All the best to Jim and a quick recovery....I think McDermott will do a good job with this defense....plus it allows the defense to put a new wrinkle in JJ's system to throw the opposing teams off by new formations...
Posted Thursday July 23, 2009, About: More Jays available in Halladay deal?
So the Jays are asking for the Phillies 5 top prosects for Halladay, Scutaro, Frasor, and Tallet? STILL not worth the top 5 prospects in our system....

J.P. Ricciardi should count himself lucky for the 4 the Phillies have rumored to have offered....I don't think a team will do what Milwaukee did last season by trading their top prospects for a couple months worth of baseball....Halladay is signed through this season and has the player option for 2010....that's an awfully big gamble to take on a guy who may or may not want to resign in Philly.

The only problem that I could see with NHL teams sending highly paid players down to the minors for any extended period of the, trying to strong arm a trade, would be that no free agents would go to that team if that's the business they practice....It's the team's fault for the ridiculous contracts they put out there....The player's are just benefitting from a system that is so out of whack....

The next CBA should be structured alot like the NFL...except that players would only be allowed to be cut after a certain age....not at any point to create cap room...Make the team's accountable for their "mistakes"....I know it sounds pretty cruel to cut guys because of age, but after a certain age the player's start to decline very noticeably....
Posted Monday June 29, 2009, About: 76ers deny Heat trade rumor
The Sixers have had bad cap management going back to the days before there was a cap....They need a capologist to straighten them out....These GM's don't understand that, just because you have cap space - YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE IT....And just because a player is up for a new contract - YOU DON'T HAVE TO GIVE THEM MAX or NEAR MAX money....(see Dalembert and Iguodala contracts)....

Until that happens we'll be stuck with players like the Kareen Rush's, Royale Ivey's, and Louis Amundson's of the world....Every team should be 6 players deep with above average talent....The Sixers', IMO, have maybe 3....Iguodala (slightly above average talent), Thad Young (untapped potential still to come), and Elton Brand (If injuries don't slow him down - I don't count the shoulder injury because that was a freak accident on the court)....All the other players are average at best.....I don't count Andre Miller because he's not really on this roster unless he's re-signed....
Posted Monday June 29, 2009, About: 76ers deny Heat trade rumor
Can we count Dr. J as a trade? The Nets actually sold his contract to the Sixers? If we count that as a trade....that would be the one of the two that comes to mind as a great deal....

Moses Malone was traded to us....all we gave up was Caldwell Jones and a 1st Round draft pick in 1983.....I think that worked out pretty darn well for the team....
Posted Monday June 29, 2009, About: 76ers deny Heat trade rumor
DaQuean Cook....didn't the Sixers' originally draft that guy?

Elton Brand had some bad luck in his first season with the Sixers....Do they dump him after one season? I don't think they will....It sends a bad message to other "possible" free agents when thinking about signing here....If they don't perform in the first season they'll be sent packing to play somewhere else....

Dalembert is the player the Sixers' have to desperately get rid of.....I'd get rid of him for anything....just get him off our roster....
Posted Saturday June 27, 2009, About: Niedermayer spurred Pronger trade
I cannot get on board with this deal for the Flyers....This deal REAKS of desperation for the team....Why do you deal THREE first round draft picks (Sbisa, this year's and next) for a guy who may or may not be here after this year....The cost was WAY too much for a guy his age....Pronger is a good defenseman....I won't deny that....but he's past his prime....If Holmgren thinks he's going to re-sign this guy after this season, he's crazy....

I swear when I heard this deal I felt like Bob Clarke snuck into the draft and pulled one of his "rent-a-player" deals....This deal reminds me of the Adam Oates trade....It sucks for us and make Anaheim look like a bunch of geniuses....

Way too much given up....The future of the Flyers takes a backseat for a few years....it's either win now or nothing...

If the Flyers aren't in contention for a playoff birth come the deadline....Pronger will probably be moved....AGAIN....

All it took to get Bouwmeester was Jordan Leopold and a 3rd rounder? Holmgren couldn't come up with that?????
Posted Thursday June 18, 2009, About: Why Canadiens don't want Briere
I'm a huge Flyers fan....This season I have to give the credit to Pittsburgh GM for making the right moves to sure up his team. Getting Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz near the trading deadline were great moves....I was hoping that Holmgren would've made the same kind of bold move that Shero did....
The Flyers have a great lineup....they're deep offensively....problem is that Holmgren has taken the Flyers from being one of the biggest lineups in the NHL to possibly one of the smallest....When Mike Knuble is your only legitimate "power" forward, you in a little bit of trouble...
The Flyers do not have that "GO TO" player like Pittsburgh does in Malkin and Crosby....Plus our defense is more then "suspect....Timonen is fine....Coburn needs to be more aggressive....Jones HAS GOT TO GO....Alberts HAS GOT TO GO....Parent, I think will be a very good defenseman....Carle, he's overrated and overpaid....I always believed that the Flyers needed a puck moving defenseman paired with a porch clearing defenseman....Give me Beauchemin and Komisarek to pair with Timonen, Coburn, and Parent....
I would like Holmgren to challenge the coaching staff more also....I just don't think John Stevens does enough to get his team ready game in and game out....There's no real defensive scheme that the Flyers play....One Bylsma took over Pittsburgh it seemed that they developed with a more defensive scheme to their play....
If you can't play defense you can't keep the puck outta the net....Your goalie (no matter who it is) can steal you 82 games plus 16 in the playoffs...
Posted Tuesday June 09, 2009, About: Flyers still talking to Emery
Even without any moves, the Flyers are over $53 million in cap money (that's counting Backlund @ $800K and Emery @ $2.5 million). The cap is rumored to be in the neighborhood of $54 million this upcoming season....Still doesn't allow them enough room to go out and move just one player to bring in a JBo or Komisarek....

If Holmgren could move Lupul, Jones, and Carle in separate deals and not take as much back in salary, he could open up $ 10 million to spend on players like Komisarek and JBo....but like I said, in the NHL no one is a guaranteed tradeable piece. It's all wishful thinking on my part.

In an ideal world Montreal would be banging down our door asking to trade for Daniel Briere, but that won't happen....

Today's NHL is what it is....
Posted Tuesday June 09, 2009, About: Flyers still talking to Emery
Most people have this T.O.-type of repeat that will happen if Emery comes to the Flyers. Emery is high risk/high reward. Remember the swagger that T.O. brought the Eagles that first season he was here? That's something the Flyers SORELY lack, it was especially evident in the second half of the season and playoffs where they played with little to no emotion....

The Flyers need to concentrate on defense this offseason....Maybe there will be a taker for Randy Jones (who became VERY gun shy after that Bergeron incident), Alberts is pretty much gone (a waste of a million dollars), Carle could go, hasn't lived up to his potential since his rookie season....Timonen, Coburn, and Parent are the only defensemen I would keep around....They need puck movers and porch clearing defenseman....They need to start thinking one big Dman and one puck mover on each line....

As far as offense....Briere or Gagne won't be going anywhere with those No-Trade clauses in their back pockets....Lupul probably won't go anywhere because he's now making too much money to be inconsistent....

Holmgren will have to make a pretty intelligent move to get someone like Bouwmeester or Komisarek on this team....There's just too much money tied up in Briere and Timonen (almost $13 million) to make that big a splash this offseason....
Posted Thursday June 04, 2009, About: Sources: Flyers to sign Emery
The Flyers are stuck in salary cap hell....Giguere costs too much....They'll never get Luongo or Price....and even if they were to trade for any of them it would most certainly cost you the "depth" in scoring....Biron is going to want a raise from the $3.5 million he made last year....

Next season is going to be a questionable...

What else can Holmgren do to create cap space? Briere and Gagne can't be traded unless they waive their no-trade clause....He could try to trade Randy Jones, but he's coming off hip surgery....Then there's the subject of Knuble....do you or don't you bring him back?
Posted Monday May 18, 2009, About: Flyer-Canadiens deal in works?
Briere is a candidate....now if there was someone crazy enough to take his salary on....that's a different story....Timonen and Briere's contract handcuff this team for the next couple of years....but that was Holmgren trying to make an impact for this team....now those contracts are having an impact (negatively) on the way he has to create this team year after year....
Posted Monday May 18, 2009, About: Flyer-Canadiens deal in works?
Holmgren seems to have a way to swing deals for players that are UFA's and get a deal done before they hit the market....He has to improve this team's defense and goaltending situations....At the same time creating enough cap space....Briere is the likely candidate....$7 million is a large chunk of change to open up....

The Flyer's minor league system is very young and they don't have the players to bring up and throw into the NHL right now...
Posted Monday May 18, 2009, About: Luongo to Flyers?
JVR hasn't even played in the NHL yet....how do you know he's soft? He JUST turned 20....

Plus I didn't name 2 lines....I named FOUR forwards and THREE Defensman (one of which has a contract that would be hard for a team to wanna take on)....Briere, Lupul, Hartnell, Gagne, Carle - all have some value in a trade....it wouldn't be enough to get an elite goalie....They wouldn't even need an elite goalie if they had a defensive scheme in place...

I never thought the Flyers could trade for Luongo and believe they can't/won't....You don't trade your future for right now (Giroux/JVR/Parent)....The Rangers may do that...but the Flyers' shouldn't....
Posted Monday May 18, 2009, About: Luongo to Flyers?
I could see Philly making a run at Giguere before they would even attempt a run at Luongo....
Posted Monday May 18, 2009, About: Luongo to Flyers?
I don't think Vancouver will trade Luongo....that's why I don't believe this would even be a rumor...
Posted Monday May 18, 2009, About: Flyer-Canadiens deal in works?
The Canadiens are going to lose Komisarik in the offseason anyway....They might as well get something of some sorta value for him in return....
Posted Monday May 18, 2009, About: Luongo to Flyers?
There is no way Holmgren is stupid enough to let go of both Carter AND Giroux in the same deal....let alone seperate ones....Those two would be on the short list of untouchables....

Richards, Parent, Coburn, Giroux, Carter, Sbisa, Van Riemsdyk, and Timonen....are about all I have on the "untouchables" list.....

Everyone else is expendable for the right deal....

The Flyers have to get a goalie....It's imperative...
Posted Monday May 18, 2009, About: Flyer-Canadiens deal in works?
The Flyers main problem over the years has been they've never had that young goalie to hang their future on. Price could fit that bill....He is only 21....Marc Andre Fleury sucked in his first couple years in Pittsburgh, but they now developed a defensive system and more game then not he looks like a very good goalie...

Biron is pretty much done here....The Flyers have to find defenseman steady enough to put in front of a goalie....Alberts, Jones, and sometimes Carle aren't the guys to stick out there....They need, in my opinion, one puck mover and one porch clearing guy in front of the net....

I'd do a deal like this as long as Van Riemsdyk and Sbisa were not included in the deal....

I have a gut feeling that if Montreal acquires Briere, Kovalev is done there....
Posted Tuesday May 12, 2009, About: Vincent gives Brown contract advice
Jason Peters didn't get a new contract....They gave him an extension on his existing one....It's basically a 4 year deal worth $53 million dollars, but for the next two years he'll be playing out his prior contract....

How often do teams rip up a contract to present the player with a new one? Never....unless a player is offering to re-work his deal for the good of the team....and even in that case the re-worked deal is nothing more then money spread out over more years....
Posted Tuesday May 05, 2009, About: Flyers interested in Ray Emery
I would definitely get rid of Jones ($2.25 million - hasn't been the same since the Bergeron hit)....I'd possibly dump Gagne ($5.25 million - the guy played very half-hearted the last few weeks of the season, glided around the ice too much)...and get rid of Briere ($7.5 million - he's too small to make a difference anymore)....I'd get rid of Alberts too ($1 million is alot to pay a guy who turns the puck over a ton)....

Next season the Flyers have to concentrate on what this team needs.....Emery is a very good goalie, when he's not distracted by outside influences....They need a centerman who can win cluctch faceoffs....and they need one or two porch clearing defenseman....

If they Flyers could just play the way the Anaheim Ducks do...hitting everything that's in sight....and wearing down other teams....they'd still be in the playoffs....just a few tweaks is all this team needs....
