Exactly, last year they would have gone back a few yards then missed the FG. This year, they took advantage of the mistakes against a solid UM D. That's probably the best D they'll face until USC. Add the emergence of Golden Tate and the O-line and this season has a lot of promise.
My concern is with MSU. They've been a problem for ND for a while. I think it's that they come after ND plays UM, so you have this huge emotional rush from playing your rival, and then it's hard to keep that going till next week.
That was the best front seven ND will face until SC. They just passed a HUGE early test. Just re-watched the game this morning. They made the majority of their 2nd or 3rd and 1 attempts, something they couldn't do last year. They also played with serious emotion, another thing lacking from last year. All while hosting some of the top recruits in the country. Good stuff.
There are holes, no doubt, but as Weis said, the needle's pointing up.

Weis was just riffing on an old classic in a room full of boosters. Coaches talk trash all the time in those things.

As an aside, that kid's mother deserves a medal. Must have been like popping a bowling ball through a garden hose.
I wonder too and you're right, this is the year to find out. The schedule is much more favourable. Even the tough ones figure to be easier due to graduations (ie Mich and BC are both losing a lot of talent this year). Charlie has admitted mistakes like not going hard in fall camp (although that was due to being paper thin at certain positions), so I'm optimistic. Charlie has shown that he can admit mistakes and is looking to correct them, which is admirable in any coach, especially for one who is derided as "arrogant". I look at it this way: the team is still young, but we realistically have a shot at 7-5. Looking at the ND boards, that is what is necessary to keep CW on board. It shows both growth within the program and player development. If he falls short, he's gone, and the new coach comes in with a fully stocked cupboard. So I have a lot of optimism for the coming years.
He visited LSU, decided against it for whatever reason. IIRC, LSU is stacked at D-Line, so maybe he figured that he'd be playing sooner at ND.
