J.P. Ricciardi should count himself lucky for the 4 the Phillies have rumored to have offered....I don't think a team will do what Milwaukee did last season by trading their top prospects for a couple months worth of baseball....Halladay is signed through this season and has the player option for 2010....that's an awfully big gamble to take on a guy who may or may not want to resign in Philly.
The next CBA should be structured alot like the NFL...except that players would only be allowed to be cut after a certain age....not at any point to create cap room...Make the team's accountable for their "mistakes"....I know it sounds pretty cruel to cut guys because of age, but after a certain age the player's start to decline very noticeably....
Until that happens we'll be stuck with players like the Kareen Rush's, Royale Ivey's, and Louis Amundson's of the world....Every team should be 6 players deep with above average talent....The Sixers', IMO, have maybe 3....Iguodala (slightly above average talent), Thad Young (untapped potential still to come), and Elton Brand (If injuries don't slow him down - I don't count the shoulder injury because that was a freak accident on the court)....All the other players are average at best.....I don't count Andre Miller because he's not really on this roster unless he's re-signed....
Moses Malone was traded to us....all we gave up was Caldwell Jones and a 1st Round draft pick in 1983.....I think that worked out pretty darn well for the team....
Elton Brand had some bad luck in his first season with the Sixers....Do they dump him after one season? I don't think they will....It sends a bad message to other "possible" free agents when thinking about signing here....If they don't perform in the first season they'll be sent packing to play somewhere else....
Dalembert is the player the Sixers' have to desperately get rid of.....I'd get rid of him for anything....just get him off our roster....
I swear when I heard this deal I felt like Bob Clarke snuck into the draft and pulled one of his "rent-a-player" deals....This deal reminds me of the Adam Oates trade....It sucks for us and make Anaheim look like a bunch of geniuses....
Way too much given up....The future of the Flyers takes a backseat for a few years....it's either win now or nothing...
If the Flyers aren't in contention for a playoff birth come the deadline....Pronger will probably be moved....AGAIN....
All it took to get Bouwmeester was Jordan Leopold and a 3rd rounder? Holmgren couldn't come up with that?????
The Flyers have a great lineup....they're deep offensively....problem is that Holmgren has taken the Flyers from being one of the biggest lineups in the NHL to possibly one of the smallest....When Mike Knuble is your only legitimate "power" forward, you in a little bit of trouble...
The Flyers do not have that "GO TO" player like Pittsburgh does in Malkin and Crosby....Plus our defense is more then "suspect....Timonen is fine....Coburn needs to be more aggressive....Jones HAS GOT TO GO....Alberts HAS GOT TO GO....Parent, I think will be a very good defenseman....Carle, he's overrated and overpaid....I always believed that the Flyers needed a puck moving defenseman paired with a porch clearing defenseman....Give me Beauchemin and Komisarek to pair with Timonen, Coburn, and Parent....
I would like Holmgren to challenge the coaching staff more also....I just don't think John Stevens does enough to get his team ready game in and game out....There's no real defensive scheme that the Flyers play....One Bylsma took over Pittsburgh it seemed that they developed with a more defensive scheme to their play....
If you can't play defense you can't keep the puck outta the net....Your goalie (no matter who it is) can steal you 82 games plus 16 in the playoffs...
If Holmgren could move Lupul, Jones, and Carle in separate deals and not take as much back in salary, he could open up $ 10 million to spend on players like Komisarek and JBo....but like I said, in the NHL no one is a guaranteed tradeable piece. It's all wishful thinking on my part.
In an ideal world Montreal would be banging down our door asking to trade for Daniel Briere, but that won't happen....
Today's NHL is what it is....
The Flyers need to concentrate on defense this offseason....Maybe there will be a taker for Randy Jones (who became VERY gun shy after that Bergeron incident), Alberts is pretty much gone (a waste of a million dollars), Carle could go, hasn't lived up to his potential since his rookie season....Timonen, Coburn, and Parent are the only defensemen I would keep around....They need puck movers and porch clearing defenseman....They need to start thinking one big Dman and one puck mover on each line....
As far as offense....Briere or Gagne won't be going anywhere with those No-Trade clauses in their back pockets....Lupul probably won't go anywhere because he's now making too much money to be inconsistent....
Holmgren will have to make a pretty intelligent move to get someone like Bouwmeester or Komisarek on this team....There's just too much money tied up in Briere and Timonen (almost $13 million) to make that big a splash this offseason....
Next season is going to be a questionable...
What else can Holmgren do to create cap space? Briere and Gagne can't be traded unless they waive their no-trade clause....He could try to trade Randy Jones, but he's coming off hip surgery....Then there's the subject of Knuble....do you or don't you bring him back?
The Flyer's minor league system is very young and they don't have the players to bring up and throw into the NHL right now...
Plus I didn't name 2 lines....I named FOUR forwards and THREE Defensman (one of which has a contract that would be hard for a team to wanna take on)....Briere, Lupul, Hartnell, Gagne, Carle - all have some value in a trade....it wouldn't be enough to get an elite goalie....They wouldn't even need an elite goalie if they had a defensive scheme in place...
I never thought the Flyers could trade for Luongo and believe they can't/won't....You don't trade your future for right now (Giroux/JVR/Parent)....The Rangers may do that...but the Flyers' shouldn't....
Richards, Parent, Coburn, Giroux, Carter, Sbisa, Van Riemsdyk, and Timonen....are about all I have on the "untouchables" list.....
Everyone else is expendable for the right deal....
The Flyers have to get a goalie....It's imperative...
Biron is pretty much done here....The Flyers have to find defenseman steady enough to put in front of a goalie....Alberts, Jones, and sometimes Carle aren't the guys to stick out there....They need, in my opinion, one puck mover and one porch clearing guy in front of the net....
I'd do a deal like this as long as Van Riemsdyk and Sbisa were not included in the deal....
I have a gut feeling that if Montreal acquires Briere, Kovalev is done there....
How often do teams rip up a contract to present the player with a new one? Never....unless a player is offering to re-work his deal for the good of the team....and even in that case the re-worked deal is nothing more then money spread out over more years....
Next season the Flyers have to concentrate on what this team needs.....Emery is a very good goalie, when he's not distracted by outside influences....They need a centerman who can win cluctch faceoffs....and they need one or two porch clearing defenseman....
If they Flyers could just play the way the Anaheim Ducks do...hitting everything that's in sight....and wearing down other teams....they'd still be in the playoffs....just a few tweaks is all this team needs....
