there, and there management sucks
The problem with Chivas is that they don't have any big name Mexican players at all. In fact they have 1 mexican. If Chivas were able to land a Jared Borgetti, Rafael Marquez, or even Oswaldo Sanchez, the national team heroes, the Mexican decent folks will have something to look forward to instead of a bunch of american players plasying under the Chivas name. Look how many Mexican folks turn out for the Mexico vs US matches in the south and on the west coast. Bring some of those Mexican stars to Chivas, attendance will skyrocket.
Beckham's novelty aspect is gone, but he stills sells out nearly every game he goes to. LA Galaxys road attendance is even higher tyhan last season, Becks first season. Now wouldn't you love to see a mouthwatering Del Piero vs Becks clash in NY? We could get tens of thousands in Giants stadium for that. These kind of matches will certainly bring an electric atmosphere and a great product and good value, but we need something to kick start that, like stars from abroad, before we can self-sustain our league with our own stars.
But you are right, the curious on looker needs to stay, but the product needs to upgrade, and stars from other places can do that and improve the quality of play and the exposure and the atmosphere at the moment and improve those already here. And this needs to be all over so the KC Wizards wont continue to have only 10,000 a game, they need to bring some talent or relocate.
Its been a while since we've had this caliber of a defender come to MLS, lets just hope he doesnt turn out like Denilson. I'm not expecting him to be John Terry, but he should improve the quality of play here and teach the youngsters a few things. We need more former top players like this in all positions, not just attacking ones.
As far as the quality of play goes, I would love to have one stacked team, which wont happen because of salary cap and DP's. but do you want teams like the colorado rapids to have a nearly non existent franchise that cant compete with the best teams and will have losing season after losing season? In order for the league to be more enjoyable to see, it needs to be more competitive because unlike the EPL, where we can stand to watch Chelsea demolish west Brom because we love watching guys like Lampard and Ballack and Anelka run around, we certainly dont have that sort of pulling power for big names, yet. I think we want to be like the French League before we become the EPL. Stars must spread out to make sure the league is competitive and enjoyable to watch. Eventually, as more stars come and develop our own players here all around the country, the league will grow and may even compete for a Copa Libertadores title like the Mexicans teams have.
We really cant have a quick fix, we need to build off what Becks has brought through exposure and try to bring the rest of the league to that kind of level. At least thats what i think
You also have to take into account that Beckham may have influenced his Milan teammates such as Ronaldinho, Kaka, Zambrotta, Nesta, Inzaghi, Emerson, Gattuso, Seedorf, Pirlo, Ambrosini, and Shevchenko to have a go at playing in the US.
At least Huntealaar scored 21 and 34 goals for Ajax in consecutive seasons. The eridevese is weak, thats why he is yet to be "proven" at the highest level, but he has been dynamite for Hoilland scoring 10 times in 18 matches. He may be more proven than the other two.
Robinho on the other hand was good for Real last year from the wing instead of as a forward, has been great this year, and does well for the national team. He is proven.
And seriously, Pato, Higuain, Huntelaar over Robinho? They still have yet to prove themselves.
Anyway, he aint going anywhere, just a minor infraction thats gonna be cleared up. of course the press exaggerates everything.
He does need another superstar to play (like Kaka) with at least if City are to crack the top 4
United will get even more sponshorship money (I heard another 5 mil a year possibly), which will be great for debt and kitty
I don't think so, but he certainly needs to impress to get the chance. I'm rooting for him, but realistically, he would have to do some great to break in the first XI, he's more like a reserve/ occasional sub at this point
